  • In this video I upgrade my Onewheel pint to double the range using a DeWalt Flexvolt 9Ah Battery. Yup a Onewheel Pint powered by DeWalt!
    This is also called a vamp and ride (VNR).
    Note you can use any Ah Flexvolt or 60 volt Lithium (Li-ion) battery , the voltage needs to match but the Ah/capacity can be different. The battery chemistry should be the same as well: Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (LiNiMnCoO2) - NMC batteryunivers...

    It is important to note: contrary to Future Motions’s claims, and what a lot of DIY instructionals warn, doing these types of modifications will NOT per se void your warranty!
    Thanks to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975, Future Motion can claim whatever they want, and put void stickers wherever they want, but voiding a warranty because of consumer modifications is a violation of federal law. Unless Future Motion can prove that a claimant’s modifications directly led to the damage causing a need for the in-warranty repair, they are not legally permitted to exclude items from warranty simply because of end user modification.
    Moreover, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act puts the onus of proof on the manufacturer, not the consumer, and any ambiguous language is interpreted in favour of the consumer.

    Hey Andrew, could you take another pint battery and put it underneath and wire it in like you did the flexvolt? or maybe hack a foot pad and stick a second battery layer inside a thicker footpad? you want to collab on it?

  • @weiye701

    Doesn't sound safe to connect external battery directly to onewheel battery terminals. As it effectively bypasses over-current/over-voltage protection, it sounds a quite risk modification.

    Brother so awesome! inspires me , I'd purchase one of those adapters from you if you sold them? Also what do you think on Putting two of those batteries on there and mounting them more top center of the fender? would adding two batteries instead of just one do anything like doubling the voltage etc?

  • @Grimcoin
    @Grimcoin Před 3 lety +5

    You mentioned you need to be careful to make sure the internal vs dewalt voltage is similar when plugging it in-- so would I be right in saying this wouldn't be a 'carry in bag for emergencies' situation, and you'd always have to set off with the dewalt plugged in, so the packs deplete at roughly the same rate?

      @tylermiller9799 Před 2 lety

    • @AndrewWilde
      @AndrewWilde Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hello from 2 years later! You are correct about the use. They would deplete together, not as a top up. This is adding the Dewalt battery in parallel to the existing 15s pint battery (same voltage but higher amp hours). If you connect two packs at different voltages, you can end up having big sparks as the cells rapidly dump current to equalize the voltage between the cells. That current rush can damage cells or start a fire if the current draw is too high at any point in the system.
      If you wanted it to be charge n ride, you’d need a DC to DC voltage controller to regulate voltage and current to the pint battery for charging. I’m using a 10s2p 18650 battery to do this on the go. Getting a Quart built and am going to design my own GT40 battery for pint 😊 float on

    Wondering about just extending the OW battery cable so it comes outside compartment with a XT60 splice there. Then use that OW battery only until low, and then disconnect it and connect the DeWalt, use it until low... Then use another Dewalt. ie only one battery at any time so no constraint of balancing batteries voltages. Infinite range, right ?

      @inactive67 Před 2 lety +1

      Or two

    • @yhsyoo
      @yhsyoo Před rokem +2

      No. Both batteries should be at the same voltage so they can act like one big battery. Putting two batteries in parallel without them having same voltages will result in huge current rushing from higher charged battery to lower to make both batteries equal. So you are basically charging one battery with another battery very quickly. He did not put any fuse between two batteries so first thing to be worried about is cable catching fire because of exsessive current. Second thing is li-ion batteries should be charged using CCCV (constant current, constant voltage) method limiting current going in to prevent overheating. And the last part is, you are directly connected to pints battery bypassing BMS (battery managment system), and there is chance that cells will go out of balance or one of them overcharge and catch fire.

    Now the app/led display read wrong! Your right they read 20% when 50% of the system power remains (Onboard and outboard). Should I just keep riding? Will the board shut off on me even if the voltage is good? I was reading 56volts but the Onewheel and the app thought I was about to run out. HELP!

    • @rmedal4594
      @rmedal4594 Před 3 lety +3

      I figured out a work around: Disconnect and stop using the onewheel app. Without gps the onewheel will use actual voltage for the led power level display. If you connect the app again for moment the percentage will be correct (as it will only be based on voltage).
      I tested this % last night down to 75% remaining. I will update as I test.

      @TheAnimeist Před 3 lety

      IMHO, wearing a blue hoody, I wouldn't do this as a first time buy for a Onewheel. If range is your concern start off with an XR+. Because you void your warranty as soon as you install the VNR system. The VNR modification is better suited for someone who has a Pint that is out, or near out of warranty. Besides you don't want to be fiddling with this while you're trying to enjoy and learn how to ride.

    • @MrDmadness
      @MrDmadness Před 3 lety +2

      Kinda, when you talk voltage what you are saying g is "electrical pressure" if the voltage is not directionally protected with a diode or busadaptor then equalization will happen between 2 battery's, think of the extra battery like additional cells added to the same battery. If you tap out the stock battery and then engage the other one some voltage potential exists to the new cells. Series parallel configuration allows you to use either or or both, series has additive v parallel offer greater electron flow ( amps ) to anybody reading this this guy knows what he's doing, IF you ever want to try to mess with a battery mod I HIGHLY suggest you ride around and fully discharge the battery. 54v dc = very painful.. easy to fry a control circuit ( controll are usually 5 volt max )
