These steps are in our garage, waiting to be installed on our 2023 Bronco 4 door! Is there any reason not to mount them with the widest part at front of the vehicle, instead of rear? This may provide better protection against rocks from front tires hitting the body?

Are those installed backwards?
Nope! They are facing the correct direction.
Those are definitely installed on the wrong side. The gorhino plaque goes towards the rear
