I love listening to various high school orchestras doing this, but every once and awhile you have to come to something like this to be completely blown away
Rossini was the first great modern entertainer. He understood the ever evolving audience the way Tchaikovsky later also did. They remain the two most entertaining of the pre-20th century great masters.
This is one of the best performances of the William Tell Overture I have ever heard. I first heard this piece at about age 12 in 1958 (of course back then our only exposure to classical music was the theme song for The Lone Ranger) and was lulled to sleep during the first 11:10 min. until the finale, then all us kids knew exactly what the piece was. How exciting to hear it over and over. Thank you.
My favorite has always been the one performed by the Berlin Philharmonic in the mid 90's with Claudio Abbado. It is only the part from the 9:00 mark here on but it is awesome.
Section 1: Prelude/ Dawn 3:00-6:19 Section 2: Storm 6:20-8:39 Section 3: Ranz des vaches/Call To The Cows 8:40-11:15 Section 4: March of the Swiss Soldiers/Finale 11:16-14:16
Appello agli italiani: perlomeno in italiano chiamiamolo "violoncello".
Bravo Sandro!!
Yes - Gergiev famously conducts with his hands only, and is sometimes criticised for eschewing the baton. As a response, he took to conducting with the smallest possible baton, a tooth pick
In her defense the BBC Proms concerts are broadcast on TV to a very wide audience, much of which may not know much about classical music; therefore introductory comments might be helpful for such a wide audience.

Definitely agree. Who would you consider their counterparts post-20th Century?
OMG, the trombonists must be robots!! The storm tempo is CRAZY!! 7:07
Honestly they are. Most of us hold on for dear life tho lmao, unfortunately this excerpt is a standard

A firery horse with a speed of light. A cloud of dust, and a hearty Ho Yo Silver. The Lone Ranger rides again.
Per semplicità ... SUBLIME !!!
Bravo Sandro!!
Awesome version; quickness with melody being brought out fully; usually it seems, in my opinion, often there is a trade off between these
Excelentes y finísimas piezas clásicas, gracias.
Valerie is great hope to see him New York soon.
very beautiful!

11:15 is probably what you're looking for :)
Everyone loves the finale, but personally I find the flute/oboe (cor anglais?) duet just before even more beautiful
but the finale isn't meant to be beautiful
They play it so beautifully
BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ladies and Gentlemen the James Brown of Conducting.
11:30 the chase music.

Bravo Sandro!
Conducting with a toothpick, uber star
Who is the 1st flute? Love his tone!!
Awesome
Gergiev is holding a toothpick?? Gergiev just finished his dinner probably...
Well played, but I feel like I'm in a race.
A beautiful piece brilliantly conducted. Not that is matters, but what is Maestro Gergiev using to conduct? A toothpick?
Acme No 5 toothpicks, when only the best will do.
is the conductor using a toothpick ?!?!
Is that Higgins on the timpani?
after Toscanini

Thought she would never shut up. Great tune
11:17
The intro is very long an is the conductor holding a tooth pick ???
Yes - Gergiev famously conducts with his hands only, and is sometimes criticised for eschewing the baton. As a response, he took to conducting with the smallest possible baton, a tooth pick
Is the concert master Rainer Küchl ?
Yes he was!
Small bobble for english horn player at 10:19. Otherwise, impeccable.performance.
Why does't that woman shut up?!?
lmao
Why he is using a toothpick?
maybe he had a snack before he came onto the stage.
That's a some tempo at the end.
2:59-14:17
Always someone coughing throughout...
8:38
First piece could easily have been by Bruch.
Gergiev is not a conductor, but a lackey in power!
Could you please cut the introduction? It's very distracting! In classical music, we don't need any intro. What counts is the music.
In her defense the BBC Proms concerts are broadcast on TV to a very wide audience, much of which may not know much about classical music; therefore introductory comments might be helpful for such a wide audience.
