- DayZ: Standalone is a game I've played for a while, with Arma 3 being a more recent induction. Both are well made zombie survival experiences. But which one, in this modern gaming landscape-is better? Let's see in this video essay/documentary where we compare the two.

I think one thing vanilla DayZ really needs is mechanics/vehicles that require genuine collaboration with players. Let’s use the helicopter as an example from Arma 2 DayZ mod, everyone wanted one, it was the endgame goal to control Chernarus from the skies and provides accessibility for rescuing players. Moreover, helicopters required sufficient effort to get running, which is extremely time consuming for a solo player but less so when working with others. Sure we all love the ambiguity of players mentality, are they friendly? Should I trust them? But we all know by this point in development, the majority of players haven’t experienced the history of DayZ, so they treat it as a KOS deathmatch with no roleplay or communication with other players. DayZ SA as it stands now only rewards solo play, there’s no incentive to actually work with others or form groups because all people care about atm is how good their kit looks
I actually agree quite a bit with this. I personally think it is friendly for groups of players and collaboration, but it gets stale after a while. There's a steep curve of if you'll win or lose a gunfight, therefore your gear. It's the same with upkeeping your items and base. It's very hit or miss and it becomes very frustrating, and even if you end up rulling the server with your faction/group, you end up with nothing really to do. Which supports your excellent point that it becomes a KOS shooter, because everyone feels they have to fight for fun/retaining their gear, which is boring as hell. Idk, it's just quite shit mate lol. There was at one point a mod for arma 3 called breaking point, it was dayz but with factions the player could choose from (Can't remember them all) but certain factions where friendly and others enemies. So you had a dynamic of a complete stranger being your "ally" (each faction had uniforms to identify them), your goal was to survive, loot, get better weapons ect, typical dayz things, but ontop of this they had a level up system for factions, by killing enemies of your faction you would increase your reputation/level with your faction which in turn gave you benefits, (again can't remember how it all worked) you'd get a new cooler looking uniform and some better spawn equipment ect. There was quite a bit of teamwork involved, as you'd imagine, players forming groups naturally for mutual gain.
Was probably one of the most unique takes on dayz, it was abandoned quite some years ago and they where actually developing their own standalone game but that seems to have been long abandoned aswell. Shame as it was a pretty unique design of dayz
My god, this sounds amazing dude. DayZ definitely needs more of this, or at least options to have this. It would add more structure to the game, probably eliminating most KOS that happens on packed servers, and would allow for more RP opportunities and story driven situations.

The game attracted me for the survival elements, but I’m craving survivor interaction. Something console can’t provide well, mics specifically.
I'd personally recommend DayZ then. Although I've played a lot more Standalone than I have Arma 3 (a little more than double the hours, and some have been just Arma 3 with no mods) I would have to recommend DayZ if that's what you're looking for. There are lots of more crazy, weird and hilarious things happen in SA than Arma 3. There tend to be a lot more kind people too.
Since DayZ started out as an ArmA 2 mod, I suggest you try the ArmA 3 mod. It's much more dynamic and not as slow and heavy as DayZ Standalone is.

It's Exile. There are a3 epoch/overpoch servers that are like dayz. In my opinion A3 mods are way more fun than dayz sa. Yes dayz sa is more polished but a3 mods have more content and is way more enjoyable.
I prefer Arma 2 DayZ mod over Arma 3 Exile

Small note, you said that the DayZ playerbase has been dwindling. That's actually not true at all, DayZ just broke its all time highest player count a couple weeks ago, aswell as breaking that record multiple times in 2022...the game is actually growing

That's the *standalone* playerbase. At it's highest, the DayZ Arma 2 mod had an estimated 5 million players. Nowadays it barely breaks 50,000 if that. So comparatively, DayZ has greatly dwindled from where it once was. For those of us who remember the original Arma 2 mod, the standalone version is a barebone shell of what it once was.
Not saying DayZ standalone is bad, because it has certainly improved from it's initial launch disaster, but a decade into development (or longer), and it is still lacking 90% of base features (like aircraft / boats) that the original mod had is really disappointing. In my opinion, it really doesn't deserve to be called "DayZ" at all. Sure, it has the same map, but it is nothing like the mod that millions used to enjoy.
Standalone is it's own branch, it's own game. And love it or hate it, standalone is what we have left. Gotta take what we can get.

@@SanctifiedLiberty Amazing comment with some amazing points. I honestly don’t remember what I meant by the player base dwindling, but a lot of people think they’re really original by picking and commenting it (not you, just one or two).
Arma 2: DayZ is honestly the best version of the mod (apart from A3Survival, but that’s it’s own thing, it’s not under the name DayZ, so I suppose it’s separate, but probably my favourite) and nothing will ever match that in terms of the “feel” it has . It just feels so special and unique, so exciting and a great mix between realism and fun. DayZ (as you said) just what we have left. It is just the skin and muscles of that, wrapped around a different body. It’s not the same, even though in same ways it looks like it is.
Great points man, and I suppose we all just have to deal with DayZ SA as it is. It’ll take a lot of effort and strength, but it’s the closest we have lol.
i find that heavy modded dayz-sa servers with a lot of guns, items, helis etc while they have their player base and are full of bases etc somehow dont give me the "Dayz experience". vanilla on the other hand is a bit too much for a casual player than me.... lightly modded servers (where servers are not vanilla but have loot tweaks and helpful mods) for me are the best of both worlds. especially in the newer maps as well (non official)
I totally agree. This is exactly the experience I've had. In heavily modded servers, people are too geared and there's too much content and too many teams against you, vanilla doesn't have enough of that, but lightly modded servers have a perfect balance. Project Cherno is a great example of this, it's basically my main server now.
Idk how long it’ll take you reply but I recently just bought Arma 3, and I’ve been trying to find a dayz server that had all the vehicles/helicopters etc. how do I just those and what are the best servers? Also do they have servers like that but without the zombies like Exile I believe? And what are those servers as well? Kinda new to PC so I apologize the lack of knowledge
So if you want an authentic, survivalist, ambient experience, I’d definitely go with A3Survival, which you can find on the Arma 3 Default Launcher that comes up when you press play (at least on Steam). If you’re looking for something with more missions and a more Arma 3 vanilla-esque experience, I’d go with Arma 3 DayZ Exile (Exile is the same, just without zombies basically). I would recommend downloading the A3Launcher to play those and most modded servers though.

What are the mods required to play Arma 3 dayz cause all i can find on the workshop are reposts of various different mods but they are mostly in some other language that i cannot read so it would be rather helpful if someone could list them cause every other video i've seen on it is either an advertisement for there own mod/version of it and its either abandoned or obsolete
There are a few comments asking the same thing and I gave them some instructions on how to download them. Perhaps I should have left a link to some videos about how to download and install them so I apologize for that. Let me know if my replies on those other comments helped!
@@VoidNeon I mean i downloaded some of the mods i remember using back during Frankieonpcin's era but the servers that have those active mods are half dead and only have a pop of like 8-10 people on them i also kinda wished it was like gmod where the mods just auto download while you join the server instead of having to go on one giant fetch quest through the workshop to get everything you need

What are the names of the Arma 3 dayz servers?
If you look up "DayZ" in the A3Launcher, you'll find it or similar servers there.
I like dayz standalone but it doesn't like me cus it would never give me good stuff. I tried the arma 3 mod once a while back, all i remember is "no players and buggy"
The answer is: Arma 2 Dayz is the original and best and kicks both Arma 3s and Standalones butt :)

@@P1T4Bot Depends on what you are looking for. The game is still there. Epoch got a nice update just a few month ago. Good and interesting servers are still there.
The only thing you can't get is the same playercount and the same PvP, but if you, like me, is not very into PvP and more into the survival and the exploration, the game is basically the same. Maybe even better than ever. I hear even Dayz mod for Arma 2 may get an update. And I know there is some very interesting servers coming up.

DayZ: SA has mechanics, gameplay, graphics and psyhics.. but lacks cars, you are constantly running around in that game like its a running sim, and you have nothing except PVP and zombies. But in arma 3 you have great base building, lots of vehicles, roaming AI that you can shoot, loot and sell the booty, even zombies are in the modded servers that are not that bad. So its like 50/50 on both of the games.. theres no perfect server in any of the games.. every server lacks something that other servers may have and.. its frustrating to jump servers to find the perfect one cuz theres none.. I hope they master arma reforger in time and it will be like arma 2 was at its peak. i really hope.
This is all so true. They do have some of those things in Standalone, but they just don’t feel as detailed and polished as Arma 3. I really hope they get their shit together lol.

I don't think it's fair to compare vanilla DayZ SA to Arma 3 DayZ, whereas to play Arma 3 DayZ, you HAVE to mod the game, and every Arma 3 DayZ server is going to be different. There's very few servers running "vanilla" DayZ within Arma 3 (most are Epoch/Rust style servers), so it's hard to compare in a fair way. One point brought up is that Arma has a much larger selection of guns, although 99% of servers use a very large amount of modded guns, however for this video essay you restrict DayZ from having access to modded guns
I think this is comparing apples to oranges, which isn't bad, just I feel it should be pointed out. Maybe you should do a more "fair" video, comparing modded Arma 3 DayZ to modded DayZ SA.

EDIT: Clarifying, when I say comparing to modded DayZ SA, I'm not saying compare it to heavily modded servers like most servers are, just to the ones that add in a little bit of extra content. New guns, maybe on a modded map, etc. That way Arma 3 and DayZ SA have similar amounts of player created content, then I think the comparison would be more fair
I appreciate the constructive criticism man, and I hear your points for sure. I suppose I feel they’re quite even because of how long the two have been in development, and just by which experience is better if someone were to buy one or the other. I also mean Arma 3: DayZ the mod, not the sub genre with all the different mods in it, like Epoch, Origins etc. I realize now I should have probably been more clear in that sense.
I’m definitely going to use this comment to shape a video in the future though, in terms of what you said about comparing the DayZ modded version, so I really appreciate that suggestion.

@@VoidNeon Oh yea I understand why it would feel even. I'd be down to see a video comparing Arma 3 DayZ to DayZ SA, but with mods to make them a little bit closer in content. So if cars are easier to find in Arma 3 DayZ, then they're as easy to find in DayZ SA, that sort of thing. This way it'd be more a comparison of the gameplay mechanics themselves and the feeling of the game, rather than the content.
And I get what you mean about how long they've been in development, because it has been a similar amount of time, however I still think that might not be the right comparison either, as DayZ SA was built in that time from scratch, whereas Arma 3 DayZ was built in that time using an existing game. I think one thing that could be noted in a future video is that DayZ SA is still getting QOL improvements, whereas Arma 3, not so much.

@@VoidNeon i dont think this is an issue really ive been watching the video perfetcly and was able to hear you well even tho i have tinitus and im not the best at hearing most of the time and even then i only had you at 38 vol on a laptop with the stock speaker
after playing both games in 2024 personally i would still prefer arma 3 dayz i encounter so much problems which dayz such as sudden fps drops that become so frequent it is unplayable something I've never delt with in arma 3 i truly hope arma 4 revives the dayz mod because I see that modders are better than a game studio with optimization for example DayZ I'm sitting at 300 fps medium settings on high render distance and my game freezes every 5 second where arma 3 dayz on the finder keepers server you are playing on in the video i sit around 120 fps on medium 2k render distance and the only time it stutters or drops is when im at a mercenary fortress with say 40 npcs and even if then im at around 60-70 fps average. i just have so much problems with dayz i see it as an embarrassment with how unstable and lacklustre the game is.
If you compare standalone to arma mod you HAVE to consider the standalone mods .

Honestly, as old and buggy as Arma2 DayZ is, it's still leagues ahead of Arma3 dayz and SA. Also Arma3 does run a lot better, or about the same. But you gotta mess around with the settings to get it to run smoothly. You've left motion blur on which I don't even know how you managed to play with that. Input delay is not really a thing unless you're on a server with bad ping.
For those still wondering which is better; Take DayZ SA if you want a barebones vanilla experience. Take Arma3 modded to have better vehicles, weapons, base building, missions and vendors.
Strange thing how ArmA 3 is noted as less stable and more laggy than DayZ SA. Because my experience tells me that ArmA 3 runs much better and has much more stable gameplay mechanics than DayZ (for example, sometimes I experienced "phantom items" in DayZ inventory, I don't know how it is today, but it was not cool). Maybe the problem is in the ArmA 3 DayZ Mod itself, because you have to optimise the code, you have to watch the polycount of custom models, you have to develop your game (or mod) properly.
But the biggest problem is the amount of loot. I tried old ArmA 2 DayZ Mod, first shore-town and I have basic supplies, some crappy guns with ammo and will to run further.
DayZ SA, well, you know. No loot for you today. Boring as hell. Even x1000 loot servers have problem with proper loot config giving x1000 useless loot.
I started playing back in arma2 dayz mod. I was horribly disappointed in the SA. Even now the only way to really play it is on modded servers. At least with Arma 3 you have such a large selection of servers and game types people are playing with. I dont think Ive ever found SA to be worth it. It might as well be a bethesda game, the only thing that makes it playable is the community modding and fixing it.
I totally agree man. There's something about it that feels so empty and meaningless, unlike Arma 2: DayZ. It just feels like they wanted to make SA for the sake of it, not actually caring about what made Arma 2: DayZ special and good.

@VoidNeon I definitely agree. Dayz mod felt dangerous and alien at first. Towards the end if you got into modded servers with too much convenience it lost its edge, but you could find pure servers. With the standalone they went so hard at being "realistic", not being able to find ammo, things being hard to source, etc but then the only scary thing was hunger and thirst. So realistic but you die from hunger and thirst in like an hour play time, that shit is ridiculous, completely turned me off to the game. I don't know how many times I died just because I couldn't find a can opener or had to drink from a well and got an infection 🤣

Call me crazy but i think DayZ is the best game out there... Even in 2024! With survival genre that is.. no matter what game i play or try out.. it don't last long and I go straight back to DayZ lol. And the new map coming out is a plus and half. Maybe in one of these generations we'll get a DayZ 2? But will it beat the original?.. i don't know? They sat the bar pretty damn high!

That’s fair. It’s ridiculous how little content they’ve put in the game, and modded really fills that gap I think. However, vanilla is very special and there’s nothing like it. So I totally understand :)

Definitely. Sometimes you really just wanna chill out and be able to relax into a game, for sure. The mods are really good though, I highly recommend loading them up.
@@musio3438 lol becusse pc is too expensive, if I buy a 200 dollar laptop it won't even start up Dayz and that's all I'll probably be able to afford my entire life. Becusse it seems like every PC is like 6000 dollars and anything below that will make the game run at like 1 FPS like a PowerPoint slides how, I had a 1000 dollar all in one office pc at one point it couldn't even load up skyrim so I was like screw this PC sucks my frame rate won't go any higher than a PowerPoint slideshow xbox better give me my 120 FPS without having to do anything besides plug in my cheap console into my cheap TV

@@VoidNeon The Problem is that there is only the Owner's Server and you are not able to use the mod on oyur own because the Owner of the Mod don't share. But its rly the best mod, he has been developing the mod for 6-7 years now.

Battle royale was actually started by H1Z1, but also kinda yes, Arma II DayZ Mod had a big impact on it cause it started the madness where every studio started creating zombie survival games which H1Z1 was at first before converting into BR where after their popularity every studio started creating BR games, which is still happening to this day.. Its unbelieveable how big impact Arma II DayZ Mod had to this day..

I don't know but i thought i would like arma 2 because of dayz.. In which I have 2k hours. Bought arma 2 and "tried" to play it for 5 minutes.. and no way!? Got my refund. Way too janky like the driving especially. And mechanics. Just too different.
The DayZ cars and driving used to be janky and some still think so.. but I think it's awesome and has came a long way. Especially on modded pve servers.

Just because one came from the other (which I mentioned in the video) doesn’t mean you can’t compare the two. Especially given they’re so different. Also, I believe Arma 3 would have a DayZ/zombie mod regardless of if DayZ existed. The Arma games are perfect for this genre of survival open world apocalyptic experiences that DayZ gives. It’s inevitable I believe.

Ignorant. I'm playing Arma 3 DayZ EXILE. They can still release zombie mods that are like DayZ without CALLING IT DayZ.
How do you get the DayZ mod for Arma 3?
There are a few different DayZ mods for Arma 3. A3Survival and Exile being the main ones. To load into Exile, simply look up "DayZ" in the A3Launcher, and allow it to download the mods for you. For A3Survival, look up "A3Survival" on the Arma 3 default launcher (the one that you would use to load into normal Arma 3 matches) and load into it through that, allowing the mods to download from that page.
