  • Doing first cultivation pass on organic corn. After a relatively cool dry spring, we have had an extended warm moist period immediately after planting our corn 🙁. This has prevented the rotary hoe pass.

    Jack, thank you for taking the time to show how you fight the weed battle in less than ideal conditions. Your corn looks really nice. Hope you have a good one Sir!

    I know the adversity is giving you some unwanted stress, but the flip side is it’s providing some excellent “teaching” moments for us and your son. Really appreciate your willingness to share your wealth of knowledge. It appears you have the situation in hand and my bet is that in a month those fields are going to look mighty good.

      Did you get any rain??

      @Geiger Farm , last night it rained for about 15 minutes, still dust underneath, it's been about 3 weeks since a rain now.I do have foxtail coming up in my corn , I'm surprised I had enough moisture to germinate it.

      @@robmiller2919 It’s resilient Rob🙁, but if dry, you have a good chance of killing it young 🤷‍♂️. Last summer taught me that crops come better on the dry end of the spectrum 🤔

    I really enjoy learning how you control your weeds ! I got one more tilling between my corn and beans and i'm going to plant a cover crop . I have to wait until after the summer Solstice to plant . Hopefully my nice clean rows look like a jungle when I pick my corn . It looks like we might be getting some much needed rain . Thanks for sharing and have a great evening !

      I sincerely hope you get some rain Aaric. The drought around us keeps getting closer. Even though the wet weather has stressed me, it’s far better than no rain 😳. Keep that ground covered 👍🏻. When the wheat and oats come off, we are going to plant our first highly diverse CC🙂.

      @@GeigerFarm I bought a bunch of different cover crop seeds today . I'm a little curious about the Korean Lespedeza .

    This is why planting heavily, especially in organic, is important.
    Plant 30K or even 32,000 and bury a few plants. Under these conditions, burying a few corn plants is a necessity.
    The cost of the extra seed could easily be calculated. If the seed cost per bag is under $200.00 and the seed count is 80,000, the corn seedlings that are being buried, are costing well under $10.00 per acre. I don't know what your seed cost is but it certainly isn't $400.00+ per bag like some of the "stacked" hybrids are. If those buried seedlings are costing only in the $5.00 per acre range, that's nothing. There are so many other variables that can take out far more than $5.00 to $10.00 per acre.
    A second rig running is fantastic.
    Lookin' good overall though, Jack. Give that field a month; it's going to look nice. 200+ bushel corn coming in that nice bottom??? 👍👍👍👍

      Agree! Our normal planting population is now 32,500. I think that a final stand of 26,000+ will not limit yield in our environment. This field has excellent yield potential...other that the 3/4 mile edge next to the river/trees on which deer like to graze😐. The seed here ran $240 per unit. It is what it is...

    what about finger weeders on the front of the cultivator? or would they too aggressive in the row without a row tracking system?

    • @GeigerFarm
      @GeigerFarm  Před rokem

      This environment would be perfect for a tine weeder or a hybrid spike/tine setup like I talked about several years ago 🙂

      @@GeigerFarm you seem to have very clean fields, some of the cleanest I've seen with fewer passes than others, must be doing something right. farming is tough enough, farming without the fire and forget weed weapons demands so much more. much respect, thanks for responding
