Thank you for doing so. NOTHING is worse than somebody trying to figure out the BART ticket machine in front of you when you are in a hurry. Homeless people often like to hang out right next to the machine and aggressively panhandle you while you have your wallet out. It's great.

I'm surprised she found one that works AND accepts credit cards. None of the machines actually inside the gate accept credit cards. I have no idea why. It's terrible.
I first used the ticket vending machine (and even the fare gate, which both were made by Cubic Transportation Systems) at the Walnut Creek station on the yellow line of the Bay Area Rapid Transit railway just before riding on the train for the first time on 4/18/2007 (the 101st anniversary of the great quake and fire that almost wiped San Francisco out).
It's a little different in other countries, where you first punch in the station you want to go to. As soon as the machine tells you the amount you need to pay, then you insert in your money or your credit card. And if the money you put in is more than the price of the ticket, the machine will give you change.
Parking tickets can be purchased through the ticket machine. Clipper card users can also pay for parking via their Clipper card. There are also parking permits for people who park at the station for the daily commute. (I have not tried any of this, this is just what I have heard)
I am glad you like it! We made it because we freaked out watching everyone zoom by and we first timers not knowing how to even start. You will quickly gain command of this, however, and you will love how easily you can get all over San Francisco! All I want to say is Thank you! We not used to take BART, don't know how to use it. Me and my friends was want to add value to card, but it pop out another new clipper card, so confusing. We wish someone could tell us how to do it.
BART wants you to put too much on and then end up with a ticket with 20 cents on it that gets stuck in a drawer or thrown out. They collect tens of millions of extra fares per year this way. That's why BART was the last to join the TransLink/Clipper card system and for a while they wanted to have a separate BART purse on Clipper.
I remember back when I lived in SF in 1985. I went into City Hall to buy a transit pass for $23. The date was August 25. As usual, I had my head up my butt and when the clerk handed me my August transit pass (full price for a pass that was 95% expired), I pocketed it and walked away. In my life I have done some spectacularly stupid things, and that was one of the most idiotic. I occasionally wonder: Did that clerk *deliberately* sell me that nearly worthless pass? Guess I'll never know.
you mention discount tickets.... like senior tickets ... but no where do you say how or where to buy them. you show how to buy a regular BART ticket in a BART station machine but never mention the discount tickets. If you Google senior BART tickets it leads u to believe that you can get then at Lucky Markets. Not So !!
I can't believe people -apparently intelligent people--can't figure out how to use this ticket machine. It is completely intuitive if you were born before 1980. "You have to pay a different amount wherever you g? What a radical concept! Ever buy an airplane ticket?
