So I tried playing ARKHAM CITY After Suicide Squad...

- Following Suicide Squad's flop, I had to return to my personal favorite Rocksteady game in Batman: Arkham City. From the story, to the perfectly tuned combat, and the rogue's gallery, it is top to bottom phenomenal. Doubly so after finishing Suicide Squad...

Arkham City is timeless
I just don't get why Talia let joker kidnap her when she was gonna stab him. Why did she even tell Joker about the Lazarus pit? It's stupid
No it’s not. It’s an open world game. All open world games AGE. Knight is still holding up for NOW, but give it 5 more years & Arkham knight will start showing its age.
Arkham Asylum is the only timeless game because it’s a linear style game + a straight forward story.
@@-Anonymous-.city also has a straight forward story
@@Daddy-rv7wm No. you need to play the first game & others to understand certain details. Otherwise you won’t fully know from just playing the game. + Ra's al Ghul disappears, & Joker dies.
Asylum has all the makings of a 1of1 timeless game. The comic Art style, linear environments, simplistic gameplay.
City has SOME but the open world & traversal mechanics hold it back when compared to gaming outside the Arkham
Franchise.
The Arkham anthology is timeless
Truly a timeless classic. I honestly still prefer Arkham Asylum simply because the smaller scale and shorter length better fits my personal preferences, but the way Rocksteady expanded on and added depth to their own universe in City was incredible and really helped to set this Batman and Gotham apart from TAS to be its own wonderful thing. I also think this is Mark Hamill's greatest performance as the Joker. The nasty, gurgling voice with hints of desperation you got from this sickly Joker contrasted brilliantly with the Clayface Joker's "classic" feel.
My friend likes Asylum the most because of its vibe
Ngl your friend is based. (I have the same opinion) @@ProudAjax
In my opinion asylum is the best because of the metroidvania style of gameplay and map
I prefer the Asylum story. Arkham City is a lot more convoluted
Granted, it’s based off of comic books and cartoons, but still I def preferred the Asylum story which felt more contained and coherent
Asylum is trash and City is mid. Knight is the best by a 100 mile margin.
Arkham city is, and probably always will be my favorite game of all time, being a massive Batman fan this game is just something that can’t be topped for me, with all its content, replay-ability, and the post game open world exploration, sure Arkham knight improved on the gameplay and open world but man, there’s just something special bout Arkham city
Arkham Asylum and Arkham City had Paul Dini as the lead writer where the quality in the writing for Arkham Knight was a significant drop. Paul Dini is an incredible Batman writer going back to the animated series. He doesn’t get enough credit for Arkham Asylum and Arkham City as the lead writer.
I'm playing through it for the first time. It outclasses so many modern games it is obscene. There's just nothing like Arkham City at night. As a former scoundrel, I love it.
you need to play arkham knight then its my fav game after rdr2
@@shadowking773 I am not an AK or RDR2 fan.
@@jonasking9587ak will hit hard if you play it after completing city, i always play them in order, first arkham origins then asylum then city then knight
The Mr freeze boss battle is the best boss battle I’ve ever played the amount of fear and adrenaline I felt running from him trying to figure out how to take him down will never be matched
Suicide Squad was a soul crushing experience. Even not playing it, whoever was responsible for the choices behind the story and characters didn't get it. The sliver lining is that it made me want to replay the Arkham series and I'm going through Asylum which is amazing. As for City, peak superhero game as far as I am concerned. It did everything a good sequel does: improves on the gameplay, and the story was just as good as the first. I still prefer Asylum for the horror and closed in area of Arkham but City is great. Don't let Suicide Squad destroy this really solid superhero trilogy(Even if Arkham Knight had some problems).
Can’t forget Origins
I'm playing throughout Origins (since i never play it ) and yeah great games all of them.
Imagine if you grew up with those games and it were your first games ever. I guess your standard for videogames were really high and every other game had to compete with them. I guess they thought Arkham knight is just magic when they jumped from origins to ps4.
well thats exactly my story with the games.
Just because if these games i became a gamer. i can nearly play them blind, know every dialogue and know every single riddler trophy from every arkham game. City alone has over 400.
@@GodoMatrixOrigins was my first Batman game and the only problem there is the technical performance on PS3 the boring open world and the bad side missions. The story is my favorite to be honest
@@raidengoodman8754origins is solid but that goofy counter system knocks it down a tier.
I still have the collector’s edition with the black and white Batman statue. Not only that, but I still have both the PS3 and 360 batarang controllers that were shown on the catalog!
I too have that statue still in the box.
Arkham City was such an old school gaming experience i remember literally playing that all night on a work day lol definitely one of the more recent ultra classics.💯
Yeah Arkham City really is one of the greatest games ever made. The atmosphere is really important in the game. Something that I haven't seen a lot of people talk about but that I think is super important is the fact that Rocksteady knew how to LIGHT this game. Like the moonlight mixed with neon signs and street lights paired with the nighttime setting REALLY give this game a vibe that has just not been replicated ever since. (Knight did a good job at lighting too but City really paved the way.) Great game in all areas but I just think the atmosphere is something that keeps me coming back. Great video as always!
Not just gameplay but graphics, spacing, acting... everything of this game hold up extremely well. Also, this game size of open world is perfect, not too big for you to feel it's empty but not too small either, just enough to fill in fun 30-40 hours of contents in every inch of the city. Just a perfect action- open world game in my opinion.
The music in arkham city is awesome. The first stealth part in the church always really amazed me. The way the music bumps up. And with it you can feel the fear of the prisoners rise. So cool.
RIP Kevin Conroy and Carl Weathers
Carl was great on this game
@@aroccoification bwahaha
Best one out of the trilogy imo
We need a “ remembering the James Bond games” could be a fun one!
Minimme is the channel for you if you’re into bond games
Arkham City has got to be in the top 5 games of the 7th Gen. I played it about a month ago and it still holds up as a masterpiece.
Damn straight
You guys remember how suicide squad was teased at the end of origins and then 10 years went by as if it was never going to happen? Im certain what they had in mind was not a live service looter shooter
I mean....yeah no shit?
@@ragemonkey117 just asking if people remember no need to be weird about it
@@ragemonkey117I mean yeah… no shit?
@@InsaneMagee He's broken, someone turn 'em on and off again.
The thing that's really weird is origins was made by wb montreal while all the rocksteady games use the bat family like robin and nightwing but then WB montreal made the separate universe gotham knights with the bat family while rocksteady made the suicide squad game.
i always play this game around christmas time, it gets me so nostalgic for when i got this in High School. will always have a special place in my heart!
RAHHHH! Me too, I used to play through the Arkham games all the time during my winter breaks!
Yeah I’d think Batman becomes seasonal during the fall into the holidays.. I loved Asylum but need to go back and finish City.. Been liking Origins too except those weird difficulty spikes like the Deathstroke boss
Played this for the first time just this past year...brilliant.
My head cannon is that suicide squad is not in the arkham universe but a eiffrent timeline
My head cannon is sushi squad game never happened , it never came out, doesn’t exist.
Oh Matty brought out the Hibachi grill today!!
Lesss go!! 🔥🔥🔥
I played city waiting for the suicide squad verdict. Needless to say I'm going to play knight instead
Try origins if you haven't already. I loved it
@@wingleburt3146 yeah I love that one too!
Comparing AC to Sewer Slide Squad is like comparing a finely crafted Swiss watch to a slap braclet you traded your tickets for at chuckee cheese
Perfect name 👍👍
Great retrospective to a great game! And a cool beanie!
It's just hard to believe this batman would go out the way he did but man arkham city is just a banger
we love you matty! you make a lot of great points
Harley was crazy in love with Joker and felt indifferent to Ivy? How was she in a relationship with Ivy according to Suicide Squad.
Rocksteady….. MAKE SUPERMAN
It is great to play the arkham games now knowing that the bench is where it all ends :)
With suicide squad being an elseworlds story, I’m thinking they have some plan to bring them back in the later season releases.
probably, but that's kinda lame in it's own way. I'm so tired of multiverse stories where nothing ever matters lol@@thatonegeeksite5251
3:22 I think Batman forgot to put his head on
Despite already owning the 360 and Return to Arkham versions I ended up buying Asylum and City on Steam because this past weekend. Both still hold up wonderfully. Really enjoyed Origins and Arkham Knight so those will get a replay as well. Genuinely happy for people who are enjoying SS. But this Rocksteady did Batman wrong. So gonna play the greatest hits.
I dont have a problem with people enjoying the game. I do have a problem with WB expecting this barebones game to be a long term live service which sucks because the players get screwed in the end.
@@TheForever206i will say this. I personally believe SS gameplay itself is fun as a Deadshot main. But the actual missions are so repetitive. Same thing every time even in the boss fights. But after beating it, I can't understand how anybody would ever want to spend a dime more on the game other than the initial purchase of the game itself.
Arkham City is the only game I finished and jumped immediately into NG+ to finish again for the trophy lol. I absolutely loved that game when it came out and even playing it now it holds up incredibly well.
arkham city made my 2011 christmas the best experience i had ever had
Yo same here
I enjoyed Arkham Knight the first time I played it, but the second time I just couldn't do it. The batmobile and pacing of the game just made it a chore.
I loved all 3 of my playthroughs of Arkham City. I agree it is the best in the series. Asylum was great too, but the sauce was perfected with City.
Yeah im playing knight right now and it's definitely a really good game and the batTANK is fun but the batMOBILE not so much
I remember getting this for Christmas for 360 in 2011. I opened it secretly a few days early tried it out and then re packaged it 😂😂. Sad about joker and still am to this day
Ive been playing through all the arkham games again on pc. And city was always my favorite. But now Origns is slowly becoming my fave. The graphics on pc still hold up. Great voice acting by batman and joker even tho its not hamil or Connroy. The origin Joker model looks great. And the story is really good. Hoping matty one day delves back into origins with a thorough analysis.
Just replayed it with texture mods and advanced launcher, still an absolutely incredible game. Freeflow combat is so satisfying.
I loved replaying this on my series x. It looks great
I recently bought the Rocksteady trilogy because it's that good. Also now on PC, I get to play these games on Ultra baby!
Just beat this game again and it's still so good
I miss the old Rocksteady
12:10 I completely forgot about Gotham city imposters. I remember years ago when I'd see trailers for it from DC animation dvds
I'm playing again for the 20th time because my 4 year old twin boys seen it in my library, thought they would be more scared but they loved it
Yeah and I feel like this game feels so much better than new open world games is because its so much smaller and it just makes for such dense world
I'm back in Arkham City myself. I'm seeing some graphical glitches and low texture loading/popping. Is that from the 4k mod? I haven't noticed anything in my playthrough, but I can also pause this video and rewind to check.
Yeah, games really don't need to be so big. We just want 'quality' again.
Agreed. There is also such a thing for a game to be "too big."
Arkham City felt just the right size.
arkham knight was perfect balance of big and quality
Arkham city timeless classic. I was very excited when it came out.the 2ed video game I ever played.
If you check the credits of ss and compare that team to the ones who worked on the arkham trilogy you'll see that none of the people who worked on that worked on the ss worked on the arkham trilogy. Theyre all new hires who joined after arkham knight so they didn't have the experience or passion the original rocksteady team had. They left with the founder to form hundred stars games.
This isn’t true lmao.
I'm just gonna pretend the suicide squad kill the justice league is not canon
I replay all 3 every couple years. They’re permanently installed on the Xbox. So good. Will revisit on steam deck oled when I get it too as I own all 3 plus origins there!
Can’t tell how many times I replayed Arkham City that game is a masterpiece. If you own the disc version you can play it on Ps5 with 60 fps if you don’t install the patch.
your lofi music is fire too
Crazy how we seem to be going backwards in terms of video game quality instead of forwards
looking at the 360 makes me wanna cry with the recent xbox leaks
SO gald I kept my old consoles. Xbox has been getting crushed since the botched Xbox One launch.
@@MysticbladegodLet’s be honest, Xbox hasn’t been good since the 360
I miss the competitive atmosphere of the PS3 and 360. Both companies gave it their all and though they both made mistakes both of them put out so many great games.
@@josephbuchanan2319 the 360/PS3 era was the golden age of gaming imo. Competition between Xbox/PS sparked great games from both 1st parties and it was the perfect melding of big budget and innovation throughout the industry. Sucks we'll probably never see a time like that again
@@malangadong_1685interesting. I guess it depends on age and when you started gaming. For me, there will never be a better time than the SNES vs Genesis era where competition brought on so many great games. For me, there will never be a better era. Guess it’s a generational thing. We are both right about one thing. Competition drives creativity and leads to better games. We’re kinda losing that in modern times.
Arkham City was great, but you unboxing the game reminded me that Catwoman was sorta day 1 DLC, as in it was included if you bought the game new, but you had to buy it separately if you got the game used without the code. It wasn't just her separate challenge mode portions, but her integrated storyline that was crucial for developing her character.
Red Dead Redemption 2, if you know then you know, is an open world game that has that tension in the last third of the game. But yeah Arkham City and Knight are among my fave superhero games
I remember playing this and being surprised by how good it was.
Suicide Squad game should have been DLC for the new Batman game. Could have worked. Then they could have introduced The Justice League into the game series for the future. Such a missed opportunity.
I did the same thing here. Learning about the story of Kill the Justice League and how they disrespected Batman, I needed to return to the REAL Arkham games, I had to. It feels so good to play these masterpieces, Origins included.
It is pretty weird that how Rocksteady went from making one of the best licensed DC superheroes of all time, to making one of the worst after 12yrs. Strange how video games have been devolved since.
Not that weird, if you've been following the trends of modern gaming and capitalism.
What is under your KOTOR stuff when your opening the game box? Looks like its Hades related.
Arkham Origins , DLC Cold Cold Heart is perfect too
Such a good game one I plan on going back to to wrap up the platinum on it!
City was just the perfect balance. Asylum was great when that came out. Besides the final Joker titan boss, it was great. But City was on another level. The story, upgraded gameplay, gadgets, characters, and scale were all bigger and it worked really well.
Knight tried to expand on that idea and unfortunately, it’s what made it an inferior experience. Yes, the free flow was improved on. But why did they make the Batmobile so heavily relied on!?!?!
They probably thought the Batmobile was cool or just included it because of fan pressure. It's much easier to get around without the car, anyway.
Just redownloaded asylum and city this morning crazy timing
I also recommend you try Arkham Origins. That one didn’t click with lots of people in 2013, but I feel time has been good to it. Certainly not better than Arkham City, but really good in its own way. It’s just too bad WB won’t re-release it.
I replayed Asylum and City last year. Currently playing Knight now and black sheep us a little harsh in my opinion, its still fantastic its open world design is levels above what we get today.
Boaaa I remember my first time fighting Freeze. That gave me Fromsoft levels of sweat 😂
Matt needs to cleanse himself after his "experience" with Suicide Squad KTJL. And Arkham City is JUST the game to cleanse him.
Playing through Arkham City now via GOG on PC. This franchise is a masterpiece. Far surpasses that crap that is Suicide Squad. Rocksteady has fallen off hard. They have to go back to the Arkhamverse and that style of gameplay.
Arkham City blew my mind when I first played it, and it is still great all these years later.
I just picked up the arkham trilogy on steam, can't wait to play them!
Joker's Carnival is still one of my favorite challenge map
Absolutely a masterpiece
I also went back to play these after Sushi Squad disaster. I wish Rocksteady stayed & made more of these instead of Sushi flop, they could have made more money (and probably saved their studio, its gonna be bad after killing JL failed)
I can’t tell you what happened.
1. Greed
2. Sweet Baby Inc
I’ve been replaying this on the Wii U. Wanted to try out the gamepad features. It’s holds up well except the 30 FPS is annoying .
It turns out the game is good marketing for the Arkham games
I always found the idea that they turned part of the city into a prison silly. But still an amazing game. Playing this for the first time was epic. Especially the end sequence climbing the tower and coming up the elevator.
And the first fight in the museum where Penguin lets like 30 thugs attack you was awesome.
The first four Arkham games were amazing. Including Origins. Suicide Squad doesnt exist.
Does anyone know the best way to play this game? Trying to play on pc (steam) because I need 60fps and I’m getting stutters like crazy on an rtx 4080. This can’t be normal. Re4 and god of war run perfect on my pc.
I think the stealth in City is the best its been in the series too.
It’s funny how the Arkham Trilogy falls in line with the Dark Knight trilogy as far as opinions/quality.
Hell yeah!!!
ironically we are all going back to Arkham for actual gaming therapy
You can buy all Batman games for the same price as suicide squad
Throwing in the classic Jonkler reaction face was a nice nod to those from the Reddit Alsume, intentionally or not.
Top 10 game of all time for me, and possibly best narrative in gaming period.
Arkham games are timeless but Suicide Squad is in fact a BAD game
Im sorry you had to play suicide squad.
One of my BEST gaming experiences of all time. Akrham Knight was pretty great. City though.... FLAWLESSL
This game runs amazing on the Steamdeck.
I wish they would patch the Arkham trilogy to run at 60 fps on ps5, 4k would be nice too but give me that 60 fps.
Maybe I’ll give it another shot, this is the only one I didn’t finish. Got bored after the bane fight.
Arkham city was my first in the series and my god I put hours into this shit on my 360
funny how I'm doing the same, if Suicide Squad did anything is that it makes you wanna replay good games instead.
After playing it, it just made me want to remind myself who the fuck Arkham Batman is again. Destroying his enemies mentally and physically
Sweey baby games is how we got here.
The game should’ve been called “Suicide Squad: Kill the Rocksteady.”
I got return to arkham for £15 and arkham knight for £4, omg i cant wait to play the arkham trilogy
AK is a slog with the Bat tank, but if you got the DLC chapters of the other characters they don't out stay any welcome.
Currently playing the Wii U armored Edition as a first timer and its fun and has an unlocked Frame rate that can be horrid or ok. I also love the Suicide Squad game regardless of whatever.
You could play as Catwoman only if you bought the game new, else you needed to get the online pass lol
literally doing the same to palette cleanse lmao
