The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. A song without words, sung by a group without instruments. A well-deserved Grammy
12 Days of Christmas. They're just flexing in this song.

Most pentaholics will tell you that their favorite song is the one they are listening to at the time. I think a fun, bouncey older original song like "Sing" would be a good follow-up to a weightier piece like Hallelujah.

Just to be clear, this is definitely not a "churchy" song. Listen to the lyrics. It's about a toxic sexual relationship, the struggle between human emotions using biblical analogies. Cohen originally wrote numerous versus, reportedly 150, and spent five years writing it, sometimes banging his head on the floor while wearing only his underpants. Definitely not "church" worthy, but nonetheless a masterpiece. PTX's version is nothing short of stunning.

Thanks for this. It drives me kinda nuts how many people think this is a religious song. Some of Cohen’s other verses are quite graphic.

@@taligeoghan8361 I see this claim posted often but I can't find a single article or interview where Cohen says this. The only reference to Cohen's opinion I've ever found was an interview with Scott regarding their original plan for the song as a Christmas song and Cohen did not approve of their proposed changes to the lyrics so they scrapped that version. I'm sure he heard it before he passed and I have no doubt he liked it but I don't see anyone anywhere actually quoting him saying it other than people in social media comments.
I'd love to see such an article or interview if you can point me to one.

    • @heinleinreader
      @heinleinreader Před rokem +1

@@judithL3100 Even what's here can be construed as somewhat graphic. You have a verse about a shootout. You have a verse, for pity's sake, about a guy watching a woman take a shower. Granted, some of the others are far more graphic, even to the point of being pornographic, but it is not a religious song by any stretch. That doesn't mean it has not got the ability to drive a quasi-religious fervor.

    • @thechomiji
      @thechomiji Před rokem +1

@@heinleinreader , "woman taking a shower" refers also to the story about Susannah and the elders in the book of Daniel (considered part of the Apocrypha). But yes, that's a story about lust.

FYI, the "baritone guy" is Scott, tall and blond. He has a phenomenal range, and will fill in bass line for the bass singer if he is doing a solo. The bass singer in the group is Avi, and he's the one with the long hair and beard. Avi is actually a basso profundo, which is the lowest range of bass singers. Avi also has a tremendous range, and can sing overtones, which is singing two notes at once. Avi left Pentatonix amicably for family and personal reasons at the end of their 2017 tour, and was replaced by Matt. Since then Avi has built a phenomenal solo career, capitalizing on his exceptional voice and songwriting abilities. Bass singers tend to ballads, so his new style may not be your thing, but the 7Layers recording of "All is Well" (not the duet with Joy Williams) is breathtaking.

  • @neetgupta1
    @neetgupta1 Před 2 lety +38

Hallelujah is such a good example of how PTX does 'upgrades' not covers! This is often the first 'mitch slap' for people too - when Mitch (in the hat) does his incredible counter tenor range. Avi (long-haired Jesus-type!) was the bass of the group but when he sang his solo (in the higher baritone range) Scott (tall, blonde) takes over his low bass line. Scott has unbelievable range and can hit high, falsetto tenor notes too. Avi was replaced by Matt as the bass singer in 2017. Matt is great too, in a different way. He doesn't go as low as Avi perhaps but he can go incredibly high too (listen to the last notes of Joyful Joyful from their live Evergreen Christmas tour last year).

I'm a baritone, and I've performed in everything from choirs to musicals to Irish Folk. Those bass notes are a thing of my dreams. The bearded singer (Avi) covers them for everything but his solo, when the blonde baritone (Scott) takes them up virtually without flaw. This song gives me chills at several points, but none more so than that final B1b that Avi is sending out like an earthquake.
The singer that replaced Avi (Matt) doesn't quite have that low note as consistently, but he has a little stronger upper range, as heard in "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)"

For a "typical" Christmas upgrade by Pentatonix, try God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. They do the first verse as if they're out caroling on the street, very traditional. Then they put their PTX spin on it, redoing the whole song with beatboxing, fast video editing, etc, and it changes the entire song!
Since you've already watched Can't Hold Us, you might want to try their version of Thrift Shop - where the Trio (Mitch, Scott, Kirstie) all rap in unison! And there's a video of them performing the song in an airport over the PA system while they were waiting to catch a plane - recorded on someone's phone, but it's still pretty amazing, and funny to watch the expressions of the people who are witnessing it but don't know what's going on!

I keep hearing people say that Hallelujah is sung in church or that they think of it as a Christmas or a Christian song - that always surprises me because it's really not. The most well-known lyrics are cast in Biblical imagery, but Cohen claimed up to 150 draft verses that he would also switch around during performances. I guess this isn't really vital information ;-), I just think it's a pity if people are put off by what they assume is a religious connection because it's just too brilliantly lyrical for that! Also, most of the Biblical imagery is actually from the Hebrew Bible so the religious connotations are not even necessarily (just) Christian.

Pentatonix always add non-Christmas songs to their Christmas albums. They would be the first to admit that this is not really a Christmas song. There is another song with the word "Hallelujah" in it that may have been sung at church. The lyrics of this song are not church-like. It's about love gone wrong, sex, betrayal, etc. Thank you for reacting to this beautiful Pentatonix video. Starting now, you can react to 2 Pentatonix "Christmas" songs every day until 12-25-22 and still not complete them all.

Many people assume the song _Hallelujah_ is religious. Even I admit it sounds that way, and understand if people are uplifted by it. But Leonard Cohen, the songwriter, was at various times an atheist and Buddhist. To him, it was a song of desire, even sexual desire. He used Biblical allusion and repeated the word "halllelujah" as tools, but his meaning was not what many assume.⬅
BTW, even Pentatonix understood this was not a religious song. They originally recorded an actual religious--oriented version. The sent it to Mr. Cohen as a courtesy, who was on his deathbed at the time. He asked them that if they wanted to record his song, please use his lyrics. They did, and released the accurate version, becoming their biggest hit.

To me there are only two versions of Hallelujah that are worth preserving for eternity: Leonard Cohen's original is a beautiful, intimate, bittersweet confession of love that wasn't meant to be. Pentatonix' rendition is takes that realization of loss and gives it wings of an angel, turning the sense of depression and emptiness into newly realized freedom - and in the final verses, PTX let the song soar high like a hopeful hymn.
I acknowledge that Hallelujah was performed by many acclaimed artists, but none of them ever came even close to these two versions.

Each of the members is a musical powerhouse. Combined, they are a force of nature. One thing to comment about is that there are 3 verses and 5 times the chorus sung. The incredible thing is that each is a distinctly different arrangement than rhe others. With the verses it is not surprising as the lead moves from one to the next.

I've been a fan of Pentatonix since day one on the TV show the Sing Off. They just had something more than any other group. The tall blonde is Scott, the dark haired guy is Mitch, the beatboxer is Kevin, the girl is Kirstin and the one with long hair and beard is Avi who was replaced by Matt when he left on good terms. (Trust me, I was sad he left but Avi Kaplan has done some solo stuff) I'm not a huge fan of Christmas songs myself (my sister has tormented me with them growing up), but Pentatonix cover of "Mary, did you know?" Is one of my faves and their version is my second favorite (someone I personally know sang it and their voice is very dear to me) czcams.com/video/ifCWN5pJGIE/video.html

    Pentatonix Songs:
(React to EVERYTHING on their channel . . it’s an entire rabbit hole of material past and present. They were amazing when they started and have only gotten better as they have worked more. ..
2021: “Christmas Under the Stars” to see their work LIVE
Evergreen Tour 2021 - Anything LIVE from their tour is also great to listen to for “real LIVE” performances. . . .they never disappoint.
    90’s Dance Medley
ALL Christmas is Awesome (fun ones: Mr. Grinch, All My Favorite Things, 12 Days Xmas)
    Imagine
    Say Something
    Sing! (Original)
    Be My Eyes (Original)
    Mad World
    Happy Now (Original)
    The Prayer
    Can’t Hold Us
    Amazing Grace
    Mary Did You Know?
    Are You That Somebody….
Come Along (It’s a FUN one, too!)
    Havanna
    Coffee In Bed (Original)
    Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody
    Little Drummer Boy
    Sound of Silence
    Notes:
Original Bass: Avi Kaplan (People say he looks like Jesus) - Lett the group for family reasons. Matt Salle replaced him.
When Matt has a verse, Scott (blonde) will step in on Bass. He (& Matt) has an insane range!
Mitch: He’s a chameleon in both clothes and hair with an amazing voice and crazy range.
Kirstin: Only Female, amazing voice and strength
    Kevin: Beatboxer & Singer - He’s amazing
** EVERYTHING they do sounds the same LIVE. Their philosophy is that if they can’t perform it live and sound the same, they won’t cover or make the song.
Scott, Mitch, Kirsten are all from Arlington, TX (DFW Area) and went to school together

This is not a Christmas song. They did include it on one of their Christmas albums, which is perhaps partly why people think that it is. But just because it's called "Hallelujah" does not make it a "churchy" song, or--honestly--a Christmas song. It's extremely complex, and Leonard Cohen was in no way a simple writer.

You've probably had way too many suggestions of PTX to listen to but once you start down that rabbit hole, there's no turning back! You've reacted to a couple of my favorites already, including this one. Some other really good ones are Imagine, The Prayer, Amazing Grace, Mary Did You Know (seems like a lot of religious songs but it's worth the listen even if that's not your particular flavor), Mad World, The Wizard of Ahhhs with Todrick Hall... I could go on! 😍

Hallelujah is not a church song. Unless the lyrics are changed of course. Pentatonix is singing the original lyrics written by Leonard Cohen.
