If there is one thing I’ve learned after 40 years plus, being an audiophile, it’s that perfection is unquestionably unobtainable. Regardless of what equipment you have, there will always be, compromises. Manufacturers will tender solutions to many of these compromises, but often these have their own caveats. “For every action there are consequences”!
Oh, in my humble experience, having your knob all the way up, provides maximum, mutual pleasure!
audiophile...smh
This amp was my first audiophile product. It’s excellent. I used it with Linton speakers from Wharfdale’s. 4 ohm
I have one here and it’s going back.
Make no mistake, I like it a lot. The amplifier part of it is wonderful. It’s much better than the old N803 I’ve had for years. I’m smitten with it.
Why am I returning it? Most of these I can live with, but the total plus the last deal killer tipped the scale:
a. No line outs (for headphone amps and the like)
b. Bluetooth 4.2 (!) Bluetooth 5.3 is widespread, while 6.0 has been released
c. WiFi 5 and not the current 6
d. No scrubbing on any source.
f. No USB drive support!
e. Deal killer - gapless playback (still!) not [fully] supported on any source. File streaming comes close, but fails the Abbey Road test on the last three tracks.
Yamaha has had nearly a decade to sort out the scrubbing/gapless issue. I had hoped that the N2000 would be the end-all, but it is not to be. I contacted Yamaha only to be told that “gapless playback is not supported”. Period. No mention of plans or wishes.
I don’t know why no review has mentioned that. I’m thinking sponsorship. 🤨
Hey, I can buy an A-S1200 and a Node X and have it all except for YPAO. I can live with that deficit, I think.
Edit: Since I got the silver one via Amazon and for just $3300, I’m pretty sure I’m going to cough for a Node X and use them together. The Eversolo needs work yet, so Node it is. I have experience with BluOs via the NAD M10 v2 and it’s the gold standard for streaming. The only thing it lacks besides a display is the ability to get Linn Radio, which the Yammy does. I’ll use the 2000a for internet radio and BluOS for all else. It also supports a USB drive, which is another fault for the Yamaha.
Gapless playback, Scrubbing ? USB ? Really , ? Holy crap your life must be boring af .
How does the Yamaha sound compared to the M10v2. These two are on the top of my list. Thanks.
@@antonybeech4298 the Yamaha seems to sound better and YPAO is much less fussy than Dirac. I guess it doesn’t matter though, as disabled it and now use Pure Direct. I also like the hands on nature of the Yamaha.
@@billd9667 Thanks for that. Good to know.
Another thing I found out is how incredibly easy it is to scratch the top of the 2000a. It looks like it has one thin coat of paint with no primer or clear coat. I don’t remember being rough or careless with it, yet there are three areas of scuffing that cannot be polished out.
Ron, I appreciate the tone controls and room correction measurements and graphs. This is also helpful info. Keep up the good work!!!
Hey thanks man! Appreciate that!
I’ve always loved Yamaha’s design. I appreciate how they incorporated a screen to better hide it. That black bar takes inspiration from their CA-700 and I’m digging it.
I thought that combining a black bar with a silver face looked pretty weird, so I got the all black version, which I think looks a lot better. But I've never liked silver anyway. I don't want a bright silver component screaming in my eyes while I'm trying to relax and have a good listen.
@@williamdirks5805how do you like it? How does it sound?
@@bigmacfullerton7870 It sounds good. Clarity, detail, and soundstage are its strengths. On its own it may not be the richest or most full- bodied kind of sound, but I think you can get that with the right speakers, and it's reasonably powerful. Internal DAC is fine; to get a better one you'd most likely have to spend $700 or more. The headphone amp is really not too bad at all for a receiver; has good power and clarity. I don't really use the room correction or other features. (I'm speaking of the R-N2000A)
An equalizer should be an essential part of any system. It is the component that allows you to "shape" your sound to suit your preferences or to overcome the limitations of your other system components. Treble and bass alone will not do much to shape your sound.
Great discussion - I think reviews like yours talking about how close to standard they are out of the box is critical. Hopefully it will get the manufactures to feel it’s a priority to have a mode that focused on the standard. Look forward to seeing how your tackle this.
That’s my hope as well.
I predict that there will be a Mk II version coming along in a year with the MC phono input and double sub outputs. Of course it will also include the obligatory 25-40% price increase.
If you're right it will be based on the far superior AS2200 and not the AS1200.
loved the test tracks, great music!
Obviously, the star here is the overall aesthetic and meters.
However, the more one learns about what Yamaha is doing, the star is revealed to be the execution, ... a solid piece, with a range of multiple attributes.
Hopefully we're in the eve of a retro arms race of releases!
- Wouldn't it be wonderful to see Pioneer release a Spec 1 retro homage loaded with current state of the art best practices?
- How about a Soundcraftsman full stack?
The had those amazing power output LEDs; both left-to-right, and vertical.
They had nicely layed out preamps, graphic EQs, LED spectral analyzers, multiple amplifiers.
All matching in a stack.
- way too niche to be successful, but a replication of Sinatra's famous three channel rig at Two Palms;
Presto reel-to-reel, McIntosh pre, Fisher tuner, feeding three big Altec monitors, left, center and right, powered by three custom Valentino monoblocks.
Yeah, way too niche ...
But Pioneer and Soundcraftsman, hell yeah bring them back!
Does the N-S2000A digitize all incoming signals? Or does it only do that when YPAO is turned on? Wondering for those who also like vinyl playback. Thanks
Dear Ron,
I've been missing quite some reviews on your channel of lately. But this one caught my attention because I had this amp (and yamaha speakers you reviewed after this) demoed during a hifi event last weekend. To be honest, this was one of the best demo's on the event (and you know how difficult it can be to get such a demo right at such events). I was floored and did not know yamaha had made so much great advances in 'audiophile land'. I have owned a home theater yamaha receiver some 15 years ago but this is a whole different ball game. And I agree with your conclusions (of this amp and of the speakers). Great review, great sound clips. Now you got me hooked for catching up on your reviews 🙂
I’ve been looking forward to this review - would’ve liked to get a sense of the MM phono stage that it does have. I’m trying to figure out whether it’s worth getting this, or hunting down an A-S2200 (maybe used-or a 1200) and a good streaming DAC instead. The YPAO kind of makes this a tougher call frankly, as my room (living room) doesn’t allow for me to pull my speakers out much further than they are.
I do love my phone preamp that I have now, but if an in-unit is better, I’m not against fewer connections and cables…
At any rate, great review and I’ve have been enjoying your channel!
looks interesting pls suggest what best speakers combination to suit this unit ??
In every sound clip, WPAO made the sound more phase coherent, not just tame the mid- and upper-bass bloom.
It also sharpens up the imaging somehow. Vocals go from vaguely somewhere near the center to sharp dead center in an uneven room.
Hi Ron, I'm pretty sure that you short-changed yourself in the YPAO part of the review. That part of the Yamaha goes all the way back to my RX-2600 (pre-2008). What's funny is they use the same mic. The magic in YPAO, and I did check this in the manual, is they pick points along the frequency spectrum and make adjustments. If you were to hook the output to a monitor, you'd see this. Then using their parametric eq software the individual points could be adjusted. At the time, I was using a set of Paradigm Studio 20s (v4) and YPAO completely transformed them from barely listenable to glorious. Great Product. Since then, in another location, I've opted for a Rotel A11 Tribute with a Paradigm PWLink with Anthem Room Correction software. The goal of the two programs is similar, but their execution is very different. What's cool about the Link is that Paradigm is still selling new-old-stock units for $200. These include Play-Fi (gapless), analog inputs/outputs, and a DAC with optical input/output. I think the pick of the litter for most people will be 800 series (around $1,200) when they release it in the US.
I have just got the Kef lf50 meta and I need to upgrade my amp Im Looking at this would you say this would pair well with my new speakers
or what would you think would be better for the same money plz reply I need advice thanks
Great review, Ron. Appreciate the honesty re the phono stage and sub out. Yamaha makes so many good products though, so they’re obviously not to be forgotten about. I’d likely use an external phono pre and DAC anyway. Thanks, Ron. ✌️🔊😊🎶
Part of the measurement problem is the eight foot wall distance. Yamaha does a lot of back wave management so just a few feet are all you need. My NS 5000's have all but put my subwoofer in retirement.
I have been using the RN800 for about 6 years now and it is by far the most is by far the most used amp I have. I’m super excited to see the new features and will get the 2000 if the 800 dies 🤣
Well guess you will have to wait another 24 years at least ;)
I’m getting back into viewing your reviews again. Any chance of getting an update on your current stable of components that you use in your reviews? You led me to one of my best pickups with the Holo May DAC. I’ve since added the Red and Bliss. I’m eternally grateful:).
Hey Ron. Great video thank you. I'd be interested in a follow up about how YPOW performs in a terrible sounding room. (like mine). Hard floor too much glass. As opposed to your custom built sound den. 🤞
That’s what a cymbal sounds like 😂 thanks for being so blunt!
Pretty sweet, but I’m gonna stick with my ultra-rare Yamaha C-1 regardless of what comes out. 😜
Great review, Ron.
The only thing missing a processor loop or a record monitor loop. Yes, EQs are not that popular as they were, but for guys like me with a large vinyl LP collection, with many in not the best condition and would benefit from a DBX range expander to give these recording a little more punch and remove some minor surface noise… WITHOUT spending $$$$ on a Sweet Vinyl’s Sugar Cube.
impressed with ypow implemented... in every clip I heard more delineation and detail, maybe a little less presence or less forward, so a bit deeper sounding and more refined. And that's on YT, maybe more pronounced in person.
It works fine with 4 ohm speakers, I want to pair it with Dynaudio contour 60i, please help me. Thank you in advance!
Well, after listening to your talk about how much you can get from a moving magnet (in your review of the LVB), it would still have been interesting to hear your assessment of the phono stage.
I really liked this review! Subscribed!!!
Could you please add your music info in the description? They sounded fantastic.
I already have an amplifier (Denon POA-5200) and wish they made this as Preamplifier.
Thank you for being on CZcams Ron!
Thank you!
Does anyone know who the artist/band is that sings the first sample song at 6:36?
Stereo sub outs are a must imo.
1) I think it's based off of the AS1200 rather than the AS 2200.
2) Dual subs are typically dual mono anyways so just use a Y adapter, that's what's typically inside anyway.
3) I think you'll find more people not using the phono stage at all rather than those whining about the lack of MC support and obv there is a work around anyway.
Is this a home theater amp? Why would someone add subwoofers to a music amp? Are there even any instruments that play at 30 or 20 Hz?
Subs play up to about 100Hz to give bass reinforcement to stand mounts and even small floorstanders. Though personally I feel money is better spend on better speakers in the first instance.@@TriAmpHiFi
@@TriAmpHiFi I think you have to move on about the subs and music. Seriously, was watching the Beastie Boys 'documentary' and the music deffo got below 30 hz, and with authority as well. My subs hit
@@TriAmpHiFisubwoofers ar the way to go for an best possible frequency response. That has nothing to do with Hifi or Home Theatre. There is a reason why Home Theatre Guys use Single or Double Bass Arrays. For a flat frequency Response in the room wich you cant get with single floorstanders. And you dont do a crossover at 30or40 Hz, 100-130 are normally + DSP, Time & Phase Alignment and of course final Measurements
@@Roof_Pizza What instrument ? What was the musical instrument the Beastie Boys played at
Totally agree!! Lacking MC is a ball dropped for sure. And in 2023 no dual sub out at 4K.. wow!! GREAT REVIEW!! Thank you. Cheers and happy Sunday. Still, I’ll remain a huge Yamaha fan. ❤❤❤
Yeah I really couldn’t let the lack of MC and loading options slip by. That just seemed like an oversight.
I do believe that a splitter cable would solve the sub problem. I’d rather see dual independent (stereo) sub outputs, but that a high bar indeed and rarely seen anywhere.
Personally I would not run subs at all and put all that extra money on a decent sub (expensive) into better floorstanders that play low. So for me it's not a dealbecker and also I would not be running a record player but if i was into that tiny tiny niche I'd get a pre amp. @@billd9667
I Love EQs more so fo the occasional Lets say not so great source material, not for Daily Use! Also Love the Looks of vintage EQs with my Vintage/ Modern mix of equipment. Vintage SX1280 Pioneer and mix of newer tech to feed the monster Pioneer, Love it
I wish I had seen this before getting my A8A. But, I really don't have any problem with the A8A. I really like the sound with the speakers that I have connected to it (stereo only, for now.) Also, in your link, I noticed a customer return on one of these . That raises a question of, why the return? BTW, I never used ypoa, I just moved the speakers, which is much easier with stereo, of course. And, MusicCast has worked very well, with Qobuz, for me as well.
Thanks!
Because one sub is the way to go in med to small rooms and in a big room you want one cluster of subs. Only outdoors with a wide distance between subs do you go for a corrected output and multiple sub clusters.
Would love to see your review on Anthems STR, it was great to see your room correction review backed up by measurements.
Noted!
Sounds great however one thing I have found to be required for my audio system is Yamaha front effect speakers. A dramatic improvement for music
i bought one of these for a second system and i think its great! not perfect, but what is? got a good discount on it. can play music in two different rooms (two sets of speaker outputs) plays radio streams from around the world something tunein wont do if your in the UK. FM tuner which is very good, i like it a lot.
My Yamaha s801 also has only one sub out and no moving coil magnet option in the phono preamp. Since they also don't include them in this much more expensive amp, I guess they have some sort of research that says they are not overly valued by the demographic they are after. I can definitely see that with the missing moving coil option as many people with very expensive moving coil cartridges will probably be using their own separate phono preamp. But the one sub out is definitely a limitation.
Receivers with HDMI ARC or eARC inputs are necessary for TV, since TVs no longer have RCA outputs. Good luck finding these inputs on audiophile preamps/integrated amps.
Hi Mate, could You try test Tidal Connect? I try played music with iPad with Tidal aplication and files are only 44.1 16 bits :) Normal tidal connect works with higer quality.
Thanks Ron, wise choice from Yamaha to refine the top end in a product aimed mostly at digital playback. Only one sub output - is it aimed at the Europen market? (We don't have the space man🛰🛰🛰
I'm still waiting for the Schiit Tyr review. And now Urd Unison to Unison transport and DDC.
Strange - no mention of the loudspeakers in use, as you usually do. Also did use a subwoofer and measurement to see how YPAO integrates the whole speaker side of the equation. How is the new listening room going?
NS2000A were the speakers used in this review and will be talked about in the next video. Rooms coming together nicely.
YPAO is a good electronic room correction system, but it DOES have its limits. If your room is highly reflective or significantly asymmetrical (side to side or front to back), YPAO's limits become very quickly audible. Give YPAO a hand by installing absorbers, diffusers, and/or bass traps, and THEN your YPAO-enabled electronics will sound a LOT better.
I really dislike the wedge shaped EQ knobs. They look fine at 12 o’clock, but anything else really throws off the clean aesthetic of the unit. It would be nice to have the smaller sound knobs and a 5 band EQ.
On the plus side, we can see the tone and loudness adjustments from a distance.
Now that’s what’s up!! 🎉🎉
Great review. The audio clips sounds good as well. For me however, that distinct Yamaha house sound isn't for me.
Too flat?
@@patrikbjorling4391 To my ears, V shaped with shrill top end - artificially increasing the soundstage. But, the audio clip was pretty good from this one.
If you like the room correction, you could try once the lyngdorf tdai 3400. It might surprise you over the Yamaha.
Hello !
Does it pair well with the Dynaudio Contour 60i, please answer me. you help me a lot.
No idea, I have never spent time with that speaker.
THANKS RON 🤗👍😎💚💚💚
That was just the best intro ever 😀
Thanks!
So what’s the better piece of equipment? This Yamaha R-N2000A or the Rotel 5000 ?
Nice I think the soundstage/ separation and musical presentation are superior to the RN 1000 A. At $3200 would you say this amp is a no brainer? Or another integrated/external streamer maybe?
Hi Ron, I had YPAO on a cheap stereo receiver from Yamaha my problem was it took too much base (too flat). Dirac allows me to do changes, I have base +6db. So with YPAO will be nice to have preset before calibration for example Flat, Jazz, Rock , Pop and DSP will create the right curve so user can choose best one for him, for his music and his system.
Thanks for sharing
The tone controls do still work with YPAO engaged, if that’s ok
Next gen YPAO.
"YAMAHA! WE HAVE BEEN FRIENDS!" I agree with capability! all else seems to be quite good.
Ron E Day ??? Did the Audio God's bless this amp ? Hdmi arc hell yeah .
me new audiolab 7000a has that also with ESS 9038 - its good seeing Recievers with this built in ARC to the dac lol 👍 anything more than pre- amp/amp is a receiver ! But receiver has such a bad name in audiophile community vs Integrated ! Makes no since when my (receiver) the Sansui G8000 will Smash most integrated Amps under $6k with body weight thanks Ron
Well , about the subwoofer output. It can be easily solved with using a y adapter in my opinion
what's the difference between the RN 2000 and the 1000. only the power ore more then this?
Lots of difference Audioholics has some videos on the differences
Everything's fine but☝🏻 I have one question. Triangle Genèsse Lyrr speakers - 140Watt/8 Ohm/92 db. RN-2000A has 120Watt 8 ohms, can this amplifier handle it?
I pair my A-S2200 with the eversolo DMP-a6 streaming device and JBL L100 classics --- would the N-S2000A be an upgrade ?
No, the he N-S2000A is not an upgrade… the A-S1200, 2200 and the 3000 is the flagship
You're perfectly neutral on having EQ control in the system - I see what you did there! 🙂
Haha!
Loved watching the vu meters during the measurements 😂
Glad you enjoyed!
YpAO off and the best way to go is tu keep such recivers as neutral as possible and with more usage of only bass treble and the volume.
Awesome review, Ron!
My man!
@cheapaudioman I’d welcome your take on this one with a cup of coffee in hand as well!
$4K? No moving coil? One subout? Wakama!!
Quick Comment, you can get these amps for far less money because of the short comings you point out as Open Box specials from the Dealers, just something I have noticed and that's on almost all of the high end models
I’m like the retro design.
Hang on... It's only rated driving speakers at 6 ohm! and above. At $ 4000 you expect something better.
It’s rated for 6 ohm minimum in Asia only. It’s 4 ohm anywhere else. I run two pairs of 6 ohm speakers simultaneously sometimes and it’s stable at 80ish dB.
@@billd9667weird. Is it a different circuit design in Asia?
@@markrosado8 Same amp. I have no idea why they are rated differently in Asia
Can do 4 ohms at 145w pc.
@@billd9667never run 2 pairs of 6 ohm loudspeakers. It Will play, but the temperature Goes to high What will schorten the lifetime of your amp. Even amps of 20.000 dollars can’t drive that for 20 years. Its written at the back of every amp.
maybe a pair of stereo hi level rel subs and a 3rd sub on the sub out would get it done
I only listened to the first couple of your sound samples -- but I thought it sounded better without WPAO. I own this receiver, which I bought only because I wanted an amp with bass/treble controls, and I've never even tried WPAO, or any of the streaming stuff. So I spent a lot extra just to get those bass/treble controls. I'm satisfied with the sound, which is detailed and refined, but at times I have thought it could be more full-bodied, or weightier in the bass. The internal DAC is excellent. I would recommend however using a good after-market power cable (like the Furutech DPS-4.1, which I use, or maybe the cheaper Kimber Ascent PK-10) to give as much body to the sound as possible.
As an audiophile, I think $4k for this unit sounds like it’s too much. Should be $1k to $2k.
Who’s we? At that price I’ts not for the general audience but a specific one.
It seem to be just AV receiver downgraded to 2 channels. Good AV receiver- maybe aventage series?
The only amp we need is the one we are using! Nuff said!
Hmm, now it should be compared to Denon PMA-A110 😎
Nice just when i think oh that would be nice to have I see the price and have to move on. Those things can be manufactured for so much less, at least below less than half the cost. Anyway I can't afford prices like that, disappointing but they have to make a living. Don't blame them.
Seems like a great step forward for Yamaha.
It is!
yeah, but how does it measure?
The only amp i ever need is my Hegel h390 wont need to upgrade for many years a head
Hey! Ron…Do another Dynavector cartridges review…..Please!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
wow ! it has a toroidal transformer, that's amazing ! 😂
While I agree with how silly it is to even mention that - not every amp these days come with a toroidal transformer.
Really? Are you familiar with Yamaha? They typically do not, ever, use a toroidal. It's noteworthy here.
Toroidal and EI transformers each have their own plus and minuses... Their quality is what matters most... There are many Uber high end amps with EI transformers... Some cheap yamaha pro-grade amps uses toroidal and some higher end home audio amps like A-S2100 use EI... Go figure....
Finally! A question.
Look at that beard trim! No more Grizzly Audioguy.
where is the amp?... pics and information from the web 😢
Awe man, did Google finally kick the bucket? I knew search engines were a dumb idea but no one ever listens to me.
Do they do one without all that dac/ streaming nonsense, all I want is something to replace my still working 1997 technics su -700 mk111 which is still in mint condition, ie a really good phono stage , tape , and 2 or 3 aux and 4 speaker inputs . As I only play lps.
Look at the Yamaha S1200 and S2200. Or for a cheaper model the 801
i bet you'll get your moving coil and another sub out on r-n3000a🤣
May I ask why reviewers always mention the type of transformer it has? Is an old style traditional transformer bad? Are the toroidal transformer superior? Or is it just that reviewers like to show off how they know what one is? Honestly.
You never showed the back of the unit?
I hate that they got rid of tone controls some songs have to much tremble etc.
This amp has tone controls. I talk about it quite a bit in the video.
@Moonplant432 that's all you need it's a beautiful piece. I just bought an avr and a tube hybrid and a vintage receiver so I can't really justify buying that but I still want it
My SANSUI AU 717 would slap that amp up (ALL NIGHT) light work
Well thats a deal breaker. All analogue people just turned this off as im doing..Now!
I wish it has no black bar at the bottom :(
just checked out the price, not sure i even want to watch the rest of the video lol
Luxman 505
This looks and smells like a class D amp, so I'm really struggling to understand why Yamaha is charging around $2k more than NAD are for their 3050 integrated...that $2k saving is a LOT of speaker cash.
It’s not class D
Only one subwoofer out put … O Yamaha why
No playlist for the beautiful music … O Ron why
Love ya work , long time Yamaha HiFi , acoustic guitar , motor bike and outbound fan
Ron when is that TYR review coming?
Probably next week.
