Written Review: www.stevehuffphoto.com/2023/1...
In today's video I review the Yamaha R-N2000a Receiver. This one has a streamer, a DAC and a class AB power amp that puts out 90 WPC into 8ohms and 145 into 4 ohms. It has a built in Phono stage and even FM radio built in as well!
The Yamaha has been with me for six months now as I took my sweet time, making sure I really loved it as much as I thought before making this video. Overall I have bonded with this amp and yes, I bought it with my own money . This was not a free review unit ; )
I explain all about the Yamaha integrated amp here and talk about why I love it so much. I test it with several speakers as well from $1200 to $12000. It can scale pretty well and sounds glorious with my OGY and BOB units.
BTW the MM Phono Stage here is also quite nice! There is nothing here NOT to LOVE.
Enjoy!

Great review with nice comparisons, thanks! Looking forward to the 3200 review.
Be patient I purchased the silver R-N2000A from Amazon (US) in November 2023 for $2,499.95 USD. It is fantastic at that price.
And their current line up of speakers are exceptional too. Try to hear the NS-3000 standmounts if you ever have the chance. You would absolutely love 'em🎶
It always blows my mind when some audiophiles turn up their nose on Yamaha.
tons of music they listen to was made on Yamaha gear, too
Great review, love Yamaha as well. How would you describe the a-s3200 sound compared to this? Does it have that same warmth in the vocal region as you described for them this integrated?
Thank you for the great review, I wish it had an CLR’s
Damn I was under the impression the n2000a sounded like the a1200, great long term review thank you.
Do you set bass/treble at '0' or keep it like this because it looks nice while filming?
I was a Yamaha dealer for many years and i found them to be a great company. They didn’t use any off the shelf parts, every part was built in house(may be different now). I was told long ago that Yamaha even grew the trees that provide the wood for their guitars and pianos.
I’ve had and listened to multiple Yamaha receivers and integrated’s overs the years from 1970’s to present as-701 running my Zu’s now best midfi for mass production for the price. Very crisp and clean . Prefer my vintage sansui stuff a little warmer but Yamaha is a close 2nd without spending major bucks with my mid 60’S ears why spend more when I can’t hear the difference . Thanks for another great review .
Thanks
I am a fan favorite of yamaha aventage receivers, i like the sound over other receivers in the same price category!!
How is the phono stage in the R-N2000A? I have the Yamaha A-S1100 and it shares the same excellent phono stage as the 2200 and 3200. But I see there is no MC capability on the 2000. I wonder if they went with a cheaper or simplified board.
Keen to hear where your Luxman and Pass Labs experiences are sonically in comparison to both 2000 and 3200.
It’s a a-s1200 with arc, digital inputs and streaming capabilities. That’s the sound description
We have a A-S3200 and it’s just great. It took quite a while to open up but after while it just relaxes and keeps the detail but smooths out without losing detail. Feed it a really nice source via XLR and it sounds high end to my ears, but not cold like some high end. Obviously speakers matter!
yep. I have the AS-1200 and it opened up. In fact looking at the back of this amp and not seeing XLR I think it is based on the AS-1200 with the addition of digital goodies.
The 3200 and 2000 have a high end sound but it’s musical and beautiful. Touch of warmth, better bass than 98% of integrateds I’ve tried and extended yet smooth highs. Both have this sound though the 3200 is a bit more refined and sounds a bit larger as well. I’ll have a video soon with the 3200 and 2000 side by side. :)
@@HiFiHuff I am wondering how the AS Yamaha's compare to their Japanese counterparts, Luxman and Accuphase....
Greetings from Callands, Virginia. I enjoyed your assessment of the Yamaha N2000 and I would love to have one for my JVC DD-7 cassette deck and a future turntable. I currently have a Yamaha Aventage A760 from 2016 that's going strong. I would love to see something new from Yamaha because no one adds tape loops to AVRs. Thank you for your assessment.
Love my A-1060
I've been R-N2000A owner for near 4 months. Currently experimenting with using it's DAC and preamp for feeding a tube amp as a serious listening mode for digital music. Any thoughts on the matter?
Whats it like verses the Hegel H190?
Room correction is a very vague descriptor. They really vary in what they can do and how well they do it, sonicalky, esp.
I just bought the Yamaha A-S801 to pair with my Paradigm studio 100 v2s. It’s coming Monday. This will be my third Yamaha since the 1970’s. I have had great luck with Yamaha. Hopefully this one lasts as long as the last two and sounds even better
The A-S801 is excellent.
@@ChicagoRob2 That’s what I hear. I get mine tomorrow. I can’t wait. You love yours?
@@bigmacfullerton7870 Yes, it’s a dynamite integrated.
Funny how every one of your reviews, it’s your favourite. This one stays!
By the whay that’s what I tell myself time and time again with new gear 😂
I can’t imagine any reviewer using an amp for 6 months😂 😂
Do you think the rn 2000 could power up a pair of vandersteen 2cis
How would it work w Buchardt Anniversary 10?
I just picked one up "Used like new" from Amazon for $2350. From what you said in your review and the other reviews I've seen I couldn't pass it up at that price. Now the decision is what speakers I want to pair with it. I'm down to either Wharfdale 85th anniversary Linton or Klipsch Heresy. Two speakers with completely different sounds but I have heard both and really like both. I'm leaning Klipsch because in your review you mention the Yamaha has a slightly warm sound. I'm thinking the brighter sounding Klipsch speakers may match up well with an amp a little on the warmer side. Any advice would be welcome. Great review! Subbed.
Go lintons. As1100 here and stacked lintons. I don't think the amp is warm just not full monitor neutral. Still with klipsch horns might be a bit much?
The Yamaha R-N2000A is great amplifier I went for. Also listened to below amplifiers before making final decision.
Sugden A21SE
Musical Fidelity M6si
Rega Aethos
NAD C399
Naim Supernait 3
Hi..How is it when compared to SugdenA21SE
You are my favorite reviewer. You review what i dream of listening to someday.
So it’s not the music, it’s the amp?
@@PetraKann It's both, clown, that's why we're here.
@PetraKann i can listen to any music i want. That's obviously not the case with amps.
Isn’t this actually considered a receiver vs. an integrated amp since it includes an FM tuner?
Yes, yamaha calls it a receiver
Have you reviewed the LINN streamers? You mention you can’t seem to better the Rose. I’m not sure about the price comparisons. But in the UK the LINN streamer products are reported to be the best in their category by UK and also other European countries press.
Thank you for another great review. Quick question- Closer Acoustics BOB vs REL S510?
❤ Yamaha
haven't heard any YAMAHA amplifier thats sounds better than my two 90's two AVI S2000MI integrated amplifiers used as two mono amps for each speaker . The AVI's are detailed and transparent , have resolution , are colourless , are still smooth but still dynamic and exciting . They pull out more detail from any recordings that no YAMAHA amplifier ever could , fact .
Because this is effectively an AS1200 with a streamer. I've paired the AS1200 with a wiim Pro plus for an even cheaper package. You don't even really another controller because you end up using your phone for the WiiM.
That analogy of swimming in a sea of music really resonates.
I own the Yamaha A-S1200 that I also love, apparently the amp section on the R-N2000a is very similar.
I think it has to do with the toroidal transformer it's specifically marketed on n2000a page
Yeah , it’s a beauty.
It might be worth to try it wit my Tannoy G. H. Memory?
Nope
I've been very happy with the RN 803
It’s a great piece for sure. I do miss mine.
If you are not into SE Class A as the Sugden A21 or Lux L550 AX2 or SE Class A tube amps (2a3 300B KT150) then this is a nice all in one aside the Unity Atom or the new Arcam A series (Class G) or Aegir or AAcento or AApuccini or Accuphase or Unison Primo etc. (but they are seperates systems) and at least much better than the terrible Hegel amp 🤔
Oh the Hegel yes very Brrr 😬😬
Or the Kinky Brrr very Brrr 😬😬
Seperates as an Unison Unico or Vincent or Sugden Class A amp and even the Aegir are much much nicer 🤔
6:20 “it’s a little warm”
8:27 “it’s not warm”
So what is it?
😂😂😂
An all in one component should be tested as it’s intended. Using an external streamer provides for an incomplete review. Helpful but incomplete.
Always a critic
Well then it should also be reviewed with your own speakers to be truly meaningful and that should be in your room but C of course none of these online reviews can only ever be a guide and you will need to do your own listening
my only downside to trying this amp is the lack of phono cartridge choice, it only offers MM
yeah >90% of phone users only use MM
My dream amp but being disabled and on a VERY fixed budget, that's never going to happen.
Should have tested the integrated streamer as well. Likely how most people will use this all-in-one.
If memory serves I recall your saying you had a Yamaha integrated and it crapped out on you very shortly after purchase; it was not a judgment you were reporting facts; now Yamaha is getting so much love; their top of the line integrated is overpriced of course value is subjective; if you read German Stereoplay Rang und Namen they rank purely on sound and then a score for value and the result is middling; mid pack of all the integrated amplifiers out there with or without streaming capabilities.
❤
I think it has lots of inputs but let's not jump de gun on hype. The USB's are very old format, there is no I2S, ABS/EBU and there actually is no BT.
Yes, it's a receiver, the integrated amp that bests it is the S2200, basically a lower end version of the S2200.
It is based on A-S1200 with 72k filter capacitance. A-S2200 has 88k (22k mFx4). The feet isolation are like 2200 though. Peace ✌️
It has BT, just not 2-way. It can only accept input, but not power headphones.
USB may be old, but it works and beats RCA buy a damned sight
The Yamaha lacks quite a few features, but has quite a few. Design for this amp probably began 5 years ago. A lot has changed since then
I have a black and a silver a-s1200 by both the meters are not aligned.
I thought the same, but it turns out that it was an illusion. You can’t see both meters at the same time, really. Your eyes have to shift focus minutely and you really can’t catch it fast enough. Even if they are off, they can be calibrated. Also, consider your source.
@@billd9667 You’re correct, I have a Yamaha CA-1010 Integrated vintage 1977 with dual meters, and they always look slightly misaligned but just an illusion.
One thing you could do is to download a tone generator for your phone and send a signal to the receiver via Bluetooth to check the meters.
But how's the headphone jack?
acceptable, I would say, if wife want to take a nape. But I wouldn't recommend it as the main listening experience of this amp.
Headphone jack doesn’t have enough power to drive power hungry headphones. If that’s what you are asking for. I had to buy external headphone amp to drive my Hifiman Arya Organics and Meze 109 Pro.
@@nalbor6919 yeah, the headphones jack output is just there in case...
As far as I'm concerned, for a few bucks more, I'd have a Daniel Hertz system. Done!
The only reason i am not buying is the size of that beast....i just don't have the space for it. I do have spece for rn1000 but this is not anywhere near the 2000 in terms of build...
Now you know...🍺👍🔊🔈... Yamaha.... ! Saving up for the Yamaha C-5000 preamplifier and the YAMAHA M-5000 amplifier.... !
Wow ❤
I have this amp, beautiful indeed. My only problem is that I can't manage having access of the streaming services like kobuzz directly in muscats. I mostly use it directly from my DNLA serveur, But I also would like to access to my streaming services, like it suppose to do. :(
If you can get the stream from Qobuzz without using the app on your phone, it’s direct from MusicCast. It’s just clunky, but only slightly worse than BluOS. I have both and they both need work. At least BluOS does gapless. The Yamaha doesn’t.
@@billd9667 yet I can't get is even if I switch on the streaming service on musiccas...t frustrating!
You Should really check out the Yamaha AS3200 - With a world class DAC
dont be fooled by this misinformation from rmartin1679 ...
The A-S3200 is a textbook example of a traditional large, full-feature integrated from the land of the rising sun. Unlike so many of its price rivals, it’s totally devoid of streaming or even world class DAC functionality. NO DAC, or, without a world class DAC!!
I am using a Chord TT2 with an M SCALER and an A-S3200 and I'm finally done looking for anything else.
There is also the option for a different/excellent sound using the TT2 as a Pre-Amp and the 3200 as strictly a Power Amp.
@@TrueAudio I think all rmartin was suggesting is listen to the AS3200 along with a world class dac. which is what someone would do with a 3000 series Yamaha amp.
It’s still expensive
When you have no where else to go...
You just touched upon why I don’t own any contemporary surface-mount solid-state amplifiers or preamplifiers:
Once they fail, outside of warranty, you are most usually left with little more than a very expensive door stopper.
This is true for essentially all such equipment, regardless of price point. These are simply not heirloom devices,
Granted, DACs, streamers CD Pplaers and other digital source components which use surface-mount PCB construction and microprocessors are similarly ephemeral, but this is largely unavoidable.
I do accept the fact that DACs, digital players, streamers etc are ultimately temporary recyclables and unlikely to be lifetime purchases, but I choose to go with repairable preamps and power amplifiers which use discrete components and which do not utilize surface-mount technology nor microprocessors.
Fortunately, computer-free new-production preamplifiers and power amplifiers can still be purchased which utilize discrete devices and through-hole solid-state PCB construction or point-to-point wiring such as vacuum tube equipment.
Nothing is truly discrete anymore. You can only try minimize the pain with separates
So people can stream Spotify on this amp...LOL
No YAMAHA sounds better than a pair of pro active ATC SCM ASL monitors either .
Its 3 times the price of 1000...
But it has VU meters... And a completely different build philosophy, but hey. VU METERS!!!!
6 months to post a review, to be sure about your thoughts , so is that what we can expect with all future reviews, as premise stands for all equipment? Fishy smell anyone?
I'm finally done with you. You offer nothing but gushing hyperbole at every turn. Super sus and grifty
Doubt youll find one better than that Rose.
find one what ?
@@TrueAudio His 130 Rose streamer.
Please stop calling this 'an amplifier'. It's an integrated amp. Don't adopt the European terms. We buy pre-amps, amps, and integrateds. If this is 'an amplifier', then what is a stand alone amp?
Eh?
It's actually a receiver :)
US guys... ! 🤭
People using American words / clothes / food / music all over the world is normal.
But using the word "Amplifier" and not "integrated amp" is a scandal !
What arrogance !
Do not buy it!!!
🤔
If you have a reason to exclaim it, then explain it.
? Care to provide more input?
jealous!
Language barrier. Probably works for Accuphase
Great review. Did you try the Yamaha with the Dynaudio Special Forty's and if you did were they a great pairing?
