  • I show an overview of the autofocus settings on the Nikon Z6 and Z7 cameras. My goal in this video is to help you understand what the differences are between AF-C, AF-S, AF-F and the different area modes.

Great job Mike. Loving my new Z7. Thanks for the update. Have you experienced any tracking issues with a longer lens like tghe 200-500 with the Z7

Grest job, i agree with you about using manual focus on video mode. But I have to say the focus gear on the lense is very strange. I don’t think is intuitive . It’s sort of dragging, or responding slowly to the command given in video mode. Is that something you experienced ? Or am I doing something wrong?

for one my friend you're wrong...NOT most videographers use manual focus...don't know where you've got that from but it is not true. A lot of people say they do but they only saying that to show that they are some kind of masters and apparently they don't need auto focus where in fact most would use auto focus. so don't believe everything you hear around.

I'm a pro video guy. I hire pro video guys. We all use manual focus for our production shoots. I've used AF in special cases, but it just isn't quite there yet.

@@MikeHagen I am pro video guy and i hire pro video guys as well and I do pro videos my self....manual focus is BAKED BEANS pardon my language since i don't want to use other words....yes they are some that use manual but most people use auto focus especially when they have the right camera that can do that let's say Canon... If you use a 1000 year old camera yes maybe you have to use manual focus but why would you use manual when the camera does everything for you and does it right. Get your hands on a Canon with their dual focus and you will be free of bad habits .

AF works well when you have a single subject with a simple background. However, AF can't anticipate what you want when you have multiple subjects/actors and you need to select which one is in focus. Also, AF-F modes are always hunting. That means that the video is constantly changing (breathing). In some cases, you'll have the forward/backward movement of the camera coupled with the focus breathing of the lens and it is uncomfortable for the viewer.

@@MikeHagen I wasn't talking about making Hollywood films here where everything is very controlled to every single detail. i was talking about the average consumer that makes videos for CZcams or landscape videos or weddings or even music videos...Autofocus works just fine. I never used manual focus and never will since with that hand I can do better things like holding the camera better or anything else. lately I use nikon Z6 and never let me down doing weddings or landscape videos and if you want to go even better you can use any Canon dslr with dual focus and it will focus on anyone anywhere at a press of a button. Just an example...all this with autofocus an i am perfectly fine with it .czcams.com/video/tV6FlC64y58/video.html...This is make with /nikon Z6 and i am just fine with it.

@@andreiiasi Awesome. I think it is cool that the same camera works for both shooting styles.
