Trollstigen is a serpentine mountain road and pass in Rauma Municipality, Møre og Romsdal county, Norway.
It is part of Norwegian County Road 63 that connects the town of Åndalsnes in Rauma and the village of Valldal in Norddal Municipality. It is a popular tourist attraction due to its steep incline of 10% and eleven hairpin bends up a steep mountainside. During the top tourist season, about 2,500 vehicles pass daily. During the 2012 season, 161,421 vehicles traversed the route, compared to 155,230 vehicles during 2009.

You questioned why people would build at the end of fjords when the road up and down would so crazy. The villages did of course come a long time before any roads. Along the coast of Norway people relied on boats for almost all transport, and they also tended to settle on any flat bit of land where they could farm. Due to how the fjords were formed, there is usually a fair bit of flat land at the end of all fjords, and it tends to be quite nice farmland.
Centuries later, getting around on land became more important, and roads were built to the previously isolated villages along the coast. As a side note, all these villages that were cut off from each other due to the mountains is the reason why there are so many distinct dialects in Norway.
Really enjoy how humble the videos are. I was literally thinking, ‘how do you do those drive pasts’ and then saw you running across the video like it was 2 for 1 donuts at the end of the road. Brilliant. I’ve added this to the list.
My father roamed those areas in the 1960's, setting up hydro electric stations and such. His Cortina would need new springs at least once a year😅 Trollstigen is notorious for incinerating brakes on camper vans, often overloaded. And every spring, extensive repairs are carried out, rock slides and avalanches make their presence felt.

I felt like Danni when I drove over the Stelio Pass in Italy. Scary but absolutely awesome. These passes are what keeps me wanting to drive the mountains of Europe especially the Alps. After this vid I will put Norway on the list.
Sorry to be the nerd spamming your comment section now, but Trollstigen was not built from scratch in the 20ies and 30ies. It was a path people walked and then people and horses and so on for centuries. That explains the hairpins, it needed to be flat enough for people and horses to walk it. A hundred years ago it was made a driving road. Somewhere in that area there is a rock with the inscription 'King Haakon completed this road in 1936. Olaf the Saint walked it in 1028'.

I'm enjoying watching your Norway series while touring in our own GC 600 around the South Island of New Zealand. Yesterday we traversed Takaka 'Hill', west of Nelson, which is New Zealand's version of Trollstigen. We're almost living in parallel universes, although the 'Hill' was two-lane all the way.

Looks good fun. Try kardnott pass in the lakes as a comparison. I'd say it's worse but it's hard to say on video. It's got 33% gradient and the same 180 hairpins except they are on 30% gradient. It's also badly surfaced. And single track with sheer drops. You'd probably enjoy it

We are going to camper van NZ at
Easter and this will be our first time. We are keen to tour in relative luxury (loo/shower) and it has been great to learn that the VW Grand Cali is not the answer - surprisingly.
Any recommendations - we would like off grid capabilities and a 4 wheel drive capability.

Not easy in a right hand drive van. I did this road in 2016 on my motorcycle, on the way to nordkapp. Cheers

It should be. It’s a great road.
We do sometimes but they are just not as nice as a good long lens on the camera. Both have limitations though and that day we recorded this the wind was insane and it was raining heavy on and off so drone was a no go really. I had planned to use the drone to capture us heading all the way down originally

We went in September into October and done 17 days in total but that included 4 days to get to and from Norway. So 13 days in Norway itself.

Trollstigen is very fare from the most dangerous road in Norway. There are hundreds that are more dangerous. They are just not that well known.
It’s listed on a lot of websites as that but I agree it’s not dangerous although if it was open over the winter I bet it would be very dangerous. I just used the websites as a reason to make the title a little more dramatic.
@@ChrisSloanes In the winter it is covered by meters of snow. 🙂
Even with a snowmobile it would be extremely dangerous since the step hills often have large avalanches. When they opened the road last summer they had to lift up several of the large stones along the road because they was swept away by an avalanche.
It is not a dangerous road and far from Norway's most dangerous road. It is just a road tourists fear when driving it.

Great video Chris. We did the Norway road trip in 2014 in slightly different vehicles. This is absolutely not Norways most dangerous road..... there are much more dangerous roads in Norway.
