Have you ever had a snare that just has way too much kick and hi-hat bleeding in, and then you spent hours messing around with the gates and all kinds of other things, but still didn't get the results you were hoping for? Well, then this is the trick for you!
This trick actually comes from Manny Nieto, who is a very well-known Los Angeles producer, engineer, and mixer!
While this trick can be used on all kinds of drums, today we will be using it on the snare and toms. The best part about this trick is you don't need any kind of fancy plugin, or anything else. All you need is a compressor, which you should already have right in your DAW!
In the track I applied this trick on, there was tons of cymbal bleed in my snare, and I am going to use this trick to remove that. To start, I am going to take the snare top, and duplicate it - this includes the audio file, any plugins that have been added to it, and everything else! Then, I am going to reverse the polarity. This nulls out the two tracks, so we actually have no snare now.
Next, I am going to grab my compressor. I am going to take just the duplicated snare, and compress it really aggressively. After doing that, I will put the two snares together. I have now created a gate from a compressor, and there is virtually no bleed now and my snare sounds so much better!
I have also used this to eliminate bleed in my toms, and you can use it on all kinds of drums as well!

What are your favorite tricks for eliminating mic bleed?
IZotope’s Rx7
I've stopped stabbing them and they bleed a lot less.
ReaFIR from reaper is great and available as seperate and free plugin, you can use it as FFT gate with per band threshold
Put a gate on the track and move the parameters to have the best result. It's impossible to remove the background noise completely, I think??
avoiding real drum sets and micing completely.
i´m a hardcore drummachine fanatic since the early 80ies
I was just thinking -- you could try this same trick but with a multiband compressor. That way, you could use a shorter release for the high frequencies, and a longer release to let the lows ring out.
Yes, marvellous indeed!!
This is a trick I picked up from Beau Burchell, who used it with a high pass on the duplicate AFTER the compressor to single out the high end, so the low end could come through continuously. Best way I've ever come across to control hi-hat bleed in the snare mic. And in Studio One, you can use the splitter tool to do it all in one channel, no duplication required.
Great trick! I've been using this for a year or 2 and usually add another thing especially on toms: if you put a high pass filter after the compressor you can control exactly which frequencies get nulled when the compressor isn't hitting. Really great on toms because you can leave the low end decay untouched while cutting the cymbal bleed, but still have the transient be full spectrum from the compression. Definitely came in handy for some people who put their cymbals really low!
Damn, that's really smart.
Vida Boaz yeah, definitely not my idea though haha, don't remember where I picked that up from
Can you post a screenshot of what that EQ would look like?
@@boazboazboaz321 yes it is!
@@jarrodg09 Literally just a high pass. Then blend it to taste. You'll definitely hear the differences, and it's not an exact science.
Warren, this trick alone is worth my yearly PLAPA subscription! The guy who worked this one out is a genius.
It really helps to understand what’s happening here: you’re cancelling out everything that’s the same, which is everything if you make a like for like duplicate. As soon as you make a change to one of the tracks - either original or duplicate - it’s only the difference that comes through, hence why the compressed parts comes through.
Now that should all be obvious, but it’s worth keeping the fundamental concept in mind so you can try other little tricks to bring back just what you want, eg EQ, other effects etc.
It’s also worth noting that to blend some of the original track back in all you need to do is lower the fader of the duplicate track -rather than making a triplicate!
Yes! Great stuff! Thanks ever so much for sharing!
copied and pasted to my notes : )
Wow, what GREAT lighting! :)
Hahaha yes! Who could have helped that?
Huh?! What?! No way!, walked upstairs to my music room, tried it and I am completely mind blown. wow! Thnx Warren this is gonna help a ton!
I got halfway through this video and immediately tried this on snare top and bottom audio tracks and it made a huge difference! WOW.
Have been mixing acoustic drums for the first time in years. Just played with this on three tracks and it has totally transformed the mix! Sounds great.
That's amazing to hear!
Bleed can add size to the sound of a kit, but when it's an annoying sound like too much HH, oh yeah, this is perfect! Thanks for sharing!
Yes, used properly I agree 100%! Thanks ever so much for the great comment!
Absolutely
Ingenious! Thanks for sharing the tip, Warren!
Wow! Thank you for sharing. It's one of the things I love about this community. So many people sharing great ideas!
@warren I can not express the joy it gives me watching how excited you got sharing this tip. shout out to Manny Nieto and as always thank you so much for sharing this phenomenal trick of the trade...
Thrilled you enjoyed Joel ;)
I am amazed on how good this trick is, especially on snare and kick tracks. Stunning. Thank you!
Omg! Mind BLOWN! I've never seen that in 20+yrs! That's so ridiculously easy instead of remembering your sidechaining and ducking fuckeroo that you try and do to get rid of bleed on the snare! I'm always looking for things to do that! Really wanted the new Sonnix drum gate for that, but I refuse to pay more than $50 for a plugin! The prices are ridiculous and frankly you just don't NEED them 99% if the time.! And you just proved it! Thank you kind sir for actually showing great educational content! 👍🏻🙏👌👏🥁🎤🎛️🎚️🎼🎹🎻🎺🎙️🎸🎧🎵🎶🎼
thanks warren for sharing all these great tips! i have really learned a lot from the youtube videos. big up to you and your team!!
Great tip. Another cool trick with gates is to duplicate your snare track, put a gate on one track and engage the sidechain input in that gate. Send the signal from the duplicate snare track to the gates sidechain input and now nudge the audio on the duplicate snare track slightly forward to set the attack time on the gate. Sounds a lot more natural than most normal gate approaches which sound like they chop off the very beginning of the snare. Release time can be set as per normal on the gate itself.
A note, you don't want the audio from the duplicate track to be heard so that signal needs to be sent to the gate via a pre fader send, then pull that channels volume fader all the way down.
Wow, awesome technique. Thanks for sharing, Warren!
You have cured my headache! Brilliant tweak. It never crossed my tiny mind! Thank you so very much!
I love finding tricks like these that people will buy dedicated plugins for! Thanks Warren!
FANTASTIC tip, Warren! Thank you!!! Saved me a bit of a headache getting rid of a ticking hat on the snare channel without having to EQ it out... BUT - it also took away any ghost notes or little rolls on the snare. What I did to get around that was create an FX bus to exaggerate all the frequencies specific to the snare and cut what I really didn't want and then take the output of the FX bus and feed the side chain of the compressor on the phase-reversed snare track - worked like a charm!!!
As always, a goldmine of information! Thanks, Warren!
Tremendous trick! This is life changing!! Thanks for sharing.
Cheers!
It makes so much sense, but somehow I never thought of this. What a fantastic trick :)
Thanks ever so much! Glad this was really helpful!
Not only is Warren great at production, he reads minds. I was just having a similar discussion with my engineer/co-producer last night. Such a helpful video, as always. 🙏❤️
Thanks ever so much Jamie! You Rock my friend!
@@ProducelikeaproYou're welcome. 😊
That's fantastic Warren! Thank you Manny for sharing your compressor/gate tip!
Thrilled you enjoyed Charles! Warren explained it way better then I could have ;)
This is brilliant This saves me so much time and frustration most drum tracks I get are not recorded in the best conditions, and removing bleed with gates and edits is time consuming. I used this technique on one of the worst drum recordings I have ever heard, within ten minuets I had a very very good drum mix Thank you Warren, Thank you Manny. I learn some pretty cool tricks on this channel but, This is by far the best trick I didn't already know.
Fabulous - never ever thought of this before ! Great contribution Warren - thank you!!
Thanks for sharing that! What an awesome trick!
AMAZING TRICK Manny!!!! Thanks so much to the PLAP Community for sharing this :)
Thanks ever so much Gerald!

Best trick ever? My vote is yes. Thanks so much for this one!
Thanks ever so much!!
What slick technique, thanks for sharing Warren!
actually protools standard comes with very minimal plugins..so i faced lot of issues during mixing..but after watching your tricks i get rid off those challenging issues day by day..Thank you a lot sir..
Interesting as always man! Always grateful to learn something new here!
Flippin heck that is awesome. I am going to try this for sure! Thanks Warren.
That's a really clever trick. Simple AND educational. What more could we ask... lol! Thanks Warren!
Just tried it Warren. This is million dollar tip you dropped on us. Thanks!
The best tricks are always simple! Thanks!
Awesome! Will definitely have to try this, thanks Warren!
Amazing! You're the best Warren, thank you!
Incredible natural result! Thanks a lot!
Very cool! Thanks for the lesson.
Wow! That is truly an excellent result! Thanks so much Warren and thank you Manny. Going to try this right now!
Thrilled you enjoyed Dave ;)
Fascinating, thank you so much Warren, much appreciated !
As always priceless information! This may actually become a total game changer for me.
Up until now, I just cleaned up manually by dialing down in between or muting or sampling a snare of that kit and use a replacer to layer it, but of course you can hear that drastically in some songs. Thanks Warren!
Many thank's! Always so kind and welcoming. Calm and really wanna make u listen. Been mixing/ recording for nearly 10 years as a amateur... fortunately I'm finally advancing. Thanks to u and a few more... why? Analyzing songs and trying embrace my flaws and mistakes, and knowing what I'm doing wrong!
This trick is a keeper🤗🙃
Just know we are all in the same boat! Never a day goes by that I haven’t learned something new in the recording world. Even the super elite producers scratch their heads trying to make a song or track sound better. I
This one is really top-notch... I can see many more possibilities with this trick already
Thanks ever so much!
Very cool trick! Never think abou this kind of opposite phase processing! Thank you !
Mind blown! Great tip Warren!
That sounds much more organic than most gates I've used. Fantastic! Thanks for sharing Warren, kudos to Manny! ❤️
Thrilled you enjoyed BH ;)
This is really cool! Thanks a lot for sharing this pro tip 😊
Just finally got to watching this video! When you flipped the tracks and then added the comp, I was all like what shnizzle wizardry is this! Thanks, I was sitting here struggling with the gate.
What a wonderful technique! Thanks Warren :-D
Gotta Say... It’s been a minute since I found a new trick I will be using on CZcams in a loooong time. Thanks!
Brutal trick!! Immediately in my mixes. Thanx a lot!!
That's amazing!! This trick sounds marvelously well here!! Thanks! :)
I was going to ask about bleed in the live chat today. I cant believe this came out today. Just what I needed.
Amazing trick, Thx Nieto and Thx Warren
I'd adore your take on something like the Vulf Compressor (either for drums or a whole track), especially how Jack Stratton often uses it combined with a Glyn Johns method on drums.
Great video as always, I love phase reversal tricks.
Wow, that is an awesome tip! Thank you very much!
Absolutely love these tips.. who would have thunk it!!?? Thanks for the crazy deals on the Academy, just upgraded to a lifetime membership after a couple of years as a part timer! 🤩🎛🤣
Didn’t see that comming, I’m actually finishing mixing drums for my next single, I will definetely use this! Thank you
Once again, Much appreciated Warren
Wow. That really did just happen! I'm learning so much as a beginner. This channel ROCKS!
Thanks ever so much!! So glad to be able to help
I can't wait to try this out!
I'll definitely be using this!! Thank you!!
Best I've seen for cleaning up bleed!!
thank you awesome just tried it works fantastic thanks warren and Manny
Wow that’s so good haha crazy how creative some people get with experimenting. Never would’ve thought to try this
Thank you! Reduced my mix time process.
What an amazing technique, I’m going to put this into practice immediately! Thank you Manny, thank you Warren!!
Thrilled you enjoyed trick ;)
Ha! My buddy taught me this a few years ago in the old Muscle Shoals Sound 2 when I was producing a session with a drummer who hit too hard. My mind was blown! Thanks for reminding me :) I'll be doing this again
Amazing trick, will be using this on my next mix!
Wow, very cool! This is the audio equivalent of cutting the outside of a selection instead of the inside.
... what a simple a beautiful trick! Genius!
exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Very Nice!!! Can't wait to put this to use on drums tracks I'm working with now!! Thx!
Mindblown!! Holy crap, what a great trick!
This is such a great idea! Hindsight (20/20) it seems so obvious - but I'd never have thought of that in a thousand years.
Great trick ! Thanks Warren !
Wow!! Finally a trick that any DAW users can adopt. Thanks a ton!! 😍🙏
Thanks for showing that video, great trick indeed for a substitute gate.
Absolutely great trick!
You're a saint to share this to us! A marvelous thank you from Brasil!
Great! Amazing Trick, I never heard about before. Thx a lot. I already have an idea, where and when to use it.
This is legit insane. I'm going to try this on my close tom mics right away!
for whatever reason, watching your videos just makes my day! u r a cool dude!
Thanks ever so much!
The timing on this trick couldn't have been better. Was just trying to mix down a song where the drums had horrible bleed (way worse than what you showed) and it worked like a charm. Thank you!
Fantastic! Thanks ever so much Michael!
Great trick again!
I did the opposite, when the acoustic strings squealed during the chord changes like a piglet. :)
It took 3 tracks:
One had a steep band filter to select exactly the 5k where it could be detected, and then a gate, that was set up to only let through the noises. I printed this track. At the end I could edit out "false positives" i.e. attacks that were ruined.
The result went into the sidechain of a compressor. So, the acoustic guitar was ducked when these noises occurred, and I had lots of control about it, with the knobs of the compressor, and with editing or automating the aux track. This was the main track.
A third low-volume track with some EQ could gloss over some hickups, and made it sound more smooth.
In he end, it sounded very natural, and much improved.
This works really well. Just doing a mix where the hats get really intrusive on the chorus. Great drummer and snare sound, but the snare hat spill doesn't combine well with the overheads. I found that duplicating and flipping the polarity and tweaking the compressor works great on the chorus but I lose some of the snap and bite/punch from the snare in the verses, so have automated the mute on the duplicated snare so that it turns off on the verses but comes on the for the chorus and I boost the parallel drum buss a little on the chorus too. Works a treat. No more harsh hats and cymbals on the chorus and the verse still has the snap I was after! Thanks for another great tip 🙌🏻
Wowowow. Wish I could like this video more than once. Never in my life have I seen this before. I'm gonna try this today.
This is actually a REALLY dope trick!
Brilliant!!! What a great tool
Awesome trick… I saw this vid a while ago but totally forgot about this. Thanks Warren!!!
Thanks Tim!
You save my live once again...Lov u bro!!
I've just tried this trick on teaching videos my girlfriend is recording. Turns out, in her videos, she had a very annoying static high pitch noice coming out of the computer fan. I've used to use a gate and a low pass filter to get rid of it, but that would remove a bit of the treble of her voice. With this trick, I can leave the voice unaffected, thanks Warren !
Oooh Warren & Manny!! Thank you, thank you, thank you.🙏🏼
Thanks for checking in ;)
