  • The US, UK and EU have announced new sanctions on Russia, two years after its invasion of Ukraine.
The measures also marked a week since the death in custody of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
President Vladimir Putin has claimed European sanctions have done Russia no harm, saying: "We have growth, and they have decline."
The International Energy Agency says Russia is still exporting 8.3 million barrels of oil a day - having increased supplies to India and China.

Because there's no way around it. It's just giving oil companies like BP and Shell an excuse to hike up prices. The margin they put on per litre is practically double of what they put on prior to the war, that's why they're making record profits. But our government are the Tories, they'd rather give the rich an excuse to make more money than just go "fuck it, we can't do anything, so let's help our people" and just resume purchasing oil from Russia directly so that regular people can at least not suffer from oil companies' ridiculous margins.

Not if you understand economics. Looking at a few indicators can provide a false picture. The Russian economy is slowly being destroyed. Basically they are spending their savings and using monies meant for non-war purposes to build tanks etc. This will create long-term economic problems.

    • @user-hf2dr7sh4y
      @user-hf2dr7sh4y Před 3 měsíci

Surpassing expectations would actually mean Russia took over the majority of Ukraine in less than 2 days and then started considering invading Moldova. So no they're not surpassing expectations, but they are spending away 100ks of Russian lives and billions of dollars to prop up their trillion dollar economy, so in that way they sort of surpassed expectations (but not really because we all knew supreme leader Putin doesn't value the average Russians lives). Hope Xi is ready to help Putin last another year or 2 after Europe uses $300 billion in Russian assets to build Ukrainian wartime factories in Romania and Poland. Perhaps we could even employ the Chinese to do it since they're the best at building them in under a year and Evergrande (which builds 1 in 6 Chinese houses) just went bankrupt in a Hong Kong court.

Having thoroughly studied Russia's Central Banks releases the following is clear.
in 2023 and to date in 2024 Russia achieved 14 months of multi billion dollar deficits, following a multi billion dollar deficit in December 2022 (Source : Russia Central Bank data) leading to a 156 billion dollar reduction in revenue.
The deficits are a continual worsening trend caused by western sanctions decreasing Russia's revenues by 62% from oil and gas, which according to Russia Bank's data is over 156 billion dollars down on the same period in 2021/ 2022.
On top of this Russia's currency, the Ruble, has decreased in value by 52%, making it one of the 3 worst performing currencies in 2023, even after Russia's Bank doubled interest rate from 7.5% to 15% in 5 months at the end of 2023, in an attempt to stop it declining in value even further.
Russia has stopped fuel exports to prevent shortages, has food queues for the first time since Soviet times and spare parts availability for cars, planes, agricultural machinery, industry, etc has gone from 2 days to 18 months, if available at all.
Russia has been robbing its 'reserve funds' to pay for the economy, which means the growth may look good, but it's not from new revenues! You understand that differention, yes?
Lastly, Russians are freezing all across Russia due to heating and electrical power infrastructure failures due to poor maintenance.
These are easily researched facts and yet you will hear every day that Russia is doing well! why? because people believe Russian propaganda and don't understand statistics!
Let me give you an example.
Let's say Russia earned $100 and due to sanctions lost half (50%), the level of Russia's value at the start of the next year is now $50. in the next 12 months Russia achieves a growth of $10 giving them a total of $60.(which, if taken from the lower $50 starting point calculates as 20% growth). That for some and in particular the IMF forcasters, indicates a growth of 20%, rather than a deficit of 40% from the Original $100 starting point the previous year.
The bigger picture (wider the historical data spread) gives you the real picture, and not the snap shot taken that included the lower figures to support the narrative that Russia is doing OK.
Think about that for a while.

This is nonsense. Russia's goal was around 1.7%. They themselves were surprized by the high IMF prediction, and still held a lower prediction afterward.
GDP is a measure of the value of all goods and services produced in a country. A 3.6% growth means that Russia now produces 3.6% more stuff in terms of dollar value.
Lots of exports to Russia were banned. Lots of Western brands left Russia willingly. This left a big demand for those goods and services in Russia...this demand was filled by new local producers that sprang up in Russia during the first year (and they didnt have to worry about being outcompeted by western industries). This is why Russia now produces more goods and services (which requires the employment of people, increase demand for labor, which increases wages and salaries.
The other factor is the increase in value of certain goods and services. Attempting to block imports of oil and gas from one of the largest producers is going to increase the dollar value of these goods and services...because of market volatility.
Normally, when left alone, the market will settle into the most efficient trade routes, but if you stir that up, things become expensive.
E.g. here's a hypothetical, If Europe stops importing from Russia, and starts importing from Saudi and Qatar and bids a higher price to get it due to demand, Saudi and Qatar now have less available for it's current customers. Their current customers now have their supply disrupted and have a bigger demand for oil and gas, and when they search for supply they find that Russia just so happens to have additional supply available and are willing to pay more than usual due to circumstances.
All this caused the Russian Government to collect more tax revenue. Increased business activity, increased employment and salaries, increased value of exports that are directly taxed, etc. means more money in the coffers of a government (oil and gas exports have a large export tax slapped in those in Russia). Governments get revenue from tax (this obvious even to the most simple minded person).

So many Russians don't like Putin and that is why Naval y is dead. To send them a message. So no it is not Russia that people hate and many people in the west have admired Russia, including myself. Putin however is someone that does not value Russians lives and is willing to sacrifice 300k of Russians for a small peninsula, and even more stil for years to come. So even though Tucker Carlson admires him, the rest of the west does not.

EU Sanctions no one but itself. Economy sanctions against enemies is not a new strategy, but a rather old one with a new name. Surrounding the enemy during siege, preventing resources and reinforcements to get in were always a war strategy. On the other hand if anyone has ever saw a map about Russia, then there is no question about that surrounding it or preventing resources to come and go by applying sanctions are never was going to work. Absolute nonsense and here's why i say so.
Having thoroughly studied Russia's Central Banks releases thie following is clear.
in 2023 and to date in 2024 Russia achieved 14 months of multi billion dollar deficits, following a multi billion dollar deficit in December 2022 (Source : Russia Central Bank data) leading to a 156 billion dollar reduction in revenue.

As Russian who lives in Russia I can definitely say that we're more than fine these days and truly independent. We have our own payment system and have no need for VISA or MC. We have a full house of resources, all kinds, while USA and EU is still dependent on some of our resources. Shelves are full of groceries, all other shops and markets are full of everything you need. Sanctions not only "not working", but actually hurting USA and EU more than us. Guys, come on... a country that is trying to control the world by putting sanctions on everything is sees will eventually go under. That worked foe some time when China wasn't that strong, but USSR was strong. Now both Russia and China are strong. And Iran, and even North Korea, which is sending shells to Russia and USA can't do much about. USA and EU (read NATO) is weaker than ever. The world will eventually abandon the use of dollar like it was couple of decades ago and the debt of USA will play its destroying game towards the owner of that debt.

Remember that Europe and West have adopted an economic model based on injustice. Incentivating to privileged and depriving the lesser has caused austerity. Super rich people gathered huge capital, and common people struggle for daily meeting both end has made the economy stagnant. BRICS countries have kept their capital rationally distributed, which is in circulation, thus, their economies are flourishing. American dream and European dream is doomed with empowering corporates over consumers. The result is clear.

Post 2nd World War, political correctness resulted in laws supporting migrant workers. The moment BRICS offers migration, a real serious problem in Western economies may start. However, population growth among BRICS is preventing them immigration momentarily.

Actually, the growth is due to sanctions. My country has signed contracts to replace all passenger aircraft by 2030. All of them will be produced in Russia. All trains, all ships will be replaced. Literally, many shipyards are being built right now. China is helping to build them, but they are all on the territory of Russia. Many computer manufacturing plants have been built. Russia is even changing the windows operating system to its own. Your media is deceiving you. We in Russia now, like the Soviet Union, produce everything ourselves. Everything except cars. The cars are now Chinese, but they are manufactured in factories in Russia.

*How sanctions affect the Russian economy*
The manufacturing business activity index (PMI Manufacturing) from S&P Global was 54.7 points in February (52.4 in January). The average index value over the past 12 months increased to 53.4 points (53.3 a month earlier). This is the best value since 2008 (for 16 years).
According to Rosstat, in January the output of basic industries increased by 5.3%. If we talk about the physical volume of production, then the past month was the best January in history. Thus, the previous record of January 2021 was broken.
The growth of industrial production by January 2023 was 4.6%. The growth of industrial production is accelerating.
Russia's GDP growth rate in January 2024 increased compared to the previous month. The Ministry of Economic Development reported this on February 28 in its review “On the current situation in the Russian economy.” It reports that in January the country's GDP grew by 4.6% in annual terms after 4.4% in December.
The manufacturing industry accelerated its output growth rate to 7.5% after 5.1% in December. Thus, the engineering complex showed growth of 28.3% year-on-year after 9.5% in December. The metallurgical industry increased its growth rate by 4.9% against 2.8% in December, and the food industry by 7.3% after December’s 1.9%!!!
