- In this video I show how I made raised beds as part of our efforts to tidy up our front yard. I'm using the Japanese traditional method of yakisugi (burnt cedar) to improve the longevity of the raised beds.
Videos I watched on making yakisugi raised beds:

@@davidanalyst671 Just exactly what is your beef?
I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your videos and look forward to the next one!
Wow, thank you!
It's always good day when u upload
🙏😁
Those raised beds look fantastic! I love the contrast of the stained and burnt cedar timber! It's great that your entire family is interested in gardening!
I love the pace of your uploads. They are always a welcome surprise. Also in a CZcams landscape of loud people and weekly uploads. This sort of video is very calming.
I find many CZcamsrs of niche things. Can only sustain weekly content for a while before it becomes repetitive or trend-seeking.
You mentioned you wanted to do more interview and tour content of other Abandoned houses in Japan. Your welcome to do that, but these kinds of odd jobs around the house are my fave. The addition of the burning wood made it extra interesting.
Thanks, appreciate the feedback. These kinds of videos will always be my core content. I do want to do the occasional visit, though I haven't done one in quite a while! 😁
I agree with Danny's sentiment. I just love seeing how you improve the house and the garden. Since you mentioned the fence for the garden there's still lots to do! 😅
I love the yakisugi garden beds. I need that burning gizmo to kill weeds and not the moss in the brick driveway at my house. Meanwhile I'd happily design a new house using yakisugi externally. An architect could finesse the design 😊
Keep up the great work, I love sitting back and watching your videos whenever they come up
Awesome! Thank you.
The one thing i hate and also like about firewood is that the work is never done! Keeps you busy and also makes you warm its very satisfying. Nice job on the beds man.
Thanks mate, yeah, it’s keeping me fit!
Heating with wood is the best. Each log should keep you warm 3 times. Once when you cut it down. Once when you split it, and once when you burn it.
@@Akuma122887 very true! 😄
Starting watching while living in America, and have now moved to Tokyo! Best wishes for you and your loved ones!
Thanks - hope you’re enjoying life in Japan!
The beds look great.
I have built similar things to these in this way, but found they tend to come apart at the corners over time.
To resolve that I now use a lap joint at the corners, drill a hole down through all the posts at the joint, and drive a coated 3/8's rebar through them all and into the ground.
Keeps them from shifting and the corners tight. 🙂
Thanks for that. I hadn't thought about the shifting possibility. Might need to do as you've suggested for future ones.
Enjoy your videos, love your plaid and checkered shirts.
Great to see the progress!Considering what you started out with, you should be really proud how things are coming along! Lot’s of hard work. お疲れ様でした!
Thanks a lot Jordan!
i like the contrast between the lighter brown tops and the charred boxes
The way I click when I see one of your videos 😂. Been following since the start of your journey!
Love to hear it! Thanks.
The black burned wood with the osmo tops made it a beautiful sight. Home grown food is delicious. Hugelkulture is an excellent way to take care of that rain that can flood the place easily while making healthy soil, never expected it to be used by an Aussie living in Japan though 😉
Thanks! We’ll certainly get plenty of rain over wet season and summer!
I saw a short for you on tv in oz the other day but forgot to watch it. I will have to go back and find it.
Thanks, it was probably the SBS Dateline episode?
We watched it on the app. It was nice to see you there but they didn’t do all of your hard work enough justice in my opinion!
I've been on CZcams since its inception. I've subscribed to probably a couple of hundred channels over the years and watched 50 000+ clips (give or take). That said, your channel is one of the best our there. I'm always looking forward to you releasing new content. Always pure quality and wholesomeness. Anyways, keep up the good work. You deserve a 1 M subscribers. /BR
Thanks so much - I appreciate the kind words!
Beautiful solution for unused materials! Hope you & family enjoy great & bountiful fruit of your labor... 👍👍
that was a big snake! it looks beautiful as you clean it up, can't wait to see more!
With every video, I am absolutely astounded by your work ethic!
Watching you do all this work makes me thankful I rent a manshon!
The stag beetle larvae were fascinating.
As a North American I giggled to myself when I saw the blue berry bush and wondered if you are trying to attract bears. 😂 I don't think that there are many, if any in that part of Ibaraki.
The OSMO looked really great on the light colored wood.
That’s right, no bears around here!
I love seeing Japan and hearing my accent.
It's comforting to feel like it could be a reality for me too.
Go for it man!
Love the wooden lasagna! Always a pleasant surprise to see a new video pop up 😌
🙏
The German came out of nowhere, especially the one on the wood stain can 😆
It is interesting to learn which words are the same in different languages
I hope these videos will never end, I enjoy them so much, thank you
These turned out great. I love the addition of the Osmoed wood on top. I look forward to seeing what grows there in future videos.
Am in catch up yet again. I love how you've done these raised beds. They look wonderful. And am a big fan of Hügelkultur. It's just so practical with great results for the plants. Am somewhat envious. Sure you dont want to bring the family for a stay at my house? 😂
I have a nesting pair of magpies and a bandicoot, which is progressively digging up my entire back garden, which would love to tackle those larvae/curl grubs. I'm about to put in a metal raised bed. I have friends nearby who've installed giant 'cage greenhouses' to house every variety of fig known to humankind, nut trees, fruits and vegetables just to beat the possums. It has cost thousands! The dude has an obsession and is an engineering PhD with a homemade giant 3D printer for rapid prototyping in the attic. He writes each printing program himself. He's made etched metal and wooden signs, artworks (eg: a frieze-style wooden pegasus), 2 violins (the second one is a beautiful instrument, the first to see how to do it, but still good to learn on), decorative wooden structures for the glass greenhouse he designed and built (it has an attached balcony for sitting and drinking coffee and/or wine, and the whole understructure is filled with four water tanks to store harvested rainwater. If he wasn't so busy doing his own projects he would love your channel! 😂
Meanwhile I'm going to use a large dog pen to protect my dinosaur kale and other veges, somewhat inspired by the giant cage greenhouses.
Your project to do authentic (plus!) renovation on your house and garden is very inspiring 😊
It looks so good with the torched wood adding that beautiful contrast to the color of the beds. I always learn so much watching your videos ❤
Love seeing a new video from you pop up! Really enjoy your content and seeing the creative approaches you take to improving your space.
What a lot of work! I know because we just increased our raised garden beds by one this year to grow only herbs. We put it close to the kitchen so I can just step outside a few paces to include fresh herbs while cooking. Thanks for posting.
Good idea! Might make something else a bit closer for the herbs!
I have really enjoyed the transformation of your home and property over the years, I like your voice and relaxed manner too, The home and property are beautiful, compared with what you started with
The contrast with the top boards and the posts is very attractive. Thanks for sharing. Charles
No worries, Charles, thanks for watching!
So well done and stylish, like all your projects. Your kids are gonna love the Blueberries!
its crazy to think that i started following you 5 years ago and all the work you've done to your house! it really is amazing to see. thank you for continuing to bring us along for the ride
Excellent video and just the ticket as summer gardening approaches. I almost fell off my chair when you picked up the red container though!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The larvae look a lot like Christmas Beetle ones in Aus. People keep getting rid of curl grubs from lawns then wondering why there aren’t any Christmas Beetles in their area anymore. 😢 🪲 Good to hear you relocated them 💜🐨💜
That pile of dead branches looks like a summertime brown snake heaven.
While there are venomous snakes here, most are not, but I am always mindful of them, coming from Australia!
12:42 That pronunciation was really good! Well done!
Absolutely love every single upload! Living in Tokyo, it's inspiring me to move to the countryside for this life, until I remember that I'm not even a quarter as handy as you! 😅 Keep up the great work, man!
Nice project! Another cleanup done and you mad yet another place look better and be functional at the same time!
I feel inspired 😬
Your posts are always great, even if it is something as simple as cleaning up the yard it's always nice to receive updates!
❤ i came looking for yall since ty doesnt recommend your vids to me anymore. Thanks for sharing. I hope you and the family are well and blessed

Always a treat when you post, thank you!
Great result with the raised garden beds - and the yard looks so much better for it !
I watch your videos while commuting to Tokyo. Really enjoyed it, looking forward to the home being perfected.
Still the best show on CZcams, IMO. Greetings from Houston, Texas.
Wow, thanks! Greetings from Ibaraki, Japan.
From Edmonton, Canada. Love watching your series of videos. The main journey is mostly over now but thank you for posting these follow ups.
No worries, I’ll get back into the main house renovations soon.
its a must click whenever i see you post
Awesome, thanks!
I’m literally planning on doing the same thing. Thanks for the inspiration. I’m always very happy when I see your videos in my inbox :)
BEAUTIFUL!
So happy for you and your family that all thats left to do is make the front yard pretty
Thanks for sharing it ✌️
living the dream life my friend ,wish i had the courage to do it when i was younger , would have made a huge difference to my life
Me: Ohhh, he has a wood chipper!
Steve Buscemi: I'm out.
Have you considered putting your favorite mushroom spawn in the log/wood chip beds?
If you end up with a bed in a shadier/wetter spot, or even mulch an area under a tree, you can encourage edible mushroom beds while they break down the wood and have a fun foraging project.
Those raised beds are beautiful. Great job!!
I love the Yakisugi raised garden beds💜As always, thank you for sharing!
No worries, thanks for watching!
I never heard about Hügelkultur, but I love your pronounciation. And what a great idea to plant Blueberrys❤ I hope many wonderful plants will grow, I am looking forward to see a harvest video
Impressive!
Looks wonderful.
Great video, thanks!
Thank you for posting again.
The trim color looks amazing against the blackened wood!!! Those raised beds sure do wonders with the front yard too. It's good that you're not letting all of that dead wood go to waste at all. Keep it up, you're doing a great job!!!
This was epic thanks for sharing
Another fabulous project completed!
Nice to see your progress as always
Always enjoy your videos, since the beginning! Cheers, from this Canuck in Singapore. 😁
Those are gorgeous 😍
Looking nice! Happy harvest!
THANKS FOR THE INTRO TO HUGEL
those turned out lovely :o
Fantastic planters! Making very good use of the space.
Beautiful beds!
Congratulations on your beautiful house and great video content.
Im pretty sick of the constant street interview / why i moved to Japan videos from other foreigners!
Best wishes from a fellow Australian now residing here ( Japanese wife and child ).
I truly envy your hard work and amazing results 🙏

New video
Good to see you again friend. Very nice raised garden beds. I have heard of the Japanese method of burning the wood to prevent insects. I didn’t know it made the timber water proof also. ❤
Saw you on Dateline 🙂great job, well done.
🙂🐿🌈❤️

Your update is a welcoming surprise. The gardens will add so much to your family in enjoyments as well as to food.
Springtime in Ibaragi - a great time for outdoor projects like gardening. Always happy to see a vid from this channel. I am reminded of my time in Ibaragi some decades ago.
