As a Canadian, the final nail in the golden generation's coffin was definitely the game that made everyone say "wow, they were really lucky to win against Canada..."
Was nice to see some respect put on Canada’s name in that game even though we couldn’t get the result we deserved. I remember, though disappointed, leaving the sports bar I watched that game at proud of Canada. Yes, Belgium was underwhelming…but you cannot take away from Canada’s performance in that game. 🇨🇦

Didn’t realize how important Vincent Kompany was to the Belgium national team
He's basically impossible to replace even three years after his retirement from football. Dude's the embodiment of leadership and charisma and Belgium lacks this after his retirement.
Kompany should be Belgium coach in the future once he has enough experience at club level. That charisma, grit and leadership seemed to not have toned down a bit since he had great stints with Anderlecht and now promoting Burnley to the PL.
If you saw what Kompany said earlier in his career you definitely wouldn’t rate him as much as you do now

It'd probably be solid to check what happened with Chapecoense *after* the plane crash though.
It’s worth a try at some point
As a Belgian this was a great video, I think the future will be okay but I don't think we will ever get a better chance to lift a trophy ever again.

I would like to add an honorable mention. The 2021 Nations League. They reached the semi-final and met France, who when they last met, broke their dreams in thr 2018 World Cup semi final.
This is only the Nations League yes, but it was also an opportunity for revenge against the rival neighbours. They led 2-0 and seemed primed to get their win back and reach their first final in any competition since 1980. And then the collapse happened

As a belgian, I really think that our prime was between 2015-2019, it was the time when we were real contenders. Even though we never actually won something, as a belgian I'm still very proud. World cup 2018 were some of my best memories ever and seeing our small country becoming third was incredible to watch. World cup 2022 was awful though...
I think when people look at Belgium national team, they only look at the 2014-2022 generation, but overall in their entire history for a small country in Europe what they have achieved is fantastic.
Well its 100% amazing for a country with 11mil people reaching 3rd place but Coatia had much less money, way worse infrustructure, almost no hype and a population 3 times smaller, a worse and less experienced coaching staff, no centralized system for youth production and way smaller pool of quality players to choose from and achieved way more. So population wise Belgium always overachieve by almost constantly qualifying through the extremely tough european qualifiers but considering the level of quality and depth you guys had? Expectations must have bee through the roof! Still happy for you guys though. Greece has the same populations and apart for euro 2004 they never even qualify for anything...

My man
As a belgian citizen. I was really emotional throughout the video. Hopefully we can win something this decade. Even a Nation League would be good tbh 😢
I feel you bro. Got emotional in the vid where he talks about the US not making the 2018 WC
You almost won nations league. This year, Croatia (my country) has a shot at winning that. I hope we do but there are strong nations like Spain and Netherlands in there.
Fun fact: if you insult Maradona in Naples, you will not live to see lunch.
I still stand by that to this day, had Meunier not been suspended for the semi final against France, that Belgium would've won the world cup in 2018. They scored goals in bunches in all other games, and the change in shape for them semi final really threw them off.
Can U do one for Holland? They bottled 4 golden generations from 1970-2010!
2014**
@@somethingwithultra7231 I wouldn't count the 2014 team as a Golden Generation. Maybe you could see it as a sort of Last Dance of the remaining players from the 06-10 generation, but the Big 4 were already in decline and Van der Vaart even missed the tournament. On top of that some crucial players around them, like Van Bommel, Van Bronckhorst, even the unfancied but solid enough Heitinga and Mathijsen, had retired and been replaced by lesser players. We also had to resort to playing Kuyt wingback because we had zero competent options in that position. As much as the success of that World Cup was overblown, with Mexico still being angry at the manner we got our victory over them and only getting past Costa Rica on penalties, it was still a good tournament for that mediocre side, and I'll never forget the way we caused Spain to collapse.
@@thomasvrielink299 I suppose that's very fair, I guess it just goes to show how one big match like the one with Spain could reignite alot of hope and faith for a team, though. And I truly hope we get to see such similar matches again in the future, since right now we seem very 50/50 even at our best.
Definitely eyeing something to do with the Dutch and their World Cup failures in the future

I do think this team have disappointed, but tbf to them there haven’t been in a tournament they were in that they were the all out major favorites. The team itself was at its peak in 2018 but France was still better and more stacked than them. It’s not like Belgium hade the only golden generation in this period. Other than France they have hade to deal with Germany and their golden generation at its peak (2014)
Sorry for the spelling, literally just woke up
Also were coming in right after some other generations like Spain and the Netherlands' were fading out/not participating at all in the latter's case.
as a Belgian, I don't see this last "Golden Generation" as a failure. Yes, we didn't take any trophies, but throughout many years, I have truly enjoyed watching the belgian football at the EC's and the WC's. Details have determined we didn't win any trophies, play the game against France again 10 times and we win 8 of them. EC in 2021, the Portuguese players injured half of the team so no Hazard and an injured De Bruyne against Italy etc etc. For a country of 11M inhabitants, I think they gave us a lot of joy !
I’d love to see the rise of Croatia as a national team

That’s not true bro
Funny vid, but wished you would’ve given a slight recap of their 2021 loss in the Nations League semis. I don’t think any loss quite encapsulated the Belgians’ luck like that one. Yes, it’s a lesser tournament, but it was still an opportunity to win an official trophy. And they failed to do so, despite even being up 2-0 at one point.
Yeah looking back it woulda at least been good to mention that tournament
Vincent Kompany NEEDS to become their head coach. With what he’s accomplished in Burnley so far he has proven he has what it takes to creat a cohesive group that will push through all pains and disagreements.
Don't worry about things not being as on schedule as you hoped! We all get things wrong from time to time as humans, and variables out of your control can change things! This video essay is worth the wait regardless!
3rd place at a world cup is something to be proud of and should not be considered a failure, winning internarional trophies is a rare occurance for even the big nations so the fact that our small country achieved that makes it so that i cannot consider them a failed golden generation
I bet $100 on Belgium to win the 2014 WC at 500-1 in 2012. I watched every qualifying game and told everyone I know that DeBruyne would be the greatest MF in the world. It’s been fun but also a nightmare
If I could only watch one CZcams channel for the rest of my life it would be this one. My dopamine receptors are going insane right now
i’m so glad that you’re finally gonna talk about chinese football. it’s frustrating that every club i cheer for keeps collapsing in china 🤦🏻♀️
Personally, I think an Australian national team essay would be interesting. Truly a unique team and history and recent resurgence in its ability, with finally some good prospects to give hope after our own golden generation
Australia is starting to look good. 2022 was by far our best team since 2006. And the current rankings are australias best since the late 2000s. Not to mention the amount of talent we have now aswell, Kuol, irankunda, jordy bos

I think Belgium did pretty well for a small country. Belgium is a very small country and compared to the U.S., China and India their team has always been successful.
No, it hasn't. Football is BY FAR the most popular sport for young players to play in Belgium. This means that the best young athletes there all play football. China is the only one of the three you mentioned that is fair. They have invested tons of money and made improvement of their national team a national priority...only to have the team get worse. Even there, football isn't actually the most popular sport basketball is. In India, they are crazy for cricket and field hockey...and dominate both. The best athletes there play those. As for the US...well, there is American football. The biggest, strongest and fastest athletes play that. Add to this basketball and baseball take more of the best athletic talent. Those that are left play soccer (a sport played by those too small, weak and lacking in hand/eye coordination to play American football, basketball or baseball)...then are expected to compete on International level at football. Not a good combination.
@@brianeleighton didn't read
@@brianeleighton the US is a country of 330mil for ffs. It produces plenty of gold medalists in all sorts of obscure ass sports each Olympics
That USMNT is terrible at soccer runs much deeper than just "oh just not the best athletes"
@@marcofujimoto Yes, it shows the priority of people in the US. Those obscure sports in the Olympics get more resources than soccer does at every rung of the grassroots level. Also, many of the medals the US get come from the events like track and field. Why? Because there are plenty of American football players that also run track in the offseason. They go to college on a football scholarship and compete in track to stay in shape. Look at the sprint speed of wide receivers who go into professional football in the US. Now, bear in mind if a player is super fast but doesn't have the size or hands to be a professional player, they can try out for the US Olympic team. The fact is that the kids who are the best athletes do not play soccer in the US. The tiny kid who can't play American football, basketball, baseball or ice hockey does. They are then expected to compete with football mad nations where it is literally the only major sport and every kid dreams of growing up to be a footballer. The cream of the crop get trained at the youth level and so the men's team is literally the best athletes your country has to offer. The US has every kid dreaming of playing in the NFL, NBA, NHL or in MLB. Those sports get the cream of the crop of young athletes, soccer gets the dregs. The men's team then has 3rd or 4th tier talent at best. The thing a lot of the obscure Olympic events have in common is they are largely individual sports, not team sports. There are many very good athletes who have absolutely zero interest in participating in a team sport where they have to deal with teammates. For those athletes, they would have zero interest in football even if it was the primary team sport in the US.
Edit: Also, American football even poaches talent from American soccer. Pat McAfee is a perfect example. He was actually a very good soccer player growing up. He competed in a punt/pass/kick competition, won it and was offered a scholarship to the University of West Virginia as a kicker/punter. He then got drafted into the NFL and played a professional career as a punter.
@@brianeleighton you're not wrong but there's zero reason the US shouldn't be able to field a top 5 men's soccer team. Athleticism is an easy but cheap excuse. The (shitty) development program in this country is a bigger factor, imo
This, as always, was brilliant. The amount of research and time that goes into these video’s really come through in the quality- keep it up.

@@MrRanaVenenosa uruguay is still bigger than belgium and they won it in 1930 and 1950 when the world cup was way smaller than it is now

Gianni Infantino was there with them though for some reason. (Also Brazil and Serbia trained a few kilometers away from where I used to live in Qatar)

You should do a video on Argentina's missing generations: potential teams that could've won the WC in the past and players who should have been over looked during those times. Do one on Italy as well.
Well thats dumb idea. Many videos can be done on teams who could've won the world cup as the possiblities are endless hypothethically speaking. Whether you have the better players isnt always guaranteed you'll win otherwise netherlands wouldve won it plenty of times and belgium as well amd so on. The world cup as many others have said requires a bit of luck as well. Also if youre a country that started in thr world cup or got into football earlier then pthrr nations you'll mot likely be better. No suprise Argentina is great or better then the US my country because thr Argentinians have been playing in the world cup for a lomg time whereas the US only just recently even started to take football seriously. Needless to say football here or soccer is not even pur top 4 biggest sports. Theres actually a video on that . The teams who started to play football earlier amd participate in the world cup longer have better results overall then Nigeria or morocco or US and so on. More experience. Its like if a brought baseball to Argentina and excpected them to do well against the US. We would win easily for obvious reasons
The 2006 team should’ve gone further. 2010 and 2018 were some of the worst, and in 2014 they played a lot better than anyone expected. It was a miracle they got to the final, and almost beat Germany. That team was so weak compared to the 2022 team
