  • A detailed look at what happened to some of the French statues from the colonial period in Hanoi, especially the 'Statue of Liberty' and the educationalist and scientist Paul Bert's statue. Showing when the 'liberty' statue first arrived, moved around, and where it is now - sort of.

Amazing. Very well told. Followed it like a detective story. And it answered so many questions I had about places I pass by every day almost. Great research, and very well told!

What a wonderful video! I like reading about replicas of the Statue of Liberty around the world. Sometimes I think they have stories to rival that of the Statue of Liberty herself. Many of them wandered around due to other sculptures usurping their pedestals like this one did. Many were melted down for metal recovery during wars. Some simply disappeared without a trace. Until your video, the Hanoi Statue of Liberty was one such example. The sole reference book on models and replicas of the Statue of Liberty mentioned the Hanoi Statue of Liberty but noted that it simply disappeared.
"A replica of Liberty in the same nine-foot size was reportedly offered in July of 1887 to the Protectorate of Tonkin, then under French rule and today part of Vietnam, by the firm of Gaget, Gauthier. Displayed in Hanoi according to the report, the replica occupied various locations over time, and disappeared in 1945.* Despite the implication that the replica was made by Gaget, Gauthier, the firm was not known to have produced large-scale replicas other than for its own purposes, and then only during the period of the statue's construction more than ten years previous. The coincidences of identical size and date suggest the replica may have been companion to the Bordeaux cast, produced at the same time in the foundry of Thiébaut Frères."
*Betz, ibid., p. 217, provides this account although without citation of supporting evidence. According to Betz, the replica's presence in Hanoi was owed to Paul Bert, at the time French Résident in Tonkin and a friend of Bartholdi who in 1888 executed Bert's funerary monument in Auxerre.

Thank you so much for your video. It is so well-done I'm eagerly adding your other titles to my watch list. I've also linked your video to the Statue of Liberty Collectors Group on Facebook as they will no doubt find it fascinating to watch as well.

Great video. A reminder that city planners, a long time ago, used to plan cities with humans in mind.

French gave the Statue of Liberty to the US in 1885 and I presumed the same artist made a smaller version for the French in VN. I thought the French were there just for war until watching this film. they did turn this country into a wealthy region of the far East.
