Great review, but question for the DT crew or the crowd. The DT rating scale effectively ties to the BGG scale. What does the scale have to do with game complexity or game length? I don’t see why a trifle of a game would be any harder to rate than say a super long and complex game. Basically, it sounded like everyone highly recommended the game BUT for the fact that it is barely a game. And to me, any game type/ size/ weight can be a 1 and any a 10.

Good question, and it's a hard one to answer. Short answer, everything effects a rating, and it's all subjective!

Chris here. Many small and simple games get high ratings from me without reservation. Trio was particularly harder because I understand the criticisms that it's practically just Memory Match or Go Fish. Yet, it's a ton of fun and I enjoy it. I'm not clamoring to play it all the time, but I'll always have it in my arsenal. A 7.5 fits just about right!

Thanks for the personal reply Chris. It's definitely a weird game to think about. I like it the least in my play group and I flip between 8 and 9 on it. I think it's a bit higher for me (and I expected higher from you) because I see it as being more fun and interesting than it has any right to be. It's outstanding for what it is; a best in class for a class that I would normally ignore entirely.

I agree, Chris. This is evergreen material. Everyone I tried this with enjoyed it to some extent.

I had nana Christmas edition, wasn't very impressed. Traded it off.

Any game that's fun, compact, and easy to Teach gets points. Plenty of the "game teachers" will appreciate Trio just for the quick teach.

Great review. I'd take the nana art every time.

    Mike, We love you!!!
And Roy, and Chris, and well, pretty much everyone else. But honestly, no one is as awesome as the international, sensational, internet celebrity, Mike DiLisio

My friend from Japan sent me the Japanese version of this game, I like the Japanese version more. And it's so fun, it was my most played games in 2023 even though I only acquired the game on December.

I ordered this off of Amazon a couple of days ago. I was going to order a few for presents but it limited me to only one. Anyhow, looks great and can't wait for my game to arrive (no Prime, so still waiting....).

Got a chance to try this at pax unplugged and bought when I was finished. Fantastic little card game.

You can play this with a deck of cards just remove one suit and the kings. You just have to remember the 7s rule

You just won't have the "spicy" variant then, as the Trios are also paired.
But yeah, the basic version - that's all you need.

    • @AahzmandusPervect

@@DaveHaenze the trios are linked by the fact that their sum or difference equals 7.

A video theme that I think people would enjoy is a discussion/debate between reviewers when the ratings given to a game are off by more than 2.5 points. I think this game would qualify for that type of video, with Tom having rated much lower.

Ok, what about if I get tris of 7s in my hand. And my highest is a 10. How do I play this? Wait for 7 being my highest number and then ask myself for highest card three times in a row?

    • @thedicetower
      @thedicetower  Před měsícem

Yup! Once the 10 is removed from your hand, on your next turn you can ask yourself for your highest card three times. And it's so satisfying.

Let me be the first to say, Tom was right about this game. I was even more frustrated by this game than generic Memory.

The art and card quality to me very disappointing . I prefer the Japanese version.
