However, if you are on the inside lane, and someone in the middle lane is going slower than you, you are permitted to pass them, you do not have to slow down just because they're not going fast enough. For example, you are doing 70 in inside lane, middle lane person is doing 60, you are permitted to continue past them at 70.

some quick additions to the video: 1. Blinkers, they show your intention so it's good to use them but remember that they don't give you the right to change lanes without insuring the lane you change to is free; 2. Always accelerate when merging on the highway to match the speed of traffic on the highway (merge like a zipper); 3. Passing means accelerating to make the pass in order to not disrupt traffic coming fast from behind (I'll give you that you can pass at your cruising speed only if there is no one coming from behind); 4. Don't be distracted and always focus on your driving, always check all your mirrors to be aware what everyone else around you is doing and always check several cars in front in order to predict traffic flow changes; 5. it doesn't slow you down at all if you drive 5-10 miles slower for 20 seconds in order to move with the flow of traffic, you'll drive 5-10 miles faster in some other section of highway (I doubt it will biologically affect the size of the penis if that happens)

A lot of people believe that you use the blinkers when you pass another vehicle and you only turn it off when you're done. This is wrong. You use it to indicate that you want to change lanes and as soon as you're on the other lane, you turn it off. Even though we all learned this when we did the theory part of our drivers license, I see a lot of people keeping the blinker turned on until they're done passing and when they're back to their lane!

The average idiot only drives in the middle lane and the cruising lane. If you want to make progress outside of rush hours you use 'the lane no one uses' .
In rush hours all the lanes are used and the highway is used as a car park.
Even in the early hours of the morning when there might be 3 cars on the highway , the average NZ driver will enter the highway and immediately move to the cruising lane (even if there are 5 lanes!).

Ryan I've driven in many countries, including the USA, Mexico, Iran, Germany (and all over the rest of Europe), North Africa etc. The US in particular, with its enormous dependence on cars, millions of petrolheads, and extensive road network, stands out as being a first-world country with 3rd-world road safety standards, and resultant very high road death/injury statistics. Getting a driver's licence in some states is stupidly easy. Other states allow any kind of self-build vehicle on the road. Lane discipline is optional. There are states with no vehicle safety (road-worthiness) checks. Some places use loony-tune tests for DUI instead of calibrated breathalyzers or drug swabs. It seems any small amount of rain (or long hot dry periods) causes a lot of cars to lose traction - cheap useless tires ? - worn-out suspension ? And the lack of some driver's skills, insight, and consideration is astounding. I saw a lady in Houston who went across all 6 lanes ahead of me, miraculously without incident (also without signalling), and when I passed her I could see she was doing her face make-up in the sun-visor mirror and steering with one elbow. I got accultured to German driving rules, but live in the US now.
I try to practice much of the German lane rules/etiquette I am used to even in the US, but there are exceptions.
One of them that if there are three or more lanes in my direction I hardly ever use the right lane - for the reason mentioned in the video: merging and exiting traffic.
In Germany any exit to an off-ramp has a long enough deceleration lane to allow exiting traffic to get out of the through lane and slow down; any onramp has an acceleration lane long enough to allow people to match their speeds to traffic- and drivers have been trained to actually use them that way. Additionally the onramp acceleration lanes are clearly marked to yield to through traffic if needed.
In the US (at least in where I am) merging lanes sometimes can be arbitrarily short and don't always clearly indicate when merging becomes necessary. They also don't clearly indicate right of way and many people have not been trained to accelerate enough before merging - if there even is space to do so. Exits to off-ramps can be super short with no space to safely decelerate. Many of the people who were cruising in the middle lane cut across the right lane at the last moment to hit the exit, braking massively as they do so. As a result the right lane on a large freeway in an urban area (with frequent on- and off-ramps) feels like an unsafe place to drive where I constantly have to look out and slow down for people braking to exit or merging slowly.
The other exception is that sometimes passing on the right is the way to go, even if though it is less safe than passing on the left. It also is legal in many (most?) states if there are even just two lanes of traffic in the same direction. I do that if it seems safe and it avoids weaving across multiple lanes and back to pass a car that is going slow in the middle (or #2) lane. I also do it to get past people who hog the left lane going slower than the traffic I am flowing with...
That BMW driver is facing an uphill battle...

  • @martinhuhn7813

It´s funny to hear, that it is called lane "etiquette" in the US. Here it is just the law. And in a 3-lane highway the rule sais, that you allowed to stay there, as long as you are ocassionally passing another car (which translates to tens of seconds between passing, not minutes, so, those cars actually have to be there), whilst in a 2-lane situation, you have to return to the right lane after every passing (as long, as that is safe). And, no, if someone else does not swich lanes fast enough, that does not make it legal, to pass them on the right.
You don´t get decent traffic, unless this stuff is part of the driving education and at least now and then enforced by the police.
The system tends to fail in Germany too, if traffic gets very dense and more and more people fear to get boxed in, if they stay on the right lane, not everything is perfect here, but I have never seen such a mess like in that video anywhere in Europe on such an relativly empty highway.
Rechtsfahrgebot: Not really an idea, but the law. And it is not only about lane utilization, but about the general rule, that you have to drive as far to the right, as is reasonable (at your speed). It even applies, if there are no other lanes in your direction (actually, that´s where the exceptions from the rule start). So faster cars can easier pass by slower ones. It does not apply in the limits of a settlement
5 lane highways: I think, we don´t have any of those in Germany. The Autobahn is usually 2 or 3 lanes wide and very rarely you have 4. If people almost always move to the right, when it is free, more lanes are usually not required or helpful.

@Alias_Anybody Yes and when vehicles slow down, this causes a wave effect. One vehicle slows down and the vehicles behind have to slow down slightly more and so on. Five kilometers/miles back, as a result of cumalative error build up, the vehicles are either moving very slowly or are at a complete standstill. A long time ago, when this happened, I used to think that there must have been an accident or something. For a while now, here in UK, the speed limit is reduced when the motorway is congested. This is in an attempt to keep the flow of traffic moving constantly, albeit at a reduced pace, but more efficiently than stop start progress.

It's all about the way you learn how to drive. If you are obligated to learn driving in a driving school, like in most of Europe. And have a severe & expensive exam , everyone picks up the same way of driving. If you learn it from your parents, these little flaws are also passed down every generation. Now I must admit I do think most of Europe , exams are too expensive. But when I lived in the U.S for a few years ( many, many years ago) I didn't have my Dutch licence yet, so I took an exam for an American driver licence . A few questions, a drive around the block and I had my licence. It was cheap, and I could drive around a bit. But when I returned to Europe, it was obvious I picked up a lot of bad habits and had to start allover again ;)

What do you have to do to get your drivers license in the US?
I'm from Luxembourg and here, you have to take a minimum of 12 hours of theory classes and then you pass the theory exam. If you fail, you have to take at least 6 more hours and try again.
When you're done with the theory, you start driving. You can't just ask your parents to show you how to drive, it must be an instructor from an official driving school (which isn't cheap!). You need a minimum of 16 hours and then you pass your test with your instructor sitting next to you and some guy who makes these tests sitting in the back. That guy will tell you where to go. You really need to be careful because he will test you and tell you to turn right on the next intersection, for example, even though you can't turn right there. When this happens, you have to say "Sorry but I can't turn right there".
If you fail, you have to drive for a minimum of 8 additional hours with your instructor and then try again. Back in the day, some people got upset when they failed the exam and beat up the guy who failed them. To avoid that, now, they don't tell you right away if you passed or failed, you get a letter in the mail.
What the guy in this video is saying about merging, about always using the lane on the right except for when you're passing, even if there are 3 lanes or more, these are all things that you learn when you're passing your drivers license. Don't you guys have to learn this in the US? How does it work over there?

Lane hogging and tailgating both fall under the offence of careless driving with police officers having the power to hand out on-the-spot fines of £100 and three penalty points, meaning failing to keep left on the motorway and close following could hit people in the pocket. and in the news this month this headline , Middle lane hogging targeted by national campaign like this headline 11th this month Motorist arrested after being 'caught lane hogging on M60 he was stopped and also drug test. another one Essex Police shared described how they spoke to 'middle lane hoggers' on the couny's roads at night, with some drivers stopped and reported for careless so 3 points and fine. another one M4 middle lane 'hogging' leads to driver's car being seized. Just came back from my holidays/vacations in Florida, spent there more 3 weeks there driving around for more than 2 thousend miles. From Miami to Orlando, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Key West.... What an experience. Loved every minute of it. Yes, It is a totally different ball game driving in the US of A and it's not for a fainthearted people especially when you got used to driving in Europe but you shouldn't beat yourself up over it. Yes it is true in Europe you tend to drive on the right and only move to the left when you about to overtake but driving in Germany is one thing and driving in the rest of the European countries is another. Try Sicily, Naples, Italy, Greek Islands and the mainland, Spain, France, cental and Eastern Europe... and you 'd be surprised. There so many things you cannot do I mean forbiding sighns, forbidden, forbidden ...,you can't park, you can't go cos this is for pedestrians, cyclists,boo!....., not enough parking places in a big cities, narrow roads.... so I'd rather drive in America , wide straight rodes, many lines, and driving one of those big American cars , big engine and the bigger the better than one of those, they try to sell us here 1 liter 3 cylinder crap they call an environmentally friendly vehicle! that consumes more petrol on a weight to weight ratio vs big American car, and way, way smaller. So for me America sorta wins and yes it'll be safer if everyone were to drive on the right and use the left line.... but it is what it is. And as usual the devil is in details. Thanks anyway.

Americans believe that anything they are told by police , government, any authority, will impinge on their rights and they believe that is more important than the law, so they do what they want ,also some believe that if they know the law they can get into trouble if they don't know the law they will be let off,
And I saw an American tell a police officer they didn't deserve to have a fine as they didn't know the law ,the officer then asked them if they knew the same.law but using different words and he said he did and got the ticket 👍

He said what I was going to say, which is people entering the highway by merging into the right lane keep obliging you to either slow down to let them in or move to a left lane to allow them in. The fault here is in the road design. The On Ramp should not just disappear into the Slower Lane; there should be a dedicated lane for the merging traffic to continue on until it's safe to merge across to another lane. So a three lane road should have a fourth lane for the merging traffic that should continue to be a fourth lane until it becomes [eventually] the off ramp. This might be hard to visualize but it's really simple: don't punish people for driving in the right lane.

Undertaking, or passing on the left in the UK is not a specific offence under the Road Traffic Act, however if you cause an accident when doing so you could be reported for driving without giving due consideration to other road users, or for driving carelessly, recklessly, or dangerously. Causing death by dangerous driving carries a maximum penalty of between 14 years and life imprisonment. There is no legal requirement in the UK to use your indicators (blinkers) to move into the left-hand hand lane. This is because that is where you are supposed to be.

In the UK, it's ALWAYS stay left unless overtaking. Once you have overtaken, move back to the left when safely possible. I now live in Spain and it's exactly the same rule, but obviously move back to right instead of left.
You still encounter the "middle lane dickhead" who have no idea what's going on around them, but in Spain they will flash the $h!t out of you while driving right up your ar$e (and I mean almost in the boot) until you get out of the way.

It's about education and enforcement. A few public holidays i've been on the M1 (Sydney-Newcastle NSW) and been overtaken by a cop car with USE LEFT LANE on his electronic information board. Everyone during this busy time was driving at 110kmh (70mph) in the left and middle lane. If anyone ventured into the right lane to overtake he knew they must be over the speed limit and pulled them over. It felt over controlling but it seemed to work.

Accidents per capita is not a useful metric, as it is heavily influenced by how many people have cars.
Accidents per km (or mile!) is a much better reflection on how dangerous the roads are.
Unfortunately Wikipedia only has this data for 25 countries, based on deaths rather than accidents, and the countries (from most to least dangerous) are: Mexico, Malaysia, Czechia, South Korea, USA, Belgium, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Slovenia, Israel, France, Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, Iceland, Netherlands, Japan, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, UK, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway.

The way to change how people drive in general is to make them actually learn how to drive to get their licence. In the US this is avoided so that more people can buy cars quicker. If you have to take your driving test 10 times to learn, that's what you need to do.

Passing on the right would be absolutly illegal in Germany. If you pass someone on the right lane you will loose your licence. The reason: You are only supposed to give way and care for traffic on the left lane of you. Switching lane to the right you are not responsible to watch out for traffic behind you (as you are overtaking and therefore should be faster then anyone on the right lane and they are prohibited to pass on the right). Passing on the right would be absolutly dangerous as NOBODY in germany will expect that. We have the so called "Rechtsfahrgebot" meaning you have to stick to the right lane as much as possible, use the left lane for overtaking and you are not allowed passing on the right lane. Passing on the right is only allowed if you are stuck in a traffic jam and the left lane is almost standing.

It's actually quite easy for me to stay in the right lane since hardly anyone sticks to the speed limit here in NJ. On the interstate I'll set my cruise control to 5 over the speed limit and stay there as much as possible. Even then I have people passing me like I'm standing still.

I recently experienced two cars (I think it was Swedes or Danes) on the German Autobahn, driving side by side at the exact same speed (like 130 km/h) in the right and middle lane. I approached from behind and had to go from the right lane all the way over to the left lane, then back into right lane in order to pass them. So annoying!
But I don't want to blame foreigners only. There are tons of Germans who apparently won their driver's licence in the lottery ("Führerschein im Lotto gewonnen", as we say in Germany) and many Mittelspurschleicher (people going slowly hanging in the middle lane forever).
