Mr. Magoo in "A Day at the Beach" featuring Charlie - Rare & Uncensored

  • This is a rare, undubbed, uncensored Mr. Magoo cartoon. By today's standards, Mr. Magoo was arguably the most politically incorrect cartoon series ever created. Not only does the humor revolve around Mr. Magoo's visual impairment, the depiction of Charlie (Magoo's assistant or houseboy) would be considered an example of blatant racist stereotyping by today's standards. Most other existing Mr. Magoo cartoons have used voiceover for Charlie's character to conform to today's cultural standards.

Many thanks for uploading this terrific clip in full, uncensored glory! I wish there was not such a concerted effort by every generation to customise and tailor everything to what is right at present. Leave all art and history intact so we can appreciate what was both good and bad from a given time and learn from it. Being of Chinese background and knowing this simply reflects another time, I am not at all offended and think these are hilarious characters across all categorical lines.

As kids, my Asian neighbor and I used to watch reruns of this cartoon over at my house. He spoke better English than I, but he had me rolling on the floor mimicking this exaggerated Asian caricature to a T. I guess I could have made fun of him too, but his 34 ACT score brain would've just made me look extremely ridiculous. Cheers to my old buddy.

That said, as a white man, I don't give a rat's ass about being stereotyped. Yes, being constantly misjudged as a stoner (because I have long hair) does get annoying after a while. But I won't go making a big deal about it. And I actually enjoy all the "ginger" stereotypes. They're charmingly comical. But then, I'm not an uptight jackass. I can laugh at myself, just fine.

Expect that unlike the racism in Theatrical Cartoons which where actually hilarious, this is just painfully unfunny. It doesn't help this was the 60s and racism dying out at this point. UPA also had a Dick Tracy Cartoon at this time which also had harmful and unfunny stereotypes.
They were both two sidekicks for Dick Tracy or some crap like that. As a Mexican, I have to say that the Mexican sidekick's voice is just so annoying and makes me wanna ripped off my ears. Gotta be Paul Frees' worst voice roles ever.
Wouldn't say the 60s were a bad time for Animation, I feel like shit really went downhill in the 70s-Mid 80s. I very much love Hanna-Barbera Cartoons. Recently, I've been developing a disliking for other TV Cartoons from that time period like Jay Ward, Total Television, and 60s UPA.

Actually there are some old school white comedians that get making fun of blacks right. Most black comics white jokes are generally about how white people treat black people or how they act in movies anyway. As long as the jokes aren't expressing inferiority a lot of white comedians with good timing can get away with it.

For anyone to suggest that ALL Asian people talk like Cholly, would be racist. To suggest that those who DO speak like Cholly speaks do so because it's genetic, THOSE fools would be racist. Those who stereotype can be racist and those who are racist usually stereotype, but the two are not the same thing. Where did the voice actor for Cholly get the accent? Did he just make it up out of thin air? Of course not, that is how SOME Asian people did sound and do sound when speaking. It's nurture not nature. Just as SOME white people talk with heavy southern accents & SOME black people speak with cultural slang. We need to stop being so sensitive and be able to laugh at ourselves now and then. Exaggerating what makes us different can be a source of humor when it is not done with hatred, or a "we're better, you're inferior" type of attitude.

While Magoo is the laughable utter buffoon of the series, and Charlie is undoubtedly the much smarter and most insightful of the two - he's the voice of reason, carried along helplessly by the unstoppable force of nature that is Magoo - the verbal tics, fortune-cookie dialogue, ridiculous 19th-century "coolie" dress (for a Sixties cartoon, beyond anachronistic), skin/eyes/teeth design, and fawning subservitude is jarring in any age and time, not just today. Nevertheless, for animation history's and accuracy's sake, and for spurring healthy discussion on race and roles, he should be left as is.
