If you purchase an RV kit (any model), and you've found value in my videos, please submit the referral form given to you with my builder number (42315), and, at no charge to you, Vans will send me $100, which in turn will be used to get our build off of the ground 🛫
Note: these videos are not for instructional purposes or to be intended as how-to guides. These are simply videos documenting our experimental plane build journey, and the lessons learned along the way.
IF harbor freight sponsored this video lol. JK i love it keep it up!!!
Haha. I do seem to have just about everything from there 😂. Thank you!
Knocked this out in two days - easily could have done it in one but wanted to make sure I had time to finish so the sealant wouldn't harden. Thanks for making this video -
Nice work! I don’t blame you. Better to take time than feel rushed with sealant curing. Thanks for watching!
dang you sleeping wing your wings lol
Great video. Minor detail: the rivets shouldn't really come off while you drill them out. Use a #36 drill bit which just weakens the rivet, then a punch to break off the head. That way, the holes in the skin stay untouched.
Thank you! And thank you for the tip. Drilling out pop rivets is a real weakness of mine since I haven’t really done it much. I was worried about ovaling the holes so I was trying to stop right when the head popped off, which was pretty difficult. Your method of a #36 bit seems so much more safe and repeatable. I’ll be doing that going forward. Thanks again!
This was a good tip. Came out super easy...
Another great video Austin. And once again, you have such a great attitude - first with laser cut parts and now with this SB. Laser cut parts web portal testing by customers started on Sep 18th :-)
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. And that’s great to hear. Definitely makes sense to have the portal thoroughly tested before it is launched. Looking forward to seeing and using the final product
It has been my experience that CS-3204 and equivalent tank sealants don't adhere well to factory-fresh Alclad 2024-T3 that has not been scuffed, even when those surfaces have been thoroughly cleaned with acetone or MEK. Will be interesting to see how these repairs hold up over 1000 hours of flight time on assemblies that have not been scuffed and/or primed.
That’s a great point! Never really thought about that when I was doing the SB. I could have pretty easily taped scotchbrite to the end of a ruler and scuffed it up a bit before final cleaning….. we shall see how long it holds up!
Great Video!
Thank you!
Austin - Did you have any trouble with the tank sealant leaking around the aluminum tubing that you taped to it? I saw a post on VAF where a guy used AN fittings to connect the aluminum tubing to the tank sealant but that requires a flare tool (~$150) which I don't have. I don't mind buying the flare tool if it's required but you seemed to make do without it. Just wonder how well using tape (and sticks for support) worked for you.
I saw that post too. Seemed very sturdy but not needed in my opinion. I had no issues with mine. I used that heavy duty black gorilla tape, then added those sticks and wrapped it all in electrical tape. No leaks 👍
@@AustinManke Great! As always, thanks for taking the time to reply!
@@bertschb any time. Happy to help!
I took a sprinkler riser tube and taped that over the tubing and nipple joint.. Worked great - it was about 6-8 inches long.
