Reconstructing a severed body

- In this video, Tracy described the process she used to bring a poor person's body back together for a viewing, after a horrific accident in which the torso was completely severed and arrived in the mortuary as two separate parts in the body bag. The person was treated with total dignity and respect as Tracy worked to aesthetically repair the injuries and prepare the person so the family could say their goodbyes. It was an extremely confronting case and one that will stay with Tracy forever.
The mortuary work done to repair and reconnect limbs, and in this case, a severed torso, is done at the request of a family to view their loved one. The family are aware of the injuries that have occurred and feel a need to see their loved one before burial or cremation to allow closure.
It is the mortician's job to make this experience as least painful, horrific or upsetting for the family as possible.
Thank you for your support in watching this video. We believe it is important that the public has access to understand the work that is done behind the mortuary's closed doors, if they choose to.
Til next time,
stay safe,

When my mother was taken in a car accident at a very young age it was the most beautiful thing that her hairdresser volunteered to do her hair. It was a blessing🙏
That's so very special ❤️
so sorry you lost your mother so young 🌱💔❤️❤️
my mom's best friend (also her hair stylist) did her hair and makeup. she was beautiful and looked like mom. 💗
❤
My brother was killed in Car accident in his early 30’s, so his side of his head was damaged, his ear fell off so they used flowers and made him presented well for open casket. You guys are amazing.
Oh my goodness so very sorry for the loss of your brother 😔 we both send you our deepest condolences 🌹🌹
You take good care ❤️❤️
The woman who fixes the body is really a angel its a hard job but worth it to give the family one more chance to look at there loved ones .
Thank you so much for your kind words ❤️❤️
I can not thank you enough for answering my question that I still apologize for about male genitals. 8 years before my son passed away he was in a house fire and burned 65% of his body and was in a coma for 2 months. He got his grandma and dog out and they went back in so he went back in to get them out again. His dog didn't get out. Grandma passed a week after the fire. I can still smell that burn smell of his body and it's a smell you wish you never smelled. He couldn't deal with the mental and physical pain and turned to heroin laced with fentanyl and that killed him November 11,2015. Love you both so much and missed you. So happy you both are back!!!!!!!
Oh darling Cindy ❤️ you have been through the mill, how tragic 😞 that's a lots to cope with, can't imagine what you have endured. You are amazing and brave. Sharing your story we hope has and will help through your healing because let's face it and I speak from experience (Tracy here) the pain of loss never leave us, we just choose to walk a different direction to help cope with our losses🙏
Please don't apologise about the genital questions honestly I really can not understand some people! We all have genitals in one shape or another it's just another part of the human body.
We are glad to be back too, we missed you guys 🥰
Be kind to yourself always and take good care hugs from us both downunder 🦘🥰❤️
Thanks to a wonderful person like you we got to say goodbye to my Uncle, who died in a car crash. He was put back together so well you'd not have known how badly he was hurt. When my my cousin was killed in a train accident we chose not to have him reconstructed, it just wasn't practical given his injuries.
So very glad you were able to get that goodbye ❤️ I know personally how hard it is when you don't 😞
Thank you for sharing ❤️❤️
It takes an extremely special person to do what you do. Your nurturing and companionate nature are beautiful to see. I’m sure the families that you come in contact with feel the same way.❤️
Wow, thank you! 🙏❤️❤️
I agree with you. Thank you for what you all do.
You are literally an Angel…being able to do what you do for a family who wants and needs to see their loved one no matter how bad it is. 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼
Thank you so much 🙏❤️❤️
While working at the MEs office, a body came in and five minutes later, his head was brought in a cardboard box. My curiosity got to me but I learned a valuable lesson…”you can’t “unsee” what you’ve already seen.” Keep in mind, I wasn’t even 20 years old. Fascinating but so raw, it needs healthy processing. 🖤🖤
Oh my word Missy that would have been such a traumatic site to see and such a young age too. You do fascinating work 🖤🖤
You can’t put toothpaste back in the tube 😢
You're such a caring mortician. Thank you for taking care of people with respect and dignity.
Hi, thank you for your kind words 🤗❤️❤️
Sorry guys but one more thing and I'll stop!!! Thank you, Tracy for what you and all those who do the work you do, I hope you know how very important the work you do is for all of us that have lost someone we loved.
Thank you so very much Susan. You are always so kind. Big hugs from me, Tracy 🤗🧡❤️💛
@@Areyoudyingtoknow Hugs back to you, Tracy 🙂
🤗
Thank you SO MUCH for the loving work you put in to reconstruction of broken loved ones. You give the families of the lost ones a semblance of peace 🕊️
Thank you so much very kind of you ❤️❤️
It’s such an amazing gift you give to the bereaved. I lost my best friend in an accident years ago. She was missing for several days in July before she was found at the bottom of the gorge and they said to remember how she was and it still haunts me that I never got to say goodbye. I’d given anything to see her one more time.
When my cousin passed in a motorcycle accident the weather was cold so even though he was laying in the field over a day he was still able to be fixed up and looked very peaceful.
So very sorry to hear 😞 thank you for sharing, I totally understand wanting to see your friend so badly, that's why I do this job because my mum was killed and we were never allowed to see her 😔
Take good care 💚💚
Tracy, what you do is the most selfless, compassionate thing you could do for a family. God bless you for what you do.
Thank you again so kind 🙏❤️❤️
Im a current mortuary student and your channel has been so helpful in learning things and getting a idea of different things that can happen. Thank you
You are so welcome! 🤗 Good luck with it all 🥰❤️❤️
Good luck 🍀
In awe of what you do with the respect with which you provide it. The closure of a viewing is so important to many. I'm of a strong constitution ( butchers granddaughter) but there are limits for everyone. Absolutely respectful of your skill and care.
Thank you so much, somedays my limits are challenged 😞❤️❤️
A very close friend sadly took his own life many years ago at only age 19 via a .308 rifle to the mouth - the mortician did a superb job of reconstructing him for a viewing - apart from some minor signs of trauma around the eyes, he looked very good - sadly his demise tore his family apart - 😢😢😢
Oh my goodness that's so very 😢 sorry to hear, sending you our best 🙏💚💚
Poor Trish! My heart felt for you at the beginning as you were holding onto Cal. I thought you were going to literally hide behind him! You are so brave and calm when Tracy talks about difficult topics.
Bless your heart Tracy, you are an amazing person. Trish, your hair looks great!
Thank you so much! From the both of us 🥰🥰
My dad was a police officer who had witnessed many a post-mortem and he told me how they did them when I was about 10. I wasn’t frightened - more intrigued !
I’ve always had much admiration for morticians etc., who do such a wonderful job !
God Bless yall for the work you do. 💕
You are so kind, thank you ❤️❤️
I see something very special in you- God bless you for doing what you do.
You are so kind thank you ❤️❤️
I say this with the utmost respect and love for my friend and his family. He was hit as a pedestrian and dragged under the car the weekend when Princess Diana died. I can't conceive how he suffered in those seconds before death. We who worked with him decided to go to the funeral home at the same time to support our friend, his family and each other. I will never forget what I saw. He should have never been in an open casket. He didn't even look like himself. We were all taken aback. His mom had a large framed picture of him next to the casket. he looked nothing like his picture. I knew him for years and I was shocked. My decision would have been closed casket. I make no judgement on his family for deciding differently nor do I make judgement on the funeral home. i cant imagine what they had to work with. It was a horrific accident. For me it was difficult knowing he was gone but the last picture in my mind of him was traumatic. rest in peace Jeffrey, you are free now...
So very sorry 😔 sending you our deepest condolences 🌹
Sorry you seen that trauma, hope you are doing ok 🙏 take good care of yourself ❤️❤️

Thank you so much 🙏 sending hugs to you in beautiful Sweden ❤️❤️
What a lot of work!! God bless you for the hard work you do! A very special person to do this work. Treating the person with respect as well the the deceased’s family. A physically & mentally challenging job.
As a mother, why would a mother want to see their child in such a state?! Why would you want that mental image seared into their memory?! Remember your child as they were not the trauma they sustained. As for me, it’s hard enough remembering the death of my mother ( which wasn’t peaceful) it’s haunting. God bless you for your amazing & important work.❤
Amen
Thank you so much 🙏❤️❤️
I don't work in this industry but, I hear what you are saying and yes most don't want to see the 'Afterward' of what is left after a accident or burning death, yes, I too would not recommend a viewing. If a reconstruction can be done with less injury and can be covered and everything will look more normal, not saying exactly normal but close then yeh do this and have the viewing.
Now with my husband's grandfather he died on the toliet and was not found for a week, so his head neck and upper torso was totally black (he was Native American and Caucasian). The mortician said she could not make him presentable, but she knew someone, who could do the reconstruction and make him as normal as possible. Yes, here in the USA they have very good reconstructionist. This was back in the 1980s and the reconstructionist did charge for his work since the face and chest did have to have a lot of work. The price was not all that expensive, considering it took three days to finish. Not sure if reconstructionist these days charge a pretty expensive amount. Not sure if the morticians here in the USA are reconstructionist or not, maybe? Any way when the family had the viewing, we were all amazed that he looked like he had in life, infact he looked at least two to three years younger and looked like he was just napping and might just wake any minute. The viewing was for everyone after the family saw him, as the decision had to be made to allow others to see him.
Ladies thank you for your video's they are great and informative!
Oh wow thank you for sharing your story. It's good to hear that the viewing was able to go ahead with the skills of that mortician 🤗
Take good care ❤️❤️

My dad died when I was seventeen, it was a sudden death, and wasn’t found for about two days in the summer time, so when they found him decomp had started. But not being able to see him really messed my closure of his passing up, for years it was almost like disbelief that he even passed. No closure. It was a huge mess in life at that time, he was in a different state as well. It was very hard. I didn’t know we had the choice to view even if it’s not recommended. Thank youguys for what you do! Tracy you’re amazing for what you do! Thank youguys for sharing information ❤
So very sorry to hear this 😞

I really admire you for being able to do reconstruction! I was always terrible at it. I would like to have seen my Grandfather's reconstruction when he passed. He died in a head-on train collision on New Years day of 1957, and was badly damaged in his legs, pelvis, abdomen, and the back of his head. He was reconstructed and they had the visitation, which lasted for 3 days, and the funeral all there at the house. Much respect to you, and thanks for another great video!
Ooh no so sorry in the tragic death of your grandfather. How terrible sad ❤️❤️
Thanks so much. Fortunately for me, I was not around yet, but I was told that my Grandmother had to be sedated during the whole thing.@@Areyoudyingtoknow
Wow that would have been so traumatic for her 💔
Have you ever had someone not like the reconstruction you have done as I would imagine that must be upsetting for you Tracy and do you ever get people wanting to see there family members without reconstruction after a horrific accident please Tracy and thank you for everything you do sending love from Thurso Higlands Scotland love to you both xxx
Hi yes I have had many family requesting no reconstruction and viewing them 😔
We can never stop any one viewing but only advise it could be very traumatic and you can never unsee what you see ❤️❤️

Geez I just stumbled your channel on CZcams. You ladies must be really brave of what you do.

My uncle Robert Newton was brutally murdered on the 20 June 1994 he was 47, they found his body in a pond. We were told 1 day later on the 21 June. I went to the funeral home with my sister who asked if we could view him and the funeral director told us not to. I didn't want to see him anyhow like that, I just wanted to remember him the way he was the last time I had seen him. It broke my heart the day he died and still pains me to this day. I also thought about Emmet Till too, such a sad and horrific ending for a little boy. I loved how courageous his mother was, we should all learn from it but unfortunately in this world some do not. You Tracey are a star to behold taking care of those that are passed and still need care! xx ps, you can see my uncle's remembrance page at Wakefield, Yorkshire crematorium online.
Hi, so very sorry to hear 😞 about your uncle Robert. I had a look at the Remembrance page 💔❤️
Sending you lots of love ❤️❤️
I lost a friend in 2000 to a murder/suicide. She was shot twice in the head with a sawed off 12 gauge shotgun, he then shot himself. She was only 16 and they had to identify her by a birthmark on her thigh so of course It was a closed casket.
It's great that you are able to do this for families.
That horrific. So sad 😢
Awesome video again ladies,, Ok, can i just ask, (not sure if youve covered this before, and ive been subbed since your beginning lol)) How did you react Tracy, when for the 1st time, a body either exhaled, groaned or moved whilst in your care.. Thank you
You have been with us from the beginning and we love and thank you for that 😘
Well I nearly 💩 my pants and thought what the ........ I am I doing here this is scary stuff 😮

I've seen many dead people (nursing) and the presentation of a loved one is the most important thing we can do for the family and the person themselves. A last bit of respect and dignity that can be provided is very least we can do.
Absolutely totally agree 💯 🥰❤️

Hi! I’m sure you’ve answered this before, but how are you able to look past the horrid injuries some have? I hate the sight of blood and can hardly look at a cut if I have one, yet I find your field of work fascinating! Is it something you “get used to”?
Hi, well funny you say that but if I see someone alive accidentally cut themselves and I see blood it makes me feel light headed. I think it's the disconnect you have to make when working in this job. I know seeing all the blood and awful injuries on a deceased body that I can not save this person I can only clean and care for this person so the family doesn't have to see the trauma only hopefully a peaceful last goodbye 🙏 ❤️
Hey my Australian lady friends! Another interesting utube. ❤️ you 2 Richard from Florida USA 🇺🇸
Hello there! Thank you Richard 🤗❤️❤️
Not only was it so hard to hear these stories, but it was hard to see you so affected, Tracy. But that just shows how much you care and how important your job is.
I will always wish i could've seen my mom, but it was so sudden and i honestly didn't know what to do. She died so quickly then was brought back and on the ventilator for 3 days, swelling up from the fluids... I could barely look at her the entire time. And i was scared if i viewed her after, she'd look worse. I was extremely traumatized. But i know now, I should've seen her. I knew she didn't want to be embalmed, and we had to do cremation because of cost...but i wish i saw her before because i have no sense of closure. (As much as you can have with a sudden death of someone so important. I know you know exactly what i mean, having been there yourself.)
...Sorry for the super long comment! On a happier note, I'd love for you to be able to come to America one day! Would be so interesting to hear your thoughts on the differences here.

A friend of mine cancelled his subscription to Life Magazine with a 50 caliber firearm. He tucked the weapon under his chin and pulled the trigger. My gut told me he was gone before we knew what he was up to. He was in the military. There is no way for anyone to put him back together so his wife and children could see him one last time. I’m gutted.
I’ve seen photos of other suicides with a 45 caliber or more. Messy and awful.
So very sorry to hear such a tragic story 😔 💔❤️❤️
I think people are beginning to realize that there’s a lot of procedures done to the dead that are not necessarily needed and can be an expense that is avoidable. Death is natural and we should not fear it as it’s going to happen to all of us. All you can do is be completely honest with the families and then obey their wishes. And when it comes to children I am not at all surprised when the parents need to see their child’s body. There needs to be proof as well sometimes. Thank you for sharing ladies xo
Thank you 🙏❤️❤️
Emmett Till died in 1955 in Mississippi, wanted you to have the correct information.
We did talk about the case a while ago on one of our videos just can't remember the exact one sorry 😬❤️

What do you do with a person who has an ileostomy bag? Do they decompose super fast because their intestines are exposed? Seems like the gases would blow up really quick and cause problems.
Hi, yes bacterial build up can be slightly fast but not always. The bag would be removed then would aspirate through that area then treat with a cavity fluid slowing down the decomposition. Thank you for your question take care 😊💚
Tracy, My dad died suddenly, I’ve told you about him in the heart tap video. Because of his massive brain hemorrhage due to leukemia, he woke up with black eyes one day then the next. I was told it had to be closed casket because his face couldn’t be shown because it was “unsightly”. I wasn’t allowed to go, this is 2nd hand information. Cheers.
Yes you did and I am so very sorry you never got to see your dad 😞 Hope you are doing ok 🙏❤️❤️

I had a friend to pass away from a car accident. Both him & the driver was killed after pulling out in front of a large grain truck. His mother had an open casket & even to this day 23 yrs later, I still remember what he looked like. They had to do some major reconstruction & Im sure they did the best they could but it looked nothing like him. I know his mother wanted people to have a chance to say goodbye & I’ve always thought how strong she was to be burying her only child.
What a tragic story 😞
The poor mother having to go through that 💔❤️❤️
Hello ladies! Trish, I LOVE your beautiful blonde hair. You look beautiful.
Traci, I wish I were younger so I could take these courses. But I’d still love to watch a total prep. From intake to the very end.
Thank you so much 😊 I am forever changing my hair theses days 😉🥰❤️❤️
I’m sure it has to be frustrating for you ladies to figure out all these different situations. I had a supervisor years ago that got hit head on by a drunk driver. His left arm was totally detached. When I went to his wake, I could see that his arm was detached. The man was up for retirement the following month. Thank you ladies for another great video
That's a sad story Neil, the poor man 😔 💚
@@Areyoudyingtoknow thank you ladies. He was a really nice man
Kudos to you who do this work. Omg. I could never do your job. I’m too squeamish 🤢. My father was a hospital orderly in the army and was tasked with packing the bodies of the people who passed. I am too squeamish for that as well. You are unsung heroes in my opinion ❤
You are so kind thank you ☺️❤️❤️
My family is Italian Catholic. When my mom died, my aunt asked me if she was going to be able to see her sister. I knew that was very important for her remaining siblings. To be able to see, touch and say goodbye to their sister. ❤
Yes it is so very important to lots of families to have that last goodbye. So very sorry to hear you have lost your mom 😔❤️❤️
How do you work on a body when it’s completely covered up. Presumably because it’s embarrassed?
Thought we might get to see something.
I uncover them as required to work on them, but we dont show people on our channel unless we have their permission and even then we wont show the graphic stuff out of respect. There are other channels that do this.
Hi girls 👋 Tracy, I recall you saying that you use a rod/piping when you reattach a head to a body. With this case of the body severed in two pieces, did you just suture them back together, or did you reinforce them, similar to the head situation? I’m imagining you wouldn’t necessarily have to do it, but it would just be a bit awkward lifting the body? (even assuming you’d get help from another person to lift the body in either case).
Also, you mentioned the lady wanting to view the burnt body, and that she signed some paperwork. Is it basically along the lines of “I have been advised of the extent of the injuries/condition of the body, and I still wish to view the deceased” ? Is it a legal thing or just so that it’s clearly acknowledged and understood by everyone that they were advised of the harsh reality of the situation, and they still wanted to view?
Again in this video, it is clear how much you care about people - both the living and the dead - and we’re so fortunate to have you. ❤️
Hi, it's all sutures together no rods used and yes I did need help in turning the body.
Yes your right, it's not a legal document the mother signed it was an acknowledgement of the advice given against a viewing.
Thank you as always take good care ❤️❤️
I wish you guys were around here. My Cousin basically blew his face off with a 9mm. He was like a brother. I wish we could've seen him to say goodbye. Funeral homes where I live were like no reconstruction. You don't want to see him poor guy. No insurance and nobody else would pay for a reconstruction or a service. He was sent to the crematorium. Was very sad he was 39. I wanted to be in this business since I was like 16. I only backed out because I think I'd lose it with babies and children.
Oh no sorry to hear 😔 that's so very sad. 💔❤️❤️
Interesting stuff 🤔
Thank you ❤️
Do you have a platform to show actual reconstruction, obviously without identifying the deceased, or do you have plans to set up another channel that goes into more visual detail.
Hi, no we don't. We are hoping in the future to used simulator to show some reconstruction work. 💚
Question ladies.... can you use an electric cautery in post-mortem cases? It just occurred to me when Tracy was talking about using a cautery chemical in this one. Another great video ladies, bravo 👍
Yes you can! I just don't have theses instruments at my work place but other funeral homes do. ❤️❤️
Is there an extra fee to reconstruct someone or is it all included in the full cost? Just curious.
Hi Kathy, the only extra fee is if Embalming is needed otherwise no nothing extra and I often work many unpaid hours just so I can fix that person as best I can. ❤️❤️
Very interesting, a job to consider
❤️❤️
I have you ever just cried over a death or a group of deaths? I’m not typically squeamish, but I am very sensitive. I think I would be overcome with emotion if a child or children or especially an entire family were all killed in an accident, and the mortuary where I were was tasked with making all of them ready for a viewing. Do you ever have to blink back tears when a baby or young child dies? Have you ever had a situation where an accident has taken a whole family or the majority of a family? Here in the US we had 3 siblings all killed in a car accident with a drunk driver. So many beautiful young lives snuffed out so quickly. And the parents spend days at the cemetery just polishing and sweeping the monument over their graves. They each have a photo and give a brief description of their interests and accomplishments. And those things would play over and over in my head. I just know it. And thank you for always being so compassionate with the deceased and their families. You’re a very special person with a huge heart. ❤
Yes I cry lots.
Such sad story 😞
❤️❤️
I just thought you would have a type of body form, we were told to supply long sleeves and long pants for both boys who were killed in an horrific car accident mother my sister could not recognise one son. She was with her husband and he thought he could tell by the shape of his nose. Very sad time in our family. BUT the mortician was excellent.
Oh my goodness so very sorry to hear 😞 that's terrible sad. Take good care of yourself ❤️❤️
Im curious does your job offer counseling or anything like that if something is incredibly jarring or horrific (traumatizing)
Yes, of course. We have several levels of professional support available. We are well supported in this regard because it can be a tough job sometimes 💙
