I agree that Tractor Supply is a good place to refill. They charge by the gallon instead of by the bottle size so here you can top off partially full bottles without having to pay the full bottle price. Most RV parks will charge by the bottle size, so if your bottle is already half full your penalized. Also Flying J is good because they’re usually price competitive and sell by the gallon. They also have 24/7 service. I once ran out at 1am on a cold night. Luckily Flying J was close by and I was there and back to the camper by 2am.
One item I would add, not all propane refills give you a full tank. The propane exchanges typically give you 4 gallons for propane. Tractor Supply not only fills the tanks properly, they only charge for what they actually put in your tank.
I had your experience of having to leave the tank overnight the other day filling a propane tank, but it was new so I had to get it purged. Thanks for the heads up on Costco. We recently got a membership and the propane is one of the few things that I would find attractive at Costco. That and toilet paper, the other stuff is just in too large of quantities for 2 people.

Sometimes I find propane by searching Google Maps for “welding supply”. They sell gases and often have propane for reasonable prices. If they have one of the giant 10,000 gallon tanks, they’re buying in bulk and often offer it cheaper.

Using an extend a stay helps with changing tanks for a motorhome
Costco is the best price ever.. not all place do propane refills.. Best way to find out is use the costco app ,, tap warehouse and then filter to propane.. If you are going there for other stuff its cool if making a special trip call to make sure they have gas and actually do refill.. One location in the Raleigh NC area is shown but DOES not have a refill station.. It located off Hwy 401 and Hwy 1010. Other place especially out in Washington and Oregon advertise the price..
Worst place are the RV parks, Uhaul and some Tractor supplies. you got a call to ask as some charge for full tank no matter how much you need.
If you're in areas that have Menards (large hardware stores like Lowe's), they often can fill tanks and motorhomes.

Hey Tom! You forgot to mention the 80% rule which was something we learned on our very first fill. We filled in colder weather at the Williams KOA. We filled it full. finished our trip went back home to Phoenix. We lost fuel we paid for (Pretty damn high at a KOA if you ask me) due to expansion. The over pressure device allowed a purge to relieve the pressures in the tank. Basically I filled up in a colder climate and moved to a hotter one. So a very important thing is not to overfill your tank! Now Propane systems are my least knowledgeable area (I'm right with you on all the Electrical (DACs haha)).
But propane: yea this is my one important thing I've learned: don't overfill, climate can play a major roll in the fill level of the propane tanks...

If I on the road I usually stop at Love's or Flying J.
You didn't mention that exchange 20lb tanks such as the ones you showed, are only refilled to 15 lbs, and you are paying a lot per gallon or pound for the propane. The main reason to swap your 20 lb tanks is if you have ones that are due for reinspection and cannot otherwise be refilled, the exchange companies will simply reinspect them and refill them.

I am a newb but I've had great service at 2 boat dealerships.
Thankfully your motorhome no longer uses propane, just your truck camper.
