  • We were very close to a catastrophic RV generator failure with our Cummins Onan RV generator 😬
Fortunately, Tom caught it in the nick of time while performing some routine maintenance items. Many RVs have generators, and all of them need some occasional TLC to keep running properly!
In our new video, Tom tackles all the big maintenance tasks required for a Cummins Onan 10k (same for 12.5k) QD quiet diesel generator. We changed the Oil, Fuel Filter, Air Filter, Belt, Valve Latch, Spark Arrestor, and Coolant.
Thank you for watching our videos!

You are amazing no fear. Thx for sharing as you saved a lot in labor costs and no telling other mechanics costs. I’m very impressed

Hey Tom, thank you for doing this video. We just purchased a 2011 Monaco Diplomat and I too noticed there weren't many service videos about the 10 Kw generator. I had no idea how difficult it was going to be to do the fan belt change. That was an eye opener. Thank you for preparing me mentally for that one. The entire video was very helpful. I'm also going to hold off ordering parts until I see what's actually under the sheet metal. Didn't realize getting the correct part numbers might also be a challenge. Thanks again!!!

I enjoyed watching this. A year ago, I did all except the soot plug and fan belt.
One point that was missed here is the radiator. Mine was extremely dirty - I would estimate there may have been a pound of dirt and dust trapped in the radiator fins. This required lots of water flushing, but I finally used a special pressure washer 90 degree tip and hit it all from underneath. Do not get close to the fins!

Looks like you dodged a bullet replacing that belt! Another great maintenance video that probably saved you hundreds of dollars over taking it to the dealer

I think Peter and John would cringe at how clean you keep that genset :)

Lol, you are probably right! Although most of that dust is their fault as we met them out on a dry lake bed! Lol

Tom how did you know the belt was in need of replacement since it's so hard to see and inspect? What year is your generator and how many hours on it? I have an Onan 10K in a 2013 Newmar mountain Aire. I do all my own maintenance also, but so far have not checked on the belt or changed coolant. It was new to me in 2020. Think I'll take a deeper dive now that I've seen you do it. Thanks for the video!

Its almost impossible to know but time is a biggie, they say around 1500 but this gen has almost 4000 on it and i dont think it had ever been done. Since its in the back its gotta get super hot because all the hot air gets sucked right over it.

I would downsize that generator to 5kw extra space dedicated to 48v batteries maximize solar on the roof and use a
DC to DC charging in the generator only as backup

USE A ADJUSTABLE WRENCH THE CORRECT WAY, LIKE A PIPE WRENCH , ONLY ONE-WAY !!!!!

I know, easy to criticize and i do it too, but then when i get into it and just want to get it done sometimes slip....however i am pretty good about it if i really need to put force on something using the right tool the right way.... because I have learned the hard way why not, lol. But hey its my stuff and my mistake is my problem.

What would that same gen service cost if done by a mobile mechanic? X hours times x $ per hour plus parts and materials.

Would be alot for sure, the belt alone is a few hours so prob upwards of $600 or more
