- Straight from the hospital to the podcast: Tony Hawk and Jason Ellis recount a bad day at the ramp. This show is much different than the others, but it had to be done. Like, describe, ice and elevate.

Tony Hawk @tonyhawk
Jason Ellis @wolfmate - Sport
Get well soon Birdman. I broke my Tibia (bad) in my 40's skating , when the nurse looked at me and question why I was still skating at 40 the only come back I had was" Tony Hawk still skates". Don't let them take that excuse away.
I used that same answer when I shredded my knee a few years ago. I'm 46 now... and still love to skate. I can't do what I used to do (or ANYTHING like what these dudes do), but I've loved the sport since my first Variflex in the 80's...
God. I hope Tony sees this. Because I have said similar, and now I know a LOT of us has said this. That's good shit.
I said the same to a family member or someone and they're like "he's Tony Hawk" you're not hahaaa...skatings the best thing I've ever done, and see no stopping anytime soon at 43..
Oh boy this comment made me tear up 😿
I was skating a spot recently (I'm 27) and a lady rolled up to chew me out telling me I'm too old to be skateboarding. I shrugged and told her:
Stay rippin', rippers 🤙😎
man.. talk about vulnerability & perseverance. I’ve looked up to this dude and his morals for over 20 years. The fact that the #1 skateboard legend is talking about getting back on the board as soon as he can, but with his family in the front of all priorities as well. Such an inspiration.
Love the emotion that was shown through this episode. Get well soon Tony!
Well said. I feel the same
This was a heavy one... you could hear the emotion in Tony's voice. I have a huge amount of respect for both of these two. Can't wait to see Tony skating again soon.
This started as a podcast and turned into a friend being there for a friend when he is not in the best place mentally
I've had these with my by Kyle
@@thecherrysviewthecherrysvi3187 yeah these conversations are important
If I break anything, I would like a friend just like Jason Ellis.
I'd be a bit bummed if i broke something and no one filmed it.
Tony for my 10 year old aspiring Park/Vert daughter, I shared your accident with her when we were walking to school. Her reaction was, 'dude that sucks, but he'll still skate. Maybe not a 900 or Mctwist, but he'll still hit some airs, he's Tony Hawk, he skates for love.' I was awed by her comments. I'm a 49 year old dad, and though I skated, she has surpassed me and I cringe with every slam, but she gets up, laughing most of the time, but sometimes there's tears. You, Lizzie, Sky and everyone who have had horrific slams the past couple years have inspired her that you get up. You rule dude. You're so humble. Anyone who thinks you keep going out of arrogance or greed don't understand the love you have just to skate.
Watching Tony express the weight of his responsibility to himself, his family is very heavy. The idea that he is bummed out for everyone involved shows the amount of empathy he has, and always has had. He was raised right, and he is raising his family, and friends right. Your fans are behind you 100%. Be well, and we will see you down the road.
The tight bond between you 2 is what makes this the #1 Podcast Hands down! We are all going 2 be bummed 4 sure not being able 2 see your skilllz at work, Godspeed on your Healing Tony...
You saved skateboarding a few decades ago. Skateboarding saved me in 1985. I thank both of you.
That cut at 24:40 when he starts to talk about the skip in his heart is concerning I hope the hawks all good
Yea what’s up with that ?
Not trying to play Dr CZcamss over here- but he said he got some tests done 5-10 years ago for it. Heart murmurs are actually not too uncommon, and can be for all sorts of reasons.. even certain meds can cause them. I have one and it didn’t happen til ab 5 yrs ago when I was 25, and it’s hereditary. My issue is it causes a racing called Supraventricular Tachycardia- and sometimes I pass out. They did all these tests- put me on a very low dose of meds and told me absolutely no cocaine use 😂 and I’m good to go.
Anyways- long story short- if they do all the tests and blood work and there aren’t any symptoms, then ppl can live just fine w murmurs or irregular heart beats. A lot of ppl have them and even don’t realize. Again, not saying that’s the case here, just sounded like he already had some tests previously and has had an eye on it before now.
Lol, literally what im searching the comments 4. So random to leave that first bit in, then cut it. 🤔
Jason’s reactions in this are priceless… He’s so legit worried about his friend. Get well soon Tony!
This was heavy. I could hear in his voice how he's feeling...the array of emotions. I'm sorry this happened to you, dude, and we're wishing you a full and speedy recovery.
Ellis is an amazing friend. He’s got an amazing side of therapeutic counseling in him. Validating Tony’s experience while also keeping it real and staying grounded is a hard line to walk, Ellis did amazing with this. Love to the both of y’all, and major love and healing vibes to the birdman
You can see the pain and frustration in Tony's face. I'm sure you'll mend and better than the average person. Just take your time to heal bro and you'll be shredding in no time.
Just to add, I feel this is going to be an iconic episode to the podcast series. I think the best thing Tony, is to help via the podcast to discuss your struggles and I think it will transcend to your fans/audience and help them overcome difficulties as you are 🙌
I only heard about this on the Nine club live last week, nothing in the news in the UK. Granted I don't have any social media like Twatter or Instagratification. Tony, you're such a proud man and we are all so proud of you and what you've accomplished in your life. You've inspired so many and you will inspire many, many more. We love you and wish you a safe and full recovery.
Twatter 😂😂
Twatter made me spit out my drink 🤣
@@cesarmoore7996 Sorry for your loss mate! 🤭
@@Scruffy-Janitor I thought Instagratification was a smarter joke, oh well... 😏
Man this one sure hits in the chest. I hadn't skated much for ten years after having two ankle surgeries, got back into it and felt exactly as Ellis described. It was like "Oh, THAT'S why I've been miserable". Started getting back to it, broke the same ankle again. And found out my shoulder is fractured. This past week, I had just gotten out of the hospital from having a bone graft and plate put in my ankle and *that day* saw that Hawk broke his femur. So this is indeed quite inspirational, particularly for me right now. Ellis seems like a very good friend too. Get well soon, Birdman. Never give up!!
Tony you are an inspiration to all us old guys, if you can bounce back from this and a broken pelvis you are a true WARLORD! Never stop and never surrender!!
Hope we get to see the Hawk fly again before too long. Tony's story is absolutely inspiring and hits deep for me. Right before my 50th birthday last year, I broke a vertebrae in my back and my life was very nearly radically changed forever if there had been 50% more compression on the bone. I wish I could say that it was from trying a McTwist from a drop-in. My break occurred from the most mundane of experiences: walking down a set of stairs. It was a very scary, very traumatizing injury. Getting up out of bed was the worst of ordeals. I think I'm still affected by the traumatic physical suffering of just standing upright and walking to and from the bathroom. So many things you take for granted when you are healthy really become starkly outlined going through such an experience. The point is, you can hurt yourself doing the most ridiculously banal, basic things you do during a day in your life. Your life can be altered in a moment.
I still get emotional thinking of how it felt, lying in my bed in the hours after my accident, wondering how my life and those of my loved ones may be forever affected by my injury, and whether or not I would ever be as whole as I was before it happened. It was a personal, emotionally harrowing experience. All I could think about at the time is it's not about what happened, or how you did it to yourself, but how you recovered and picked yourself back up, how you learned from the experience. That's how I got through the worst of it. I'm just saying, I have an inkling of the sort of emotional place that Tony is in during this podcast session. It is absolutely a heavy situation. You really can't understand it until you have gone through the crucible of such a serious injury. From what I hear in this podcast, he is asking the right questions, weighing the appropriate responses, and hopefully he will continue to give himself the necessary time he needs to heal and re-evaluate the things he needs to especially from the other side of it when he heals up.
Tony, you could've hurt yourself doing something as simple as walking down some stairs but you didn't, you hurt yourself pursuing something that is the essence of who you are, something that you love and have been a passionate advocate for your entire life. You are showing us perfectly how to pick yourself up after an incredible fall, how to remain focused on what's personally important and meaningful, explaining how the lesson was learned from a major mistake and how not to repeat that same mistake in the future, and inspiring many. Do what you need to do to heal and know that you will come out of it all much stronger than you ever would have believed. The Hawk will soar again.
This video was one of the most real things I’ve ever seen in skateboarding. The humanity and vulnerability shine through in Tony’s words. As an “old man” that skates, this hits right in the heart. Thanks Tony for being an inspiration, even when you’re down.
Broooo, what champs, both of you! Tony for obviously being the war lord you are, but also Ellis for the support role, to know when to push a friend, when to ease back and when to talk colonoscopy! BIG UP! Get well soon Mr. Hawk!
Dude, thanks for all the music and good vibes ❤️

they say skaters have a big pain threshhold but by golly. good spirits help to heal
I saw Tony in like 88 at a skatepark in Iowa. He was hurt and rumor had it he wasn’t gonna get on the vert that day. He knew that was what everyone wanted to see. He manned up and put on a show. He is a true showman…
Broke my femur just 3 months ago. Had never broken anything in my 13 years of skating. It can happen to the best of us. Wishing for a speedy recovery birdman
We can all sense how emotional Tony is about the whole experience. I am glad that he had many long time friends there to help him at that moment.
Man just hearing him talk how that guy got his leg in place made me cry.
Hope you recover as soon as possible Tony.
Much love and regards from Croatia
Tony Hawk may be the humblest legend to ever be. Literally so badass, level-headed, and still a great role model. It takes work and yet he makes it look like he’s just got it all together. Well done Birdman
Goddamn that was a heavy episode. And worth listening to. Tony Hawk, Jason Ellis, and the rest of the Bones Brigade have been such an inspiration to me ever since I started skating 35 years ago, and they still inspire me to this day. Thanks to all of you old and new school skaters who are doing for the love, passion, and joy.
I wish you a speedy recovery Tony, and I know you'll be back on the board again.
Skaters get back up. it's burned into us. every fall, you don't give up, us skaters get back up.
So pulling for you Tony..I'm middle aged and still kicking it out there --we still want to move, thrash, get out there..I am wishing healing thoughts and prayers....You will find a new normal and be back at it again... We still 💗 you!
Story time:
I'll always have Tony Hawk to thank for getting me into modern skateboarding at age 6. I first stepped on a skateboard when I was 4. A replica CAL-240 in bright green plastic from the 1970's that somehow made it all the way to 1998. Two years later, Neversoft released Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 on PC. I spend the entire winter in Toronto playing that game. Everything I thought possible on a plastic skateboard was blown beyond my wildest imagination. "Wait a second" I remember saying, "people can actually do this stuff!?"
The next year in 2001, when spring had sprung, my uncle presented me with my first real skateboard - a Vision Psycho Stick with all the fixins. Rails toe and heel side, and a nose and tail bone. I was... confused. My uncle rode in the 70's and 80's, but I literally didn't know what I was looking at. The board was massive for me at the time and weighed a ton. It had these gigantic tracker trucks I'll never forget with wheels which to me (now a THPS disciple) were comically large. When I was ten I gave the board away to a friend thinking I was doing him a favour, but now it's probably sitting in his parent's garage still.
Years later, I'm 27, I still skate, I've been at it for longer than any other hobby aside from ice skating and taking dumps. It fills me with more satisfaction and brings me more joy than almost anything else I do. I'm still riding comically large skateboards whose designs were only popular in the 1980's (shoutouts to John Lucero). I still ride with rails on the sides. They still weigh so much that kids get confused when they pick up my setup. Sometimes though, when I'm feeling nostalgic, I pick up a nice Birdhouse popsicle shape (Lizzie's lately), grab my walkman mp3 player and load up some Guerrilla Radio.
Turn that shit up, Birdman. 🔥🤙
Such a powerful episode! Tony your a legend man, appreciate the honest emotions Jason your a stud mate!
Love you, Tony. Praying you have a quick and full recovery
Love you Tony. ❤ I had the gnarliest injury of my life at 45. Basically shattered my knee. Three years later and I'm skating more and possibly better than ever. Birdman's got this. No question.
"Are you filming me?"
"Uh, ya"
"Why?"
"Because I thought you'd want it"
Hahahahah
The idea that Tony feels bad for those that were there to witness the injury makes sense to me, it’s so heavy, but this will end by those people being super inspired by the come back. Be sure to document the comeback.
I've sprained ankles, knee, torn ligaments, herniated discs, broken tibia, but the worst pain in my life has been kidney stones.
Tony is a mad man he’s such a inspiration to everyone and you can tell he has such a big heart ♥️ and feels likes he owes people a good time and does not want to be a bother anyone he love his sport and it going to be a great day when he get back on the bored to skate also going to be a sad but well deserved day when he decides to hang up his bored he is the man that lives his dreams
Is this a pun, bored? Because the board your looking for is here. Board. Not tired with nothing to do, which will be Tony in retirement, hence my question??
We can see the depression man, we love you Tony! You will never let anyone down!
Get Well soon Tony. You are an incredible inspiration. Praying for a quick healthy recovery. Thank you for what you do. Can’t wait for the Doc!
Bro I’d watch Tony Hawk just pump and do lip tricks on a mini ramp. Any footy of Tony is fuel to keep pushing that plank.
Ellis showed real interview chops in this one. A friend, hurt and down and dealing with legit family stuff same time. GREAT EPISODE
Wishing you a speedy recovery Tony.
Good thing you have mates like Ellis to help you through.
Keep the revs up
Great episode, Guys...As a 54 year old myself, you'll be back our there! And, Ellis, you're an Awesome friend!
To see the guy who is a literal god of skateboarding be so vulnerable and honest and emotional was fucking amazing to see, id be happy just seeing Tony roll down into a ramp again! The love between him and Jason is dope
Much love and respect
the pain in tony's voice as he articulates the flurry of thoughts and concerns going through his mind makes me sad, it makes me want to encourage him. he's being so hard on himself. good on ellis for being so supportive.
All of the love and good vibes Tony you're an absolute inspiration. Thanks for sharing your story. Jason you truly are an amazing friend. Both are you are legends to be looked up to. Much love
Seeing him furious and sad he has to go to movie premiere with a crutch, is the exact same body language and attitude when he was a little kid getting second at a contest. His passion for his life and skateboarding is so admirable and this is why everyone loves Tony Hawk.
I feel your pain Tony.... I’m in my Fourth week of breaking my right leg. Three weeks with a external fixator. Then surgery a week ago. They are telling me six weeks until I can put weight on it. God be with you and a fast recovery. I’m 51 and have really just come to the realization how much people depend on you and how much more painful it is when you can’t help them....🙏
Smoke lots of weed and eat rso
Get well soon BIRDMAN , Ellis your a good friend .
Love you guys
I have a story about why videos like this matter. Danny Way jumped out of a helicopter onto a vert ramp and I think he tore a ligament in his shoulder. But instead of calling it a day what he said was “I’m going to land this trick before this shoulder stiffens up”. This helped me so much when I was prepping for dropping in on a half pipe and doing the knee slides from sitting on the coping and standing on the platform for confidence. I severely twisted my ankle. But instead of giving up I made my first vert drop-in ever a few minutes later and totally changed my life. Thank you Danny Way. And for these words thank you Tony Hawk
51 this week. Broke my Tib-Fib last May playing hockey. No weight for a month, titanium rod in Tib, 4 screws. Back on the ice in 18 weeks, back playing games in 21. You got this!
I'm nearly 39, my son rides a scooter, I skated and then fruit booted for a bit so I can't rag on my boy...I even put new grips wheels and grip tape on his scooter for his birthday.
Half an hour ago I burst into my kids room and told them the hawk had badly broken his leg and my boy was devastated. I never skated vert or ramps in general but I could watch a hawk DVD and be pumped enough to get up and go for a skate. Your a legend. I'll await your greatest comeback... But if it's unattainable, I'll also fully support that. You have nothing left to prove
"I dont do it for the glory, it just feeds my soul... It makes me happy like nothing else"
Profound and precise.
Man Tony, as a 52yo skater I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this interview and how encouraging it is to hear that you struggling with the same family worries that I do. They are always concerned for me, and like you, I have to find a way to respect their worries while still doing what brings calm to my life. It’s hard to balance that need for self-expression with what our loved ones want… but keep trying. I appreciate your candidness in this interview, and the courage it took to do it. You ARE an inspiration to a ton of people, even when you are injured… maybe even more so injured. You and Jason have done an excellent job with this podcast - keep up the great work! Wishing you a speedy and full recovery!
Tony always been inspiring but this one takes the cake. I have nothing but love for the Birdman (and Jason too :D) His way of fighting through life and adversity is out of this world legendary. Mad respect.
I can’t wait to see Tony back on a board again. I’m 44 & I still skate & I plan on never stopping. He’s always been an inspiration.
Man, I have so much more respect for Tony than I ever have. What makes him great isn't his ability to skate, it's what he spreads to the world in his love and humility. I see why he's such a great skateboarder though. He clearly puts a lot of pressure on himself to perform at the highest level, whether it's on the board, or his relationships. You're a good man, Tony. We need more good people like you in the world. Praying for a quick recovery.
im laid up with ligament damage in my ankle, had the op, and am waiting till i can skate again. fuck injuries
I feel this podcast better then the other ones. Coming back after an injury is hard. What even harder is knowing you have a family to support and skate injury can and will take away from providing for them. That hurts more then the injury it's self.
Hoping for a healthy and fast recovery for you tony.! Jason is definitely the guy to talk to about this. Crazy the depression that comes when you get hurt and can’t perform your art.
Yea it's rough. Im a 3d artist and I hurt my finger a while back which resulted in some nerve damage.. nothing major but I couldn't really do much for a while there which was very frustrating
I'm 32 years of age. Tony and Reynolds are my inspiration for skating into my 40's, 50's, etc. It's in my blood like it is your guys'. I have endless thankfulness, love, and respect for Tony and I tip my hat off to where he is mentally, just days after this injury. Inspirational is an understatement. If Tony is out there spinning 5's in the next year, beautiful. If Tony is doing shuv its on flat and dropping in on 5 foot quarter pipes. I'm equally as juiced and inspired. He's proven himself to be the fuckin man time and time again. Wish him a safe recovery and I look forward to seeing the first time he steps foot on that board!
This is why I’m subscribed. This is the content we need
Inspirational is an understatement, wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery.
Tony , hope you heal quickly !!
Much love and respect my brother !

Tony could possibly be one of the kindest and most thoughtful people out there. Wish you a speedy recovery!
This is so raw. Thanks for letting us in to this. Godspeed for your recovery. Praying this suffering produces something beautiful for you.
Rest up legend…. Looking forward to your movie doco…..love your work…love the podcast
Hang strong birdman! Wishing all the best recovery! Tough as all hell to come through the way you have and showing yourself right after such a stressful and scary time. All the thanks for the skating inspo, the music, and the mems
Bro, hearing tony so emotional is heartbreaking. Heal up legend! We all love you!
You will be skating again tony! I know its not a femur but i snapped my arm skating and 2 years later im doing it better that i did before the injury, still rock climbing too! Stay positive! 👊
Super stoked you both came back here so quick and talked about this! Heal well.
You got this Tony. Take your time and do what’s right for you and your family. Your fans will always be here. Love the podcast.
It's so considerate of Tony to look at how this injury affects others, but I appreciate Jason's counterpoint perspective in support of Tony getting back out there, when the time is right, on his own terms and not focus too much on others' expectations. Into my 50s now, many of the hardest times I've had with the rest of the things in my life, have been while I've been unable to skate due to injury. I NEED my body to work so I can earn a living, but more than that, skateboarding is part of my personal process and without it that process is at best incomplete and at its worst, dysfunctional. Also, colonoscopy: not so bad. Get well soon.
Tony needs to start doing those got milk ads again!!🤣🤣
Take your time and stay strong! 🙏🏼
Conversations like this one are why you are an inspiration for everyone, not just skateboarding. I could not imagine what it's like to go through an injury like yours. But you show us what it takes to believe in something and push through pain and doubt. You are one incredible human being. So inspiring! Get better, and I hope to see you back on your board soon!
"He put it together so sturdily..." Hits slightly differently when you know the followup... Massive love to you both.
We got that you are an amazing human, with both drive and respect for your family. The fact that your mind goes anywhere other than your own self preservation is impressive enough, let alone concern for those watching. You're a stud buddy!
Feel better Birdman!! Also, that whiskey collection is EPIC. OFBB, M10, EHT, Booker 25th!!! Love you both!!
I have such respect for both you dudes. This dialogue was heartwarming. Love
Firstly sorry about the hurt suffered get better soon Mr Hawk. As a 61 year old who started skating at 45 years old and had to stop skating at 60 due to injury for me this was a good conversation to listen to. I hope you get better soon.
Watching you 2 is such a good feeling during these tough times. Im glad Tony is better and healing well. Thank you Jason What a great solid dude and for sharing all this.
This is skate... you get hurt, you get up, ellis is right. It's in the game. Go to rhe premier and show what is it all about. Can't wait to see the documentary. Absolute legend. Abraços de Portugal!
love you guys, so happy to have an episode
Thank you Tony & Jason for everything you've done for skateboarding and allowing all of us to stay kids for the rest of our lives and passing the stoke on to our kids. Speedy recovery birdman you'll be back on the ramp in no time! Big props to Ellis for keeping the smile on Tony's face! Great episode.
I've listened to millions of recordings of words, books, podcasts, etc. This is the most real and heartfelt recording I've ever heard. I almost feel uncomfortable listening and "being in the room" With these two gentlemen. You can absolutely feel the love and vulnerability and history between these men. I found this podcast today and have been binging episodes all day, I already peaked with the Rodney special. But, this... is another level.
Thank you for sharing your lives with us. Wow
This deserves so many more views. I love the raw emotion of this interview and how vulnerable and transparent Tony has been about his career as he gets older
Good luck on a quick recovery. I look at you as like a Superman. It’s really wild to see something like this happen to you. I’m sorry you’re going through this
Thanks for sharing this moments Tony! keep on getting better! Fuerza!
Been enjoying this channel. Appreciate the honest and direct attitude about this situation. Wishing you the best for full recovery. Keen to see Steve-O with you guys when u get round to it...
Super emotional episode, really cool to see this side of yall. I was born in 97 so I grew up in the generation of tony hawk pro skater, played and loved the games and went out and got a target spongebob board shortly after playing. Although I didnt fully commit to skating in real life I played almost every skate game that came out growing up. Last year I saw a video and told myself why don't I just skate instead of watching other people do this and I am so glad I did. A year later to today I skate as much as humanly possible for me. I want to make it to my 50s 60s and even 70s still able to skate and it is so inspiring to see someone like you who took the right path in your diet and exercise routine to where you can at your current age still skate and have a great time like I do at 24 is exactly what keeps pushing me to make similar decisions that will lead to a desirable outcome like that. And even with this injury I can see how determined you are to push through this and still be there for everyone else in your life is so amazing. So glad to watch the podcasts and see the real side of you. I watch lots of 80s skate movies and clips and love all the things you did in bones brigade. Animal Chin was a favourite of mine, I just love the vibe and how you guys had the coolest settings to go skate at. Love that style yall had back then. And if yall read this I got so much love for Jason Ellis, the crazy bastard. Hope your recovery is quick and you go back to doing the things you enjoy!
This one had me tearing up. Superman without a doubt! Love you Tony, can't wait to see you back on your board. I suck and I'm still learning but if you're not giving up I wont either.
Watching you deal with the hand you haven’t been dealt and staying positive is more inspirational than landing any trick… don’t ever stop.. and the friendship you two have is the best, don’t ever let that go either..
WoW! So heavy! Birdman has been a hero to me for 35 years. When I heard about this last I was sick! I wish you the best Tony, in life and recovery! Your love for the sport is unrivaled is any sport! Good luck! Well wishes !
Been waiting for this!
Love you Tony. Thank you for sharing this with us and being so candid and open. It made me respect ya even more!
I've skated vert since 79. I quit in 92 when my daughter was born. I got with the boyz about 9 years later in a pool and was getting my tricks back when I fell and ripped my ACL. I get what these guys say about it being your soul feed because I watch this stuff along with many other skate videos to this day. It is truly who I am and will be till the day I die. Skateboarding is by far, the best time of my life! best friends I've ever had, and something a non skater will NEVER understand!
Such a moving and motivating podcast, a true legend of the sport, who has done so much for so many, and continues to inspire all of us, Wishing you a full and speedy recovery Tony
thank you for this episode!
Huge effort doing this podcast mate. Glad to hear you're on the up and up! Jason reminds me so much of that mate we all have who makes us feel full metal when we have a stack! I broke my back 10 years ago and have the same kind of crew supporting me. Its special and truly something we should never take for granted. Get better soon legend!
