    They say great persons don't see themselves as better than others, and this Von Braun anecdote supports that notion: At a very quiet Tuscaloosa, AL airport terminal in 1967 I found myself standing next to another person, also standing alone, waiting to meet persons arriving on the same Southern Airways flight as I. I recognized him as Werner Von Braun! Being a college sophomore who had recently earned a Commercial pilot's license, I introduced myself and we engaged in a 20-minute conversation, mostly about airplanes. What was fascinating was how totally focused on me he was, as if I were the only other person in the world! He was delighting in teaching me interesting facts (one I recall being about the wing of the amazing new F-4 Phantom fighter). What a genuine, nice man!

    Fun fact about the N1: When developing the NK33, they kept dealing with combustion chamber instability (stuff blowing up) since it was essentially the first real closed-cycled engine. They wasted a lot of money this way, because they didn't perfect the technology in the testing facility, but they exploded a couple of rockets instead. When they finally did a test launch during which the N1 didn't explode, the USSR had lost interest and the N1 program was discontinued.
    This is also why more than 20 years later, those old engines were discovered in some storage facility and they were more advanced than anything that NASA had. Also, some N1 shells were used as stables after the program had been aborted.

Amazing how art and science can combine to give a possible solution for earth's problems. Let's hope the next president has the vision to see that these two disciplines are valuable enough to fund for the future of the human race.

    Good old unsymmetrical dimethyl hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide, the hypergolic nightmare fuel for the Titan II’s I worked around 50 years ago. At least you can always be sure the candle will light when you push the button. It was always a little creepy going out to the launch tube to do maintenance, knowing all that fuel and oxidizer was just a small thickness of aluminum away from you, not to mention the biggest thermonuclear warhead in our arsenal.

      Chuck Yeager talks about this in his first autobiography, and accuses Crossfield of not bothering to study the aircraft. Apparently Yeager had planned to check him out in the systems and Scotty declined and said that he only needed to have a manual. Yeager remarked "Well, you look at a guy like that and say 'See you around'."
      Later, Crossfield lost utility pressure and crashed through a hangar wall. Yeager said that if he had bothered to learn about the systems, he would have known how to deal with the failure.

Disney was great for understandable science lessons. The lesson on chain reactions using mousetraps and ping-pong balls was chilling especially for me growing up in a north NJ suburb of NYC. This was very interesting. If you do this again, I think a space shuttle type of vehicle capable of reaching lunar orbit would be fun. You could have a reusable lunar lander stowed in the cargo bay so aerodynamics wouldn't be an issue for that. Please keep these coming.

    • @johnfrancisdoe1563
      @johnfrancisdoe1563 Před 6 lety +1

      angc214 This video was about a space shuttle style main vehicle. According to von Braun, his plan was to use such a spaceplane vehicle as the lunar lander and Earth return vehicle. So not a small lander in the cargo bay, but an actual space shuttle landing on the Moon.
