- After building a Kerbal Scale version of this with Amy Shira Teitel I scaled things up to a realistic scale version and tried to see whether I could safely orbit and return to Earth.

I do believe the greatest expansion in brewery count was when the first brewery was built. An increase of 0 to 1 is an undefined percentage.
Well, it increases 100%, doesn't it?
Technically 100% of 0 is 0, so a 100% increase would stay at 0.
Going from 1 to 0 would be a 100% decrease though.
0 is sure a weird number
Or it would be Not A Number, which happens whenever 0 is somewhere in the denominator of an equation.
Let's see:
0 * x = 0, x can be any number
Therefore, x=0/0. Thus, 0/0 can be any number. However, I'm not sure how to put that into 1/0...
+coryman125 You have earned the "Nerdiest CZcams Comment I Have Read Today" award. Congratulations :D
I'm still waiting for a 'Kermit Space Program' mod that replaces the kerbals with kermit the frog, and he does his arm flail when in motion.
Get me an old WWII Flamethrower shipped to my doorstep and I'll do it :'D
hilarious:) . would if it didn't get me on a watch list, lol. But seriously, why hasn't someone else thought of this? I cant really find mention of it elsewhere. my brother was over and saw me playing, mentioning 'it would be funnier if it was kermit the frog. do you have a mod for it?' sadly i had to say no.
OMG that'd be awesome!!
We must make this happen bois
Kermit is a little high strung. I'm not sure if he'd pass the flight physical. Unless....could we make an experiment out of him?
I feel like, with this stream, Scott became a true US citizen:

Hey Scott, The von Braun Ferry is a canard aircraft. The elevator is on the front wing (the canard). Putting your elevator up front will give you a lot more pitch authority as well as allowing an extremely high angle of attack prior to stall. This is especially true if you couple it with elevators on the main wing. This will all allow you to slow your craft to below 250mph before hydrobreaking. In addition, if you add roll control to the canard, you can maintain roll control at high angles of attack and possibly correct some of your reentry issues.
George Washington was elected president in 1789, after the constitution was ratified. Previously, the closest thing the US had to an executive branch was a committee consisting of a representative from each state.
If I'm not mistaken he was elected to preside over said "committee"...(being one of the members, similar to the First Continental Congress). That's probably the source of the confusion.
BaseDeltaZero Thanks for clearing that up.
He was not, in fact, so selected. He served in both Continental Congresses, but neither presided over it nor served in the Congress of the Confederation. He did, however, preside over the Constitutional Convention. The first President of the Congress of the Confederation was Samuel Huntington, who was President of the Continental Congress when the Articles of Confederation were ratified. However, since the Congress of the Confederation was the same body as the Second Continental Congress, Peyton Randolph was de jure the first President.
It's a historically very interesting stream. It's from a time where people thought Tablet sales would rise forever and tablets would replace desktop computers and notebooks....
I am simple Kerbal, I see explosion, I hit the like button
"And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air..."
Yep, it sure does mention rockets. XD
Although NASA did some fine tuning on the F-1 engine and increased the specific impulse by 15%, so called it an F-1B. They went even further long after Apollo. They dreamed up an Ultra Heavy Booster by mounting 5 F-1B engines on a Saturn 5 first stage, then thought to mount 4 strap on liquid boosters EACH with 2 F-1B engines. 13 F-1B engines at a total Lbs thrust. (11,700 tons ) But shelved the whole thing because they lacked a payload that big.
Fun fact the first stage of the Ferry rocket would have had over three times the thrust of the Saturn V.
Patchuchan damm
Patchuchan
Albeit late, another fun fact:
The ferry rocket was development of the A12 design Von Braun has been working on since 1940, and would be brought finally to fruition in the Super Jupiter design, also called the Juno V later to be known as the Saturn A-1 with some changes.
I got chills seeing that rocket on the pad the first time. I had to get up and close my window.
Stability assist will slow rotation faster than any of the target modes because its not trying to steer you towards a target, its focusing directly on countering your rotation.
Just started your interstellar quest...boy do I have a ways to go haha
Crimson prepare to binge
I've watched that series about two times, it's awesome. savor it :)
That first rocket went N1 ;-)
In the biggest german Science-Fiction-series (Perry Rhodan) had a very similar design as their moonrocket, it was named STARDUST. It brought the Protagonist and his Crew to the moon, where they met aliens. Thats how the series started, and runs weekly as booklets continously since the 8th of September, 1961.
Yeah? That's interesting - I hadn't heard of that.
Gotta love Manley. America's favorite Rocket Scott!!!
Another advantage of launching near the equator is that it gives more options for orbits of different inclinations without the use of a plane change. While in GTO, a plane change isn't much of an issue, for LEO, plane changes can require large amounts of Delta V
what mod is used for extending and changing the the shape of parts? tweak scale only seems to make things bigger with the same side ratios

Talking about American Nuclear Reactors... Diablo Canyon in California got shut down due to a leak. Caused all kinds of power cost issues. So glad we don't have to deal with that(yay for expensive moves!). Now we're back to coal burners/one hydroelectric dam here in our area of Michigan. It's funny in this "space age" we've neglected the modernization of terrestrial energy sources. We have the tech, we just want to destroy our atmo instead....? I don't know. Loving this build though. Makes me want to get my rocket planes beyond orbit.
Coal burners are reliable, effective and relatively cheap even though they are dirty. Other comparable sources of power generation at this time are either just as dirty(oil, wood etc) , less reliable (wind turbines), less effective for greater expense (solar), or has a host of other problems (nuclear fission: generally unpopular with the mass public [thanks Chernobyl!], no convenient place to store long lasting lethal waste products, and safety concerns with long term usage).
Furthermore considering all space exploration in this current ''space age'' is fueled by good old fashioned chemical combustion (if not on a larger scale of complexity and size) I don't know why you should expect power generation to be much beyond that.
Also, read on the ITER project, it is an extremely promising step forward in tokomak nuclear fusion.
Hi Scott. Great graphics. Really nice job in bringing it to life.
Scott, when using the Offset and Rotate tools with snap enabled, you can hold the Shift key to make the increments smaller - instead of 15 degrees, it'll rotate the part by 5 degrees. It also allows you to offset parts wayyyyyyyy more than you'd normally be able to
Thats the best model of the 'Stardust' I've seen so far. Good job.
Scott your take off, lEO and landing made my day bless you mate ...lol
Brian May wrote and sang "In The Year of '39"
It wasn't Brian may from Queen who did the sound track for the original Mad Max film. It was an Australian composer who has the same name.

"a ton of neutrons" Imagine a literal ton of high energy neutrons being released. That'd be a really bad day.
Really bad.
Are there any other design proposals (NASA or otherwise) that you could take a look at, Scott? This is really fascinating.
hi +Scott Manley! i always follow your videos, i like the way u explain phisic and astronomy! I'm just wondering, which are the mods u are using in this video?! Thanks
what mods were used in this video? im seeing a cockpit that looks fairly similar to my dear beloved b-29 bomber :D
it says its the "heinkel he 111" cockpit but i cannot find the mod thread for it :( ...
also, 11:00 the printer joke XD
stuChris The He-111 cockpit is from SXT.
what about the terrain textures?
David Caplin Don't know. Might just be RSS Visual Enhancements.
Hearing Scott talk about a cat licking it's genitals was a nice surprise.
What is the mod for the coustum parts?

Space Poop. Compress it into nitrates and use it for reaction/station-keeping motor fuel. In a suit the same thing can happen. The Poop-jet module will make your EVA man look like a bubble-butted space monster, but-hey-who's looking?

thats a roll coupled instability, I believe... and did you not check empty tank stability on the glider ?
I remember a model by Revelle during that period. I may even have owned one. It's kind of fuzzy, being so long ago.

Btw, Bill Gate's folks have been investigating using molten salts for their system as well. They want to do fast reactor, so ditching lithium and fluoride to for chloride. They don't want to pump it around, though. They are just going to use it as a molten form in a fuel clad cell to off gas....well, potentially, they are very closed lipped and that was mostly just dreaming I think rather than a signal of a design departure.
Right now the design that is an MSR with the most promise is the guys at Terrestrial Energy. It is not a breeder, uses regular uranium and normal enrichment levels so has the least amount of technical risk of any MSR being developed currently.
Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t von Braun say there was going to be a fourth stage because he said the third stage would separate during reentry and the fourth stage would ignite during sea level altitude
Actually, the guy who made the Mad Max soundtrack was another Australian composer Brian May (RIP) . I've made the same mistake myself (as has a lot of others)
"I don't think you will ever see nuclear powered weapons"
Meanwhile in Russia..
I know this is an older video by now, but I am a huge history nerd, and I just had to address this. Scott's description of the Federalist Papers beginning at 8:30 is slightly off in the chronology.
July 4, 1776: The Declaration of Independence is signed
Nov 15, 1777: The Continental Congress adopts the Articles of Confederation
(The "First Constitution," so to speak)
Sept 3, 1783: The Treaty of Paris is signed, ending The American Revolutionary War
Feb 21, 1787: The Congress (under the "Articles,") approves a plan to hold
a convention in Philadelphia to revise the "Articles"
May 25, 1787: The Constitutional Convention officially begins
Sept 17, 1787: The Constitution is signed
Oct 27, 1787: The Federalist Papers appear in Newspapers for the first time
Jun 21, 1788: The Constitution is Ratified
April 30, 1789: George Washington inaugurated as first President of the United States
under the new constitution
Most people are surprised to learn that before the Constitution, there was no Executive Branch of government, and therefore no President. The closest thing we had was the president of the congress, officially "President of the United States in Congress Assembled." Eight Men served 1-year terms as president of the congress, beginning in 1781 with John Hanson.
The Federalist Papers were written to convince people to ratify the Constitution, well before Washington ever became President.
Also, at 9:25 the question was posed "Which was the first sovereign republic to voluntarily join the United States?" I believe the answer is the Republic of Texas, which was annexed in 1845, and became a State immediately. California became a territory of the US in 1848, after the Mexican-American War (which began as a result of the annexation of Texas, and the disputed borders between Texas and Mexico). California later became a state in 1850. California could be considered an independent Nation, because of the Bear Flag Revolt in June 1846, but as Scott said, it wasn't much of a republic. The revolt was overshadowed by the Mexican-American War, which began on May 13, 1846. Texas, however, had been its on country for years. It had its own currency, and five Presidents.
While Hawaii was sovereign, it was a Kingdom, not a Republic, and the Annexation of Hawaii was not voluntary, not by the natives anyway. White Americans had moved to Hawaii to grow sugar, but were hurt by a tariff in 1890, which made American sugar much cheaper. To get around the tariff, the American-born immigrants to Hawaii sought to join the US, and overthrew Liliuokalani, the queen of Hawaii.
The US Virgin Islands were not a sovereign nation when the United States acquired it. The US purchased the islands from Denmark.
What about the 14th state?
Granted, the 13 colonies had bigger fish to fry at the time, and New York still kept trying to claim the land, but Vermont had a functioning Republic government and declared themselves independent from both New York and New Hampshire during the Revolutionary War, and while always intending to join the Union, still held themselves separate until 1791.
Thanks, @skyfighter64
Actually Hawaii is under a strange form of hostile military occupation since 1898. We are technically at war with it since there has been no peace treaty and also no treaty of annexation. The Kue petition suggests that Hawaiians do not wish to be annexed. The act to annex it passed in the House and Senate of the United States does not have any effect on anything outside the borders of the contiguous United States, anymore than you could annex Paris by passing a law about it. It has to be done by treaty according to international law. Hawaii is a constitutional monarchy currently represented by a regency in the Hague, and it has been a part of the British Commonwealth since the Kamehameha government. So it has not been regularized and the legal fiction styling itself as the state of Hawaii is an illegal corporation which may be tried for war crimes under the Geneva convention.
Christopher Stube Being an "illegal corporation" is a vague accusation not triable in any relevant international court, also territorial divisions being "incorporated" is an oddity of US and colonial legal terminology. War crime international prosecution usually targets the leaders and soldiers involved, not the country they fought for. International legality of country changes comes from recognition or rejection by other states, not the circumstances of their history, hence how Nixon and Bush recognizing red China was the key thing causing them to legally take over China's seats in the UN etc.
@@johnfrancisdoe1563 If i stipulate your argument, than you should see if hostile occupying corporation not specified in US military code fits your bill.
Also, I just watched a video on it, they say the challenger incident was caused when an O ring failed and the solid rocket booster burned a hole into the giant orange tank, causing an explosion
THAT'S what causes the incorrect symmetry of control surfaces!!!??? OMG THANK YOU Scott!
Man you're sure obsessed with that space poop thing
I actually made a stock version of the original design of this.
I miss these.
Hey Scott, if you had to estimate, how many hours would you say you have in KSP, total? (Not including video editing)
That ending was a hell of a plot twist.
The first launch, Scott kept trying to turn, but had the SAS in prograde mode, so it went back to where it was.
Just letting you know that CZcams unsubscribed your channel automatically. I think that bug that is doing the rounds is true. Obviously subscribed again :)
I saw some of these mods, and immediately wanted to know more. I found out about some more KSP mods that had flown under my radar, and I was wondering if anybody had some mods for a somewhat old player who likes to have some old (actual missions) and new (planetary bases at higher tech levels and what not) mods to tinker with, as well as a good portion of realism.
What is your opinion of ablative laser rocketry?
What mod do you use for the engines?
NASA: "Hey, Scott, you have been invited to the ISS"
SCOTT: "Awesome, count me in!"
NASA: "There's no beer there"
SCOTT: "Ok, then... No!"
It's interesting that NASA does these "Challenges" when then could just as easily put out an SBIR/STTR for the work as well. Though I suppose this does get more people involved.
i've recreated that rocket on KSP, after Walt Disney's presentation of Man and the Moon with that old spacenazi. I'm glad great minds think alike
Squads newest Weekly Update, has a link to the Completed parts Porkjet had been working on. Its not an official 'update' in that sense but there's new content from squad that you/your subs might like to see.
Where can i watch Scott's live streams?
And Hawaii was annexed (lots of shady thing went on)
+James Vann yes, Hawaii acquisition was extremely shady.
James Vann Annexation is the process through which a sovereign state, or part of one, becomes a part of another sovereign state. This process can occur willingly, as in the case of the Republic of Texas, or not so willingly, as in the case of Hawaii.
Snaperkids I don't remember saying otherwise, but from what I've read it's more complex than that as Annexation tends to be used to describe take over though economic means as opposed to military and/or culture, but yes it can be willing or unwilling, and if I remember correctly the question was what sovereign republic willing joined, so the reason stated may be wrong, the point is valid, is it not?
James Vann Texas was the first republic to be annexed by the US (1845), but Hawaii was also annexed by the US (1898).
I was under the false impression you thought annexation was only done by force. My apologies
Snaperkids no problem I probably could have written it better, like saying forcefully annexed as opposed to just annexed

This video is entertaining on so many unintentional levels! For the Right Reasons!
Getting control surfaces to properly snap to wings is an problem as old as surfaces themself.
But did anyone EVER try to supply both with nodes meant for that?
Just wondering because that would take atleast 2 axis out of the mess and rolling a surface (if they didn't allow snapping of all 3) is definitely easier than messing with all 3 on a weird reference orientation.
Dazzleflage was a legitimate thing for ships. The Idea was to confuse observers as to the direction the ship was travelling, making it hard t o hit with naval guns.
one importan ting is that the launch site for the mision was not kenedy space senter

store the poop and use it for future radiation shielding. I don't mean just smear it over the outside of the ship. make a slurry then can eventually be used to Gerry people to and from Mars... alternatively or also it could also be used as fertiliser on Mars.
need to experiment with various cuisines to make the best martian fertilizer poop... I hope it's not kimchee...
why no roll? Did I miss something. I would think the wings would be trying to pitch over to the south, 90 degrees to your eastern trajectory? Unless those huge wings do no produce lift?

Space poop - using an IV drip would surely eliminate the need for pooping?
I've always been surprised by folks saying RO is harder than stock. It is only harder than stock if you are using stock parts and fuels. With real fuels it's just longer burn times in RO..
Maybe retrograde burn into the atmosphere turn it around and fly it as a subsonic plane... The wings are way to straight for supersonic flight..
4 years and we still don't know what to do with our spacepoops.

26:18 “Will I get high enough and fast enough?”
You said that Brian May of Queen also wrote the soundtrack to "Mad Max". No, he did not. Different Brian May. The Brian May who wrote the soundtracks was Australian, and died in 1997 at the age of 62. Here is his wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_May_(Australian_composer)

I've been meaning to make this comment for a long time, and everytime I see you go back and forth to the apoapsis to check it :)
Alltho you don't seem to get very frustrated, generally :)
