Star allies has so many underrated stage tracks, and you really brought out the best of this one!
I appreciate any love given towards Star Allies' soundtrack, as while it's not my overall favorite Kirby OST, I do admire its general style quite a bit.
Kirby Ice levels always have had such serene tracks.
Yeah. Whether it’s the energetic tones of White Wafers, the chilling winds of Old Odyssey, the wackiness of Overload Ocean’s Ice Cream Factory, or EVERYTHING ABOUT WINTER HORNS, and even this game, Kirby nails the snowy aesthetic.
Kirby Star Allies is such an underrated game. One of the best platform games ever made

All she needs is Kirby’s touch for righteousness…

You know, when people said that Star Allies is underwhelming….
In terms of story, I do see why. Immediately after Pon & Con’s first boss fight, you can’t befriend ANY boss after that. That was where the “boss becomes your friend” trend goes to die.
What should’ve been done to make the game more interesting, is if the player had the option to befriend the Mage Sisters one by one. Say you immediately befriend Francisca after her first fight, then you fight Flamberge WITH Francisca as your ally and special dialogue takes place with Francisca talking sense into Flamberge to no avail. One hothead boss fight later… Flamberge is your friend. You encounter Zan Partizanne, both Franny and Berge attempt to talk her out of the Jamba Heart’s influence. One Parmesan Cheese fight later… Kirby ATTEMPTS to cure her, but his friend ability isn’t strong enough, so Zan corrupts Franny and Berge, they become enemies again, AND THEN Zan brings down Jambastion! You befriend more bosses after that. Befriend Francisca and Flamberge again, defeat Zan and throw a friend heart, THIS TIME she befriends Kirby. Then, the fight with Lord Hyness begins with more special dialogue, but regardless, he uses the Sisters as sacrifices for the ritual, but upon defeating Void Termina the first time, the story immediately follows as Kirby and remaining friends go to save the Sisters again and finally cure Hyness, that rather then making a separate post-launch story mode!
This would’ve made the game’s plot all the more engaging, but no!
The rest of the game wants Kirby to be a total @$$hole from this point on to rest of the game…
Until Heroes in Another Dimension came out…
Talk about a waste of energy in plot…
Honestly, I don't see how the story is improved in any meaningful way by this idea. If we're going by the logic that Kirby's basic friend power can't convince certain people who aren't willing enough to be allies with Kirby, why would the Mages want to befriend Kirby at that point in the story? They still firmly believed in what Hyness was doing at that time, so it's really abrupt for them to join Kirby merely after getting their asses kicked once or twice. By the end of Heroes in Another Dimension, not only did Kirby have a much more powerful Friend Heart to use, but the Mages had also seen the pitiable state Hyness was in and were very distraught, thus making them more open to listening to Kirby's offer to help them.
I don't really see what was wrong with Star Allies' story to begin with. It's perfectly fine for the kind of game it is. The most they could've improved it in my opinion would be to foreshadow what the Mages and Hyness were rebuilding the Jamba Heart for a bit more. I do agree that the post-game story ideally wouldn't have been post-launch, though that's not exclusively a story issue.

I do see your point, but there’s still very little knowledge about what happened to Hyness and the Sisters, and how they came to be at this point. I searched from one background info piece to another, and I’m aware that they weren’t always a “mad group of cultists with no regard for life.” Their pursuit to madness happened when Hyness found the Jamba Heart and spreaded its influence upon his three disciples. They were sealed away for eons out of the fear of their powers. And let’s not forget that this happened after an intergalactic crisis that they helped resolve. So this tragedy occurred after that…
By the events of Star Allies, the corruption is still there, but haven’t fully taken its toll… yet… You have to admit that the events that happened wasn’t their fault and that they weren’t acting by their own free will. No one but the Void was in control of their actions. Franscisca and Flamberge are arguably two of the most hesitant. They’d rather spend time acting like normal girls than stalling Kirby. Zan, however, is the most irreversible due to her undying loyalty to Hyness, and she would follow him to no matter which end. But things go completely awry when Hyness decided to use the Sisters as sacrifices along with himself to bring Void Termina to life.
When the ending phases of Heroes in Another Dimension occurred, the corruption on everyone is seemingly irreversible… nothing else mattered to the Mage Sisters except they want Kirby dead… that point became apparent that there’s no light left within them. So the fight had to end. All the pain and agony that seized them just… ends… with Kirby’s new and more powerful Friend Heart… all in the blink of an eye.
Point being, I felt like the Sisters and Hyness should’ve been treated in a more sympathetic manner given what was done to them by Void Termina. The game never treated them as such until the end of HIAD…
On the surface, they do have an unquenchable bloodlust. But deeper… they’re souls trapped inside a dark fate they cannot escape… until Kirby came.
@@TomMooreT2S I don't believe the Mages' actions were _completely_ controlled by Void or the Jamba Heart; in fact, I'm not sure how much, if it all, the Mages were influenced by the Jamba Heart, since the game never explicitly states that they were corrupted by it at any point, nor do the heart shards ever physically enter their bodies like with Dedede and Meta Knight. Even with Hyness, before HiAD it seems less like the darkness forcefully took him over like with Dedede and Meta Knight and more like he let the darkness guide him of his own volition. One of his Pause descriptions has a quote where he starts to warn Zan that his heart might go crazy again, but then stops himself and says "never mind", indicating that he was starting to lose his sanity well before the Jamba Heart was unsealed. Anyway, the mages had troubled pasts and an undying respect for a man who was slowly going insane, so some degree of irrational or malicious thinking of their own will is extremely likely, but the Jamba Heart could've magnified that further as well.
Regardless of all that, I suppose I can understand your point of how waiting to reveal the sympathetic qualities of a character until the post-game mode could be seen as strange. However, that is by no means a trait exclusive to Star Allies; If you only played the Story modes of Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot or just never read the pause descriptions, you would never know that Sectonia and Haltmann were tragic villains at all. I also think that for befriending the Mages so early on to feel natural, the story (particularly the exact nature of each mage's relationship with Hyness) would need to be significantly rewritten. Maybe the Mages would openly doubt whether Hyness is doing the right thing, for example.

I’m also well aware of the tragic backstories of both Sectonia and Haltmann. But here’s another thing I don’t understand about the Kirby series as a whole. Its canonicity. There’s this guy called Meteorz; he has a series called “What is Kirby Canon?” He dives into Kirby lore in greater depth. I try to take in every detail of every piece of lore he explains, but even if I were to just play the games, the question is, how should I approach them? Played the story, bam! Done. Then, I jump into databases to get a better read on certain characters. But here’s where things get confusing. The events that are canon and non-canon. The devs openly admit that certain modes are deemed not canon to the series, but canon or not there are bits and pieces of lore that explain more. It’s like, which part of Kirby am I supposed to be in? Why didn’t the story explain things the first time around? I thought certain specific modes are just endurance tests for the player, but there’s more lore there? It’s all over the place and I don’t think I can keep up.
A similar situation is like that with The Legend of Zelda series in its chronology. Ok, you can simply say that each entry has no canon connection with each other, and that’s only half true. I always believed that Zelda only has one canon timeline while the others are expanded universes or some new timeline entirely. All of which have no canonical connections with each other, but canon in their own right. Where Zelda has issues with chronology, Kirby suffers with canonicity. I can’t piece together the story myself. So I just concluded to just speculate.
In the case of the Mage Sisters suffering corruption or not, maybe I’ve been playing too much Majora’s Mask and watched a little bit too much Lord of the Rings to piece together evidence of magic corruption.
@@TomMooreT2S If the boss descriptions in those non-canon modes aren't talking about some change or transformation the boss character goes under in that mode specifically, then it's just information about the character in general that would apply anywhere. That's how you can tell whether info in a non-canon mode applies to the main universe as well. If the boss in question only appears in that non-canon mode, that character probably does exist in the main canon in some form, but they just weren't fought.
I won't deny that there are definitely oddities in Kirby's storytelling methods in spite of how much I love Kirby's characters and lore. Hiding plot details in pause screens during specific boss fights is a strange way of going about things when you think about it, and while it makes sense why they wouldn't want to bombard players with a bunch of plot details they may not care about (since Kirby is ultimately a gameplay-first series at the end of the day), perhaps it wasn't necessary to hide quite as many story details as they did inside of extra modes or pause screens. Thankfully, with Forgotten Land, the optional descriptions are instead attached to collectable figures that aren't too hard to get. Not only is the text easier for players to find (while still being easily ignorable if so desired), but I also feel that the main story does a good job at telling the most essential details needed to understand the characters' actions. I expect that future Kirby games (that aren't remakes) will follow Forgotten Land's footsteps in that regard.

Weird request but please consider doing 'Shrine of Destiny' from Zelda's Adventure or Ganon's final boss theme from Wand of Gamelon, those songs are genuinely very catchy.
Man I wish Star Allies wasn't such a basic Kirby game and absolutely squandered all the huge potential it had. Its soundtrack is still banging though.
Did you play the DLC? I know it didn't fix the game for a lot of people but between speed-running Star Allies Go and playing through the Ultimate Choice on max difficulty and the Heroes in Another Dimension, I actually had a great time with the game.
