  • Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are unquestionably two of the most renowned English midfielders of all time, but who is the better player. Loyal representatives of some of the most successful and famed football clubs in the country as well as the Three Lions, they are true leaders and amongst the finest of their generation.

I didn’t include Paul Scholes in this video as I feel Lampard and Gerrard are more similar in playing style and therefore comparable. Also their careers began and ended at very similar times. Obviously Scholes was incredible but not the same type of midfielder.

I think Lampard is very underrated , his otherworldly goalscoring ability is almost to his detriment as people forget how good a passer, chance creator he was. He didn’t stand out as much as Gerrard but that’s because he was very efficient and did stuff under the radar. Check his chance creation and playmaking stats, they are above almost every midfielder.

And honestly he didn't standout as much cos he was far and away Liverpool's best player and Loserpool was easy to standout in cos they had some years where they had mid players, so obviously he was gonna standout.

      @Tonishog Před 7 měsíci +8

@@99BullD this is such a good point, Gerrard stood out more because he was the face of Liverpool, academy boy, Scouse born and bread etc. compared to lampard in a team full of more stars, and with a player like John Terry perhaps, who stood out more for those same reasons as Gerrard. @@TonishogLampard would have done much better assists and goals in that same team. More technical player, could control, create and pull off the unexpected when it’s needed. the goals he scored or created were mainly due to his own brilliance. he made his teammates, "big names", look better than they did. He worked with all players, any system, and still scored screamers and finals winning passes as standard.

I am a Gerrard fan, but I am LFC to the core. Lampard, is a fantastic player and if a CFC fan likes him more than Gerrard, then no problem. I don't actually see them as similar players. Gerrard was a true, old school, box to box player, who played multiple roles in midfield, with occassional forays into a 3rd or secondary striker roles. He was clearly faster, and stronger than Lampard, and he seemed to break up play in the middle amd lower thirds of the pitch more effetively. Lampard's strengthes were based on his intelligence, timing, and attacking prowess. He most certainly had a better passing game, he was an excellent tackler higher up the pitch, and I believe a more clinical, consistent finisher. The shame in Englands set-up is they didn't play to eithers strengths anywhere near enough.

Ever since Abramovich bought Chelsea, Liverpool and Chelsea have been forever linked together. The rivalry started at the end of the 02/03 season when Chelsea beat us to clinch a Champions League place, ever since then Liverpool and Chelsea have been right close together as rivals.
Then In January 2005 Mourinho wanted Gerrard, Gerrard then ironically scored an own goal in the League Cup final in 2005 which Chelsea won. We then played Chelsea in the 2005 Champions League semi finals which Liverpool won with the infamous “ghost goal”. Gerrard then put in a transfer request to Chelsea after winning the Champions League, then he re signed with Liverpool a few weeks later. In 2006 Lampard came second in the Ballon d’Or with Gerrard coming in third.
In 2007 Liverpool beat Chelsea again in the Semi Final of the Champions League on penalties. In the 07/08 season Torres scored his first goal for Liverpool against Chelsea (the club Torres would eventually go to in 2011). In 2008 Liverpool faced Chelsea yet again in the Champions League semi finals with Chelsea winning. in 2008/09 season Liverpool became the first team to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Prem since 2004.
In 2009 Liverpool face Chelsea in the Champions League for the 4th time in 5 seasons, with Chelsea beating Liverpool in the quarter finals. In 2010 Gerrard does a back pass to Drogba (I think it was Drogba) so Drogba could score and win the match to help overtake Man United to clinch the title.
In 2011 Torres hands in a transfer request and joins Chelsea. In 2014 Gerrard slips against Chelsea as Chelsea beat us which dented our title hopes. In 2015 Gerrard’s last match at Stamford bridge, he gets a standing ovation from the Chelsea fans, and later that year gets a letter from Mourinho who always liked and wanted to manage Gerrard.

That's because the teams that Scholes played in at United weren't necessarily built around him (Roy Keane was the lynchpin of that midfield). Don't get me wrong, he was brilliant but he wasn't put in an unfamiliar situation throughout his career like a Gerrard whom the Liverpool team relied on.
Scholes could go missing and it wouldn't be an issue because he was stacked with talent (Cole, Yorke, RvN, Giggs, Rooney, Ronaldo) whereas Stevie G couldn't afford an off day (working with the likes of N'gog, Babel, Smicer, Traore, Cissé, Skrtel, Leiva, Spearing, Carroll).

He was just ike Henry in his prime, but in the attacking midfielder position, or like a more worsened and more consistent Ronaldinho (who only was great during 2001-09). Gerrard was class too, like Scholes, but Lampard was closer to Zidane level, in my opinion.

I think Gerrard was a better all-round player. Lampard was fortunate that he played in a system at Chelsea where he always had elite holding players behind him (often two) and his main responsibility was in the attacking third. Gerrard had to do everything, I remember Gerrard once in a youth game against West Ham's youngsters playing at right back. I'm not saying Frank wasn't great in that attacking role, he was a superb finisher and very efficient. It's just a shame the England manager/s at the time didn't try a three with Frank ahead of Gerrard & Scholes, rather one of them shoved out wide. A missed opportunity

Lampard is one of the all time greats hands down. To me he's like Ronald Koeman. You can talk for days about what other players could do better but the amount of goals they both scored would put strikers to shame. That being said people tend to forget the pre Abramovich takeover Lampard. Before the Chelsea takeover Lampard was in his mid 20's with about half a dozen England caps to his name scoring 6-8 goals a season. Then he gets Makalele and Essien dominating the midfield and Drogba holding the ball up in the box and he almost overnight became a superstar banging in 20 goals a season. Credit to him for working to stay in that team but that team was perfect for him. Gerrard was world class by the time he was 21. And he literally carried his team for the majority of his career. He didn't have Lampard's stats but he was a machine off the ball. He did way more defensively than Lampard did and was still the second best attacking midfielder in the league after Lampard. Imagine N'golo Kante with 75% of Lampard's attacking stats and that's Gerrard. It's still close in spite of what I said but Gerrard was better. They're the best in PL history though hands down. Zidane told me 😉

they are same level in terms of class but just different in terms of roles and what they offer. each debate ends with what you value for the team ur tryna create. lamps is phenomenal amongst phenomenal players and all his coaches and teammates chose him as the best player to ever play in chelsea. (talent wise maybe hazard or zola arguably) Lampard was always just slightly better than his teammates. thus he could be arguably better than gerrard for some fans. but other fans can appreciate how gerrard was elite despite being surrounded by average players at times with few worldclass players sort of like hazards time with chelsea

I don't think they had a similar playing style or even a similar mindset: Lampard was the quintessential attacking midfielder in a diamond-shaped 442 whereas Gerrard was the prototypical central midfielder in a flat-442. Still, I understand why they were perennially compared; why they never really worked well together and I was in the "camp" that criticized how the national team went to the pitch with both of them. Nonetheless, loved watching this tubementary - both players deserve their place in football history. Still, I'll answer the leading question thus: If I was forming a team and I had to pick between Lampard and Gerrard, I'd pick Gerrard.

Il stick scholes in aswell…..if gerrard was in the man united and Chelsea teams instead of scholes and lampard , would those clubs still of had the same success? Yes , probably more. If scholes or lampard was in that 2005 Liverpool team that won the cl, would they have had the capability and influence like gerrard to go on and win the champions league with that team around them? I very much doubt it. That’s how you decide who is the better player. Gerrard by a mile.

@@jonertime9249 no chance. Anything and everything scholes can do as an attacking force and play maker , gerrard can do it and is a better gila scorer and consistently takes the games by the scruff of the neck. Gerrard also, certainly in his earlier days was a much better box to box player. Sxholes wasn’t a box to box player. If you take your man united goggles of and look at it without bias, you know it be the truth. Scholes was lucky enough to have top players in every position pretty much all his career. And if you read my original comment properly, you know it’s facts.

@@jonertime9249 again everything scholes could do gerrard had it no problem. Who do you think controlled the tempo at Liverpool? Man united could win many games , big games if scholes wasn’t having a good game. Top draw players in every position means if one isn’t at it someone else will turn it on. Very rare for gerrard to not to be on point , and if he wasn’t , there wasn’t too many other players around him that could grab the game by the scruff of the neck. Scholes have an off game you had Keene , giggs , Beckham not to mention all the top draw strikers at man united that could turn the game around…..there is no argument that you can put down to suggest scholes is a better player then gerrard.

@@leonleon2276 again... I'll make it clearer for you. Paul Scholes can control the tempo of the game to whatever he wanted.. Gerrard was an unbelievable player but wasn't that player. Xabi Alonso was your nearest thing to Scholes. Mayb the scruff of the neck thing what you keep going on about was because Liverpool were shit. It doesn't make him better than Scholes imo. He wouldn't even of got in the United side ahead of Scholes and Keane in 99 for example. Scholes would get in that Liverpool team and they probably would of won the league.
