to be fair the steve martin pink panther is not bad. it was a bad remake of this movie but if it didn't have that connection i think it would have been quite abit more fondly remembered. not too mention my favorite scene from any pink panther movie was in that one. 1 "Kellys Heroes" (1970) I'd love to see your reaction to this. (Loads of great actors playing great characters.. "Woof Woof" (iykyk))
2 James Bond, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". (1969) (David Niven-esque)
3 "One Of Our Dinosaurs Is missing". (1975) (Comedy style)
4 "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines". (1965), Probably wouldn't be worth doing a reaction, but an entertaining film. (Comedy, 60's fashion feeling, gentle story.)

The cartoon actually started as the title sequence to this movie, and proved so popular that it was spun off as a TV series of it's own.
The sequel movies are well worth watching. Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers) becomes the main character in those. Peter Sellers was a well-known British comedian of the time who first came to prominence in a surreal radio comedy show called The Goon Show. His fellow Goons Spike Milligan, Harry Seacombe and Michael Bentine all went on to have successful careers, although of very different types. The Goon Show was a major influence on Monty Python. Just as my generation grew up watching the Pythons, so the Pythons grew up listening to the Goons. The nearest thing to The Goon Show you can watch, as opposed ot listen to, is a short film called The Case Of The Mukkinese Battlehorn (1956): highly recommended.

    • @davidmckie7128
      @davidmckie7128 Před 2 měsíci +2

Although the Goons were a radio show, they filmed "The Last Goon Show Of All" and it is worthy of a watch.

_The Goon Show_ (radio) and _Beyond the Fringe_ (theatre) were probably the 2 biggest influences on the eventual members of Monty Pythonn -- even before they all hooked up at the end of the '60s.

You'll absolutely love Charade (1963) with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. The theme is by Henry Mancini for that movie, too. It's a mystery disguised as a romantic comedy, or vice versa. It'll keep you guessing from beginning to end.

    • @Niinsa62
      @Niinsa62 Před měsícem

Yes, agree, Charade has the perfect 1963 vibe! And it's a great movie! The dialogue is excellent, and fun! The banter between Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn is just so fast! He is trying to pick her up, but she will have nothing of it. And when he gives up and walks away, she goes "You give up awful easy, don't you? Quitter!" And so it goes on... Lovely movie!
It was remade with Mark Wahlberg and Thandie Newton, as The TRUTH About CharLIE. Also quite enjoyable, more mystery and less comedy than the original, but still very much in the same vein. No 1963 vibe though.

    • @OneAndOnlyMe

The Pink Panther movies were most famous for one thing, Peter Sellers' Inspector Clouseau character. He was a side character in this movie, but became the main character moving forward. I hope you check out the sequel 'Shot in the Dark' and 'The Pink Panther Strikes Again' which are comedy classics. Avoid the one with Alan Arkin though, as it wasn't very good.

Fun Pink Panther Movie Facts: This movie was intended to be a perfect comedy thriller for the great English actor David Niven, with American heart throb Robert Wagner brought in to interest the American audience. However, Peter Sellers incredible performance as Inspector Clouseau, in a minor role, actually led to more Clouseau scenes being added to the movie, which in turn led to 4 sequels starring Peter Sellers.

David Niven, a class act, was an incredibly good sport, giving up the spotlight for Sellers during production. He would have done something similar in 1956, in "Around the World in Eighty Days", when he let the gifted Mexican comedian, Cantinflas, steal the spotlight as the valet to Nivens' character (czcams.com/video/SWSiZ7mYDP0/video.html). The "good evening" sequence was a favorite of our dad's.
Our family got to know Robert Wagner by way of a tv series where he starred, "It Takes A Thief", where he played a former thief working for law enforcement and using his expertise to help out. True to form, while my sister loved Wagner, my heart went to the man who played his handler, Malachi Throne (I mean, with a name like that...!).

@@RuntotheMovies right after making “It Takes a Thief”, Grace Kelly became Princess Grace of Monaco.
“Charade” is one of the best “who done it” thrillers with a lot of comedic twists in it (Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn), “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” with Paul Newman and Robert Redford is excellent and much more modern than most 60’s flicks.
One of the absolute best musicals (not really all that much singing in it) is “My Fair Lady,” with Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. Based on a real very obnoxious professor of linguistics who was actually the founder of many techniques used in British intelligence.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is one of the best Westerns made.
At any rate, if you liked “The Pink Panther,” “A Shot in the Dark” is a good bet

    1) "Goldfinger." The early James Bond movies were very big in the 60s. The first worldwide blockbuster of them was Goldfinger.
    2) The biggest comedy of all time (in that it included almost every working comedian of the day) "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World."

Out of all the modern movies you guys have watched, it took a 1963 film to show the word Tweet in the subtitles [4:46] lol
Nice that The King & I got a mention! I grew up on musicals, as cheesy as they were, they were also uplifting and often with bigger budgets and better made than people think.
I get a little sad watching David Niven now, long story short, my mum had MND (Lou Gehrig's aka ALS) and the British blue thumbs up pin badges and logos linked to the British MND charity were originally a defiant thumbs up gesture Mr Niven gave in a photo at the time he was suffering from the disease. He's a wonderful actor, but I most remember this image of him later in life when the disease had him in it's grasp and how bold he was to make that thumbs up despite it being a horrible disease and impending future. So now whenever I see him, it reminds me of this fact and the drama of the onset of illness. Respect to all those who suffer any disease and the families and friends that attempt to share some of their burdens

Great to see you both watching - and enjoying - this classic that started the Pink Panther series! Not enough reactors do these movies. I could tell Hannah especially was getting tense during the hotel bedroom/bathroom farce scenes with characters coming and going (and Clouseau oblivious to the men in the room), because she kept furiously playing with her hair! 🤣 One of my favourite parts of this is near the end, with the chase sequences of the vehicles and the 'zebra', where the local man just calmly watches all the chaos go on around him! 🤣
As others have said, this film is not entirely representative of what the character of Clouseau and the style of his films became, but he was not originally the central character, However, Peter Sellers was such a good actor - straight and comedic - that he stole the show in the scenes he was in, despite the real star at this time being the legendary David Niven as Sir Charles. Later on, Sellers became the lead and the Clouseau character morphed into a more directly comedic one, with less of the pathos in his performance that you see in the extended 'romantic' scenes here (like the farce around the hotel bedroom and bathroom), and different supporting characters.
A Shot in the Dark, The Return of the Pink Panther, The Pink Panther Strikes Again and Revenge of the Pink Panther (all directed by Blake Edwards and starring Peter Sellers during his lifetime) are all worth seeing as they are the better films in what is considered the entire Pink Panther series. You should watch at the very least the first two of those!
Later films in the series - made after Sellers' death in 1982 and using footage of him posthumously inserted into the story - are nowhere near as good.
And don't even bother with the so-called "reboot" you mentioned at the start - Steve Martin as Clouseau is a travesty and an insult to the memory of Sellers who was a far superior performer!

There's actually not only sequels, but also a prequel. A Shot In The Dark. That one is hilarious! It was released after this one, even though it was filmed before. Because the movie company was concerned about how that movie turned out, and they didn't think anyone would enjoy seeing the clumsy Inspector Clouseau for a whole movie. So they made him a side character in this movie instead, and he stole the show. So then they released the first movie after all. The nudist camp scene alone is a must see!

Peter Sellers... arguably the greatest actor who ever lived except Lon Chaney. Bot were similar in that, they had to make multiple characters and movements and body language, to do their acts. Sellers had to start in radio, so he came up with dozens of characters and voices. And once he started doing movies he continued, but now used also, costumes and makeup. Just absolutely brilliant. And his ability to play, so inept, is amazing!

It has an all star cast of comedians that you might not recognized, though you might recognize The Three Stooges in a 2-3 second cameo. The main star is Spencer Tracy, who was a big name in the 40's & 50's & was married to or dated Katherine Hepburn (they also did a few movies together).

Capucine (Madame Clouseau) was a French supermodel turned actress. She starred in another Screwball comedy shot in Paris called WHAT'S NEW, PUSSYCAT?(1965). The sequel to Pink Panther is A SHOT IN THE DARK (1964), which is even funnier, as Inspector Clouseau comes into his own and is the main character. THE RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER (1975) is pee-your-pants Hilarious! Peter Sellers also stars as the title character to another heist comedy filmed in Italy in AFTER THE FOX (1966), co-starring Victor Mature and Brit Ekland. One of the great international heist comedies, and actually inspired the tv series Mission Impossible (which inspired the films) was TOPKAPI (1964), with Peter Ustinov, Melina Mercouri and Maximillian Schell. I recommend all five of those films - as they are true classics, and 4 out of 5 are mid-sixties.

If you want a vibe and even more mad cap, try the original “Casino Royale.” For something just as light but less funny and more romantic: “How to Steal a Million.” A little (a little) less light but amazingly charming is “Charade.” Also, played straight, but sooo glamorous is “To Catch A Thief,” which the Pink Panther is actually a parody of. On the spy thriller side, I recommend “Funeral in Berlin.” Two other good comedies are “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World,” and “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming.” For black and white dramas, “7 Days in May” and “Failsafe.”

Hi Hannah & Toy, really pleased this was your actual reaction to this classic comedy film. You got me with that 1/4/24 one, well acted. I had been hoping you would react to this series of films. As many have said, Peter Sellers was a genius of comedy, especially with his different voices & characterizations.
He has 2 comedy films where he portrayed several different characters in the same film. The first was (The Mouse That Roared) 1959 & the second was (Dr. Strangelove) 1964, perhaps you will also react to them at some point. Another comedy film with an Actor portraying many characters is (Kind Hearts & Coronets) 1949, starring Alec Guinness, later of Star Wars fame. :)

You picked a really good series to start. These films have a very unique flavor, and you'll never see films like this again. The next one is pretty important, since it sets up some characters and a basic structure, that the other sequels will follow. As for the Princess, it might be a little hard to determine her reasons, but I think her motives are as simple as she liked Charles, and she didn't really know the inspector. It's a bit of a shame, as she seemed more sophisticated, but in the end seemed to be vulnerable to a handsome face. It's good to see you guys vibe-ing with these older films. The first ones were before my time, but they definitely had an impact on my time. In spite of having a lot of slapstick, they are also pretty intelligently done, unlike the ones from the 2000's, which are a purée made from low hanging fruit. What is REALLY odd, is that the latest ones have aged worse than the older ones, and if you elect to see them, you will know what I mean. You should be prepared to cringe.

Hell yes, please continue the series. No one on YT (that I'm aware of, anyway) has dove very deep into this series. I'd love to finally see someone do so.

Thanks for watching with us! We'll see what happens. So far, very few people are watching this video, do it may not be feasible to continue unless someone orders a reaction through Reactr.
Hopefully, the views for this reaction will pick up with time.

@@RuntotheMovies Yes, unfortunately, for most people these days, if it's from before they were born, they just don't give a damn -- even if it's better than a lot of crap coming out these days (for the record, it predates my birth as well). 😔
I'd recommend also possibly checking out some Laurel & Hardy movies, given that they were a great influence on Sellers' shtick.

The Party (1968) is another great Peter Sellers comedy, although it might be too un-PC for modern audiences.
