There is a reason that people build large poultry runs that are surrounded by four walls and a top completely made from half inch hardware cloth. Then they put a door in one side. They use the electric poultry netting to detour preditors. It is usually built as an extension of the barn. Use a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to detour alge and it is healthy for the poultry.

I seen you can go to the dollar store and get a toilet bowl brush and it’ll be just for cleaning the inside of the watering containers for the animals. I even use one to clean the buckets of mine for my dogs. I have big dogs so they drink water out of a 3 gallon bucket.

I have always heard to add a splash of apple cider vinegar , which is also good for the birds. Regarding the netting the chickens are getting through, is it poultry netting. I know some are made that also has the black netting around the bottom which has smaller holes they cannot get through.
I keep a spray bottle with 1/2and 1/2 dawn and vinegar. Spray that inside leave for a few minutes and it is easier to clean. I clean the waterers way more than once a week though. If I'm on a hurry I use a medal pot scrubber
Hey Y'all, Try adding 1-2 tablespoons of vinegar to the drinking water will discourage the growth of algae biofilm and iron biofilm are both discouraged by a low water PH. That is the tricky part putting up a fence that works for all the different birds as it is really more dangerous to some of them. You do not want Henry getting into the fence but in a couple years he will be old enuf that will not be a problem. Cya next time.

Me thinks you could nap in there for sure. he he he he The large BLUE 5 gallon to larger size barrels work very well, with the nipples on them. I've seen Wes use the Very Large Blue or Black Barrels for watering with Metal Nipples he would drill into the side of them at multiple levels around the barrel. You can fill them once, every few days and not have to clean them incessantly because of algae and grime. They are well worth the expense and will pay off in the end. It just depends on the livestock you are watering with them, what your needs will be in Barrel Sizes !!

Watching you chase chicks - while it is entertaining, do yourself a favor just grab a net next time you hit a yard sale to make your poultry wrangling easier going forward haha. Also, for watering I have been using a simple garden hose with a dog "lixit" on the end for ten years. It is clean poop free water with zero time involved cleaning.
Your flocks look so clean and healthy. We used the metal chicken waterers and they lasted years and years- mostly inside the coop. I am not a fan of plastic, period even stored all livestock feed in galvanized garbage cans placed on top of cinder block. Loved the video. Thanks for sharing!
Sean, easily made is s roof that sits on top of the waterer and hangs over 2-3". Just build a square w a slight rim upside down on top. For a rounded top cut a hole ans slide it on top. They can roost and you can take it off daily and knock off the poop.
At my local TSC, the 5 gallon metal waterers from harrison farms are about the same price as the 5 gallon plastic waterers. I bought 5 gallon plastic ones about 3 years ago. 2 have broken from weakening in the sun. Im replacing all of my waterers with the metal ones.
If you haven’t already done it, just clip one wing. The uneven feather length from one wing to the other doesn’t allow them to fly, if you clip both wings the length is even and they can still fly somewhat.

In case you don't see my comments in the last video: Green beans are great. I am making more room for them. They give me more food per square foot than most everything else I can grow. Try stir frying them with a little oil, a little soy sauce and a little Asian chili paste. You don't want to over power the flavors. Garnish with some sesame seeds. Don't over cook.
Can't you put the smaller waterers under a table/box of some kind so that they don't sit directly on top of their food or water containers? It would also shade the water more and reduce the algae growth along with some apple cider vinegar.

A black water bucket sitting in the sun is a kettle you can make tea or coffee from. Hot water won't do your chickens any favors ;)

Also those metal waterers are galvanized and will not rust.
You can drop a small section of copper pipe into each water bucket and it will prevent algae from growing.

Add vinegar. good for chickens and helps with algae.
I never had any trouble with alge in my chickens ' waterer. But I did put ACV in the water. So I guess that is why.
Henry will be helping you around the farm soon. He is getting so big. Maybe the breast chickens need a permanent fence with chicken wire.

Paint the outside of the waters with black paint, and the algea will not be as bad.

A week is a long time to go between water changes.
I change the water at least twice a day! I meant that I had to clean those waterers at least once a week.
