  • After 25 years David Carson, one of the most influential graphic designers in the world, returns to Fabrica for a lecture open to the public on 12 May 2022.
Born in Texas in 1955, David Carson spent his adolescence in Florida. Professional surfer, he graduated with a BA in Sociology from San Diego University.
Having experience in both the world of surfing and graphics, in the eighties he specialized as a graphic designer working for music, fashion and surfing magazines, such as “Transworld Skateboarding” and “Surfer”. He achieved international fame as the artistic director of the then-well-known magazine “Ray Gun” (1992-1995) where he proposed an innovative and experimental use of graphics and a massive use of typefaces. His style is a precursor of what is called “grunge typography”.
In 1995 he published his first book “End of Print” which collects several of his creations and which still remains the best-selling graphic design book of all time.
The same year he opened his studio in New York, David Carson Design, which will begin to attract clients such as Pepsi, Ray Ban, Nike, Microsoft, Levis, Kodak, Sony, Giorgio Armani, NBC, American Airlines, Levis, AT&T, British Airways, Suzuki, Toyota, Warner Bros., CNN, MTV, Fox TV, Nissan, Mercedes and bands such as Nine Inch Nails, for which he will curate the artwork for the 1999 album “The Fragile”.
David Carson has won more than 200 awards and gives lectures all over the world.

Very tough crowd haha. Great stuff as always from David. It would be cool to hear him give a talk about bridging the gap between really exciting graphic design, his art, and meshing it with today's standards of sharp, corporate graphic design.

Quite interesting how a great artist like him produced so many pieces I personally highly dislike despite being an admirer of his work. He just produced a lot and some did resonate with us and some simply did not. I love it

Probably a good idea to use a more descriptive title than a person's name.

Fan of early Carson work - not so much the recent stuff. It feels like the fire went out somewhere along the way - like there was nothing more that he wanted to explore or prove. His comment about "if the client likes what I make for them and I like it - and I don't like the work of the people who are critical of my work - who cares" says a lot. Client's feelings and your feelings aren't the same as what the market feels. The market should be inspired by your work, the client should pay you and you should always be trying to hear what is being said while adjusting your lens on the world... not just saying "well, the client smiled... so I'm good" unless you're just done doing great work and now you just need the money.
