Frome and the Somerset Countryside Cycle Ride

  • A ride I've been wanting to explore for quite some time, continuing south from the end of Two Tunnels Greenway in Bath, past the old disused Midford Railway Station and on through the beautiful Somerset countryside.
I planned a route to take in a couple of locations, following the Sustrans cycle trail down to the town of Radstock, then a few miles south west to have a look around Midsomer Norton (the namesake of the TV show Midsomer Murders), then back up to Radstock and continuing south east for around 7 miles down to my destination town of Frome.
What a pleasant ride this was. Lots of traffic-free cycle trails but also including some challenging countryside road sections. Having a really good summers day with a hot sun but just enough coolness in the air to keep things pleasant.
The whole round trip was about 50 miles in all so quite challenging for me but worth it for the views of fields with fresh crops spouting in the fields, old railways tracks hidden in the undergrowth and of course the great two tunnels in Bath.
A big thank you to The Riverside Cafe at Black Swan Arts, Frome for the excellent food and service.
This might be up there with my favourite cycle rides.
    Enjoy!
    Trails used ;
Bath Two Tunnels Greenway, Sustrans Route 244.
    Sustrans Route 24 (Wellow/Radstock).
    Five Arches Norton Radstock Greenway.
Sustains Route 24 Colliers Way (Frome).

These videos are inspirational for anyone looking for a day out on their bike. I'm really enjoying them. Even though I'm a bit late to the party I'm gradually catching up. By the way the pillboxes along the Bridgewater/Taunton canal and up through the Levels are part of the Somerset Stop Line, constructed in 1940, after the fall of France, when it was thought an invasion via the South West may follow. It extended from the South Coast up to the Bristol Channel. Other, similar, defensive networks were also built around the country.

Thanks very much! I try to capture life as it is now as well as the trail for people to ride. Very interesting what you mentioned about the Somerset Stop Line and the pillboxes. I grew up around these kinds of things like bunkers. It's amazing how many we still have. I'm going to pin your comment to the top for the information.

I was quite keen cyclist, y led London for Altziemers charity and Birmingham for Cancer Charity. I’ve had a triple bypass in early January. I’m son the mend slowly. I miss my Scot bike. But bought an e-bike, really enjoyed cycling for breakfast this morning. Hopefully will soon be strong enough for a coast to coast along Hadrians Wall by summer. Thinking of charity ride for the BRI who successfully did my op x

Just amazing. Fingers crossed for you to be well enough for the tour! I don’t know if CZcams will let it in the comments but if and when you have a link for the charity feel free to post it here. If I see it in the spam filter I should be able to let it through. Keep us updated!

Yr an inspiration..this route was planned last Sunday !! Haha imagine if I made it to swap stories... but alas I took a pleasant plan B alongside the K & A towards Dundas Aquaduct/Monkton Combe for a swim then pedalled back for another dip at Warleigh Wier bf heading back to the train station for 9:30pm ...
So u did this yesterday ?
I was at Walcott chapel yesterday eve performing for Bath Fringe Arts 😅

Oh wow, what are the chances! You picked the right route though, the Dundas Aqueduct trail is just gorgeous. Very idyllic. Yes would have been amazing to bump into each other. No unfortunately this was about 3 weeks ago, train strikes and weather are ruling my rides at the moment and this video took about 2 weeks to put together, some rides are easy to edit, some take ages. I have another to start putting together next. Sounds like you had a great day. A swim is a nice addition! Keep riding those trails :-)
      What were you performing?
