You can test PGXP Depth Buffer on games like Twisted Metal 2 and Resident Evil 1, sometime the character’s joints can pop thru like Jill’s elbow, or the Mr. Slam portrait appearing front of his vehicle and the glitching paintings in Twisted Metal 2. Plenty of games on PSX run sub 30FPS a lot of the time, you can test this in the cave section in Metal Gear Solid. When looking at certain areas in first person view your FPS can drop as low as 20. If you overclock the PSX CPU to about 130% you will have a solid 30fps almost all of the time.

Great guide, however you should really make a video showcasing Duckstations Overclock option, once you get beefier hardware.
For example, the game Danger Girl (USA) (SLUS-00881) has in fact an unlocked frame rate, so in Duckstation, I have the Overclock option set to 555% (187.97MHz) for this game, and the game is silky smooth throughout.
The vast majority of games however run at 19 and 29 fps, but even so it always pays to have the overclock option enabled, one just has to find the correct overclock percentage for each game individually.
How? By having the "Show FPS" option enabled under "Graphics" in the "OSD" tab and enabling the overclock option and clicking on the little slider, and moving it forward a few percentages until you find the correct percentage.
If you see that the fps changes from 29 fps to 39 fps, turn it down a percentage by percentage until the fps goes back to 29. That way if the game already runs at 29 fps, you will have the added benefit of overclocking nonetheless, as it will make your inputs and your character movement(s) smoother and the fps won't drop it will always be stable.

renderer choices is about usage of you Pc hardware. DX11 - using just GPU. most common thing. DX12 and vulkan i didnt test cus i still use win7, and when i turn on vulkan i got blue screen, (strange cus i use RPCS3 on vulkane and its just fine). OpenGL - best choice for me, it use GPU same as DX11, but also 1 thread of CPU for help. so if someone has lags of emulator work - this is your way, but! cus its OPEN GL - IF you are streamer - your OBS will not catch game at full screen. that how all openGL things work (maybe windowed will work) Software - is just original PS1 hardware lookin
for most game JINC2 is best way of filtering. but some games is better for xBR, such as Silent hill, or hogs of war.... keep in mind that xBR is not just a smoother as bilenial or JINC2 - its doin its job al the time, so it abit more tougher for PC
Strange thing, but at aspect ratio menu i have AUTO (window match) and it work perfectly without cheats.. whatever i do window size.. 16:9 or 10:1 no mater...
BTW, all that stuff as torn on\off PGXP, filters, renderers, render size - its all can be binded in hotkey menu
and i might be wrong but - are you didnt say about PS1 CPU OVERCLOCK? to decrease game lags, or increase frame rate in games that allows that...

  • @everx7

Talking about shaders i use the built in, Cccalibrator only, cause u can nicely adjust how the game looks without going the crt shader way, make the game more hm colorful, like u know bring up the colors a bit, cause some games can look really dull, but its again personal preference and i used also crt lotte etc. with combination of calibrator and maybe gamma, but i dont know, i made one of the gmae looks almost like a cell shaded game and i dont know why but it suited that game specifically not so much with others
talking about this game Threads of Fate (really looked almost like a new retro styled indie game :)), anyway i use personalized settings for every game i play, i had set up the main options like for all games to be the same except those that are like a bit questionable to work with every one of them properly.
Like PGXP is defaultly on, cause it just makes most of the games i did play so much better. In the rest like with Powerslave i rather kept it off, cause the wobllyness and PGXP in this game makes too much holes in between textures or gaps should i say. So by turning it off entirely makes it better, not perfect but still better and that wobblyness is not that hard like in other games for example Syphon Filter 2 or 3 i think, it was a nightmare, but i guess still playable.
Also i know this was about graphics but just saying for those that need it, overclocking option does help but if u can try to be close to max 200%, dont go too much over this treshold cause u might experience side effects like for example that happened to me, u wont be able to save the game, or if u have set up the cd read speed for too fast of a multiplier, with games like Nightmare Creatures 2 ull end up with unfinished monologues during loadings. Really irritating stuff. Also it makes difference sure, but not so much its worth ruining the gaming experience.

      @@warpedpolygon
Look probably i should explain. (also to be clear i dont care if its legit or not, ill do it if the gameplay wont suffer for it)
So i do the OC only with games that are meant to be played at certain fps, so it wont drop below that or at least not too often.
There are games that should run 30. But they often hit 20 or lower in some areas or situations etc. cutscene what have u.
So in these cases i apply 150% OC. Most games need this boost, some less, some more, but generally 150 is enough to get 30+- or 29.97 stable, in those games that should run at this rate.
Those that are same but with 60 limit i do the same if the fps is fluctuating too much, or too often from its desired 60.
Thats it. I wont play a game that is designed at 30 and ill OC the shit out of it so it will do 60. Its insane and also itll break things.
I was experiencing said drops with Army Men games, so i did OC. But went too far and the game could run at 60. But then immediately u cna see that its just too fast. It wasnt meant to run like that. Things brake. Like for instance the most obvious driving a tank, its just almost not possible. Running with the soldier and shooting kinda possible but still looks weird and not right.
So yeah. There are games that break with going too far with OC and there are those that benefit and not like in a way u might call it cheating or its to easy. The opposite. Everything is as it should be. Those timings u mentioned. Id argue that they are off if u let the dips happen. Cause those are the HW faults not the programming itself.
U dont need to travel far in the past, or just be now. Certain games cant be run 60fps on PS5 for example and the HW exists to be able to do. But we have a certain kind of hw in those consoles that can run those games but either 4k 30, balanced 60 or performance 60/120.
U have options and despite that still occasional drops happen and so they are very few and far between and whats important it wont ruin ur gameplay.
But with the PS1 id argue that some games are almost unplayable because of that.
Syphon Filter that i mentioned is one of those games, 20fps, i almost clawed my eyes out playing it. But it was made that way and it runs and without OC i add.
Again. OC is a blessing for certain games. And curse for others and like a no deal for others cause they are already running as they should and doing the OC wont do anything.
I dont know if u meant really the OC or the speedup thing, cause i think those are pretty different things.
Whatever all i know is ill keep using it for those troubled games and not with those that dont need that extra umph to achieve the desired fps.

An amazing video, thank you very much for all the explanation! But I have two questions
    - The first one is in the minute 6:02 your Crash Bandicoot has those weird like, square thingies on the sides, if you walk, it looks like the map is generating itself constantly, but in all the other parts of the video, this issue isn't there anymore. I have this issue in this specific game, how can I fix it? I've tried turning on and off many things but I can't really fix it :'c
    - Also I just wanted to know which game are you playing in minute 19:25
Again, thank you very much for everything!

    • @warpedpolygon
      @warpedpolygon  Před 3 měsíci +1

The issue at 6:02 is not a fixable one. As explained there is simply nothing at the extreme edges of the screen to display. The devs simply didn't put anything there as it would be unseen on a 4:3 display which the game was made for.
The game at 19:25 is Vampire Hunter D.

Invaluable video. Thanks a lot! Only thing I'm missing are the cheats. The folder is empty and the manager doesn't show any. I guess I just play them in their native aspect ratio.
Any idea if PAL or NTSC games are preferred? Afaik, PAL games have better image quality but only run at 50hz while NTSC runs at 60 with less good image quality - not sure if the image quality is noticeable to stick to PAL though.

    • @warpedpolygon
      @warpedpolygon  Před 3 měsíci

For me its about native 60hz so NTSC.
If you're Upscaling and adding filtering the difference in image quality isn't really going to be noticeable. Maybe pal looks better at native res on a crt but emulated on a digital display, i doubt many could tell the difference even if there is any. Sometimes pal ports can have different stuff going on i suppose, but again I will gladly trade this for 60hz
