    I like to increase my PS1 games resolution to only 480p so that textures and detail get much clearer still maintaining that PS1 look and not drawing too much attention to the low resolution of textures and simple geometry. I haven't tried Duckstation yet, but Retroarch's Beetle PSX core has a really cool feature for games that mix 2D backgrounds and 3D objects, where you increase the internal resolution only as an anti alising process, while the external resolution stays low so that 3D objects don't pop like a sore thumb on 2D backgrounds. It's great for games like Resident Evil 1-3 and Final Fantasy 7-9. 2D-only games benefit from higher resolutions if there's zooming out, like PSX's Blood Omen or Saturn's Darius, those games really look great that way.

      Mednafen Beetle is also great, but you're stuck with native resolution and no enhancements, but Duckstation absolutely kills it. It's up to 99.5% compatibility with games playable start to finish with almost zero issues and the emulation accuracy almost reaches that of Mednafen Beetle if not surpassing it in several areas. The amazing part is that it can achieve all this while running on a potato PC.

    @SianaGearz Před 2 lety +5

    Nice. An emulator i wasn't aware of, and with modern tech underneath. And really sensible too.
    I like Vanishing Point! But the version to pick, if one were to play it, is the one on Dreamcast. It's 60fps, it has a much higher geometry resolution and texture resolution.
    Disagree on Koudelka. The emulator is doing the best it possibly could while rendering at higher resolution. It's just flickery because this is just how the game is. If you look closely, the original Playstation shows the same exact object flicker where objects partially come in front and then behind each other; it's merely obscured by similar colour, dither, and low resolution. I have been able to track down every glitch i looked at here seen in emulation back to original system footage seen here. If you can't quite see it in frame by frame comparison, it's probably because they occur just one or two frames earlier or later in the footage for either system, but they're all there.
    Newer systems have a Z-buffer, which is a intermediate buffer that for every pixel of the output image, stores its depth, so when a new polygon is drawn, each pixel can be individually depth-tested and discarded if it's occluded. The Playstation doesn't have a Z-buffer, so the way Playstation games solve occlusion, is by using bucket sort to determine the approximate order of polygons or polygon groups, usually convex chunks, like the whole forearm of a character would be one chunk, but there will be smaller chunks too. So the game throws these objects into "buckets", each bucket corresponds to a thin-ish slice of distances from the camera, and then the GPU takes these buckets and draws them starting with furthest and ending with the nearest. This has some fundamental issues. First, if there is one depth value considered per chunk, then the chunks can actually be oriented in such a way that one chunk is visually in front of another, but their average distance values look like the opposite is the case, and this can happen with chunks that are relatively long and thin, such as torso or forearm, or have very dissimilar sizes to another, or where due to the method of estimating the chunk centre, it comes out closer to one side than the other. Second, there just isn't enough resolution in the Playstation math to provide good depth values, and PGXP simply can't follow the value from where it's being generated to where it's being used, so the sorting precision remains unenhanced, it stays like original hardware. And third, objects with different nearby depth values end up in one bucket and are considered equal, so the order in which they are drawn ends up being arbitrary.
    Currently, no solution is known. Since we have PGXP, so we have actual depth values passed through to the GPU, we can bypass the bucket sort and implement Z buffering - it's actually implemented right here, the "Depth Buffer" option. But this necessarily will break a LOT of stuff, and would be a truly Sisyphean task to unbreak.
    9:44 colour me impressed with the audio resampling quality here. The Playstation has interpolation artefacts - normally those don't matter, since the source audio isn't usually this horribly undersampled, so they generally end up above audible band. But the emulator cleans them up a lot. 10:18 those clicks on the other hand don't make me happy, but it seems like the same game on the original hardware has some of those too, so maybe it's just how the game is. The next game clicks on both as well. I'm not sure the emulator can really do much to de-click the SPU without causing more clicks elsewhere.
    Playstation's own texture rendering is "nearest neighbour" so linear or texture enhancement algorithms tend to backfire, especially at the texture seams where there's no provision to continue interpolation across them, unlike in games on newer systems developed with linear interpolation in mind, which have extra repeating texture data behind the seam to hide it, and are quite careful about inconspicuous seam placement. On PSP the native mode on the other hand is "linear", which however can look pretty blurry when targeting larger than a 5" screen, especially for things like HUD and menu graphics.

      On a few games you can remove the slowdown when there is too much 3D stuff on the screen with a slight overclock, but on other games it increases the games speed too much, so they will run unnaturally faster.
      One example would be: Rugrats - Search for Reptar
      In that game you can get slowdowns from 30 FPS down to 15 FPS (for example in the kitchen area), with a slight overclock (130%-150%) it stays 30 FPS stable all the time with a few exceptions where it goes faster.

You can hook up a PC to one but it is not as easy, and the hardware will probably end up costing more than a console with accessories and mods, but with a PC you can play basically all the consoles. Is a choice that each one has to make. I use emulators up to the Dreamcast, everything newer I use real hardware as emulators for those consoles aren't that great.

    For me, it's like this:
    If you choose an emulator, whether it's PS1 or PS2, you're striving for perfection according to modern standards (high resolution, no jagged edges, high FPS count). Every game will be different so expect to mess around with the settings constantly and learn a bit more about how things work with these consoles. I've experienced a lot of graphical glitches, stutter, lag and slowdown with certain games, but also had some good times with games which looked excellent in high resolution.
    If you choose the original hardware, you're getting a constant performance. It may not look as good as emulators can get it to look, but there won't be any weird glitches, slowdown or anything of the sort. It's constant. Also, no matter how good emulators get, original hardware always seems to pull off some effects better (like fog or mist). They don't seem to show up on emulators because they get ''cleaned up''.
    There are pros and cons for both, emulators are way more convenient and Save States are a huge plus in my book.
