Easily my favourite Kiss commentator so far
Kiss will always be the most underrated overrated band everyone knows them but not how good they really are.
Rock and Roll Over remains my favorite KISS album.
You and many others, including me.Then I like DTK ,KISS,DESTROYER,LG and Creatures.
@Lebo leigh Leigh Yes, "Hot In The Shade" most certainly is. So at least you got THAT right.
KISS had Lots of influence on Metal!!
97warlock ismyname I read a comment somewhere else, and I definitely agree with this. KISS made heavy metal by mistake.Ace created the that KISS ha back then. I just can't get into the KISS today.Ace Rules man!!!
97warlock ismyname Ace created the sound that KISS had back in the day. Raw, Ripping metal to me man
@RedneckSpaceMan Don't forget the biggest selling country artist of all time.Garth Brooks. He covered Hard Luck Woman so...
Kiss is metal
I've been Playing in a band professionally for 30 years called HARD LABOUR. Kiss are a good and tight band musically and their original early music is great. Every good Rock band has a spark member and Ace was the spark in Kiss but the other band mates brought that spark out of him. Any professional musician will understand and appreciate what I'm saying. It's a lot of hard work and a great live band becomes tight after 500 gigs. It is Not as easy as it looks so show some respect.
I love the guitar solo on Strange Ways. Highly underrated.
Yeah that's their best song in my opinion
Agreed! Probably the least amount of trademark tricks and fills. Sometimes I wonder if that was even Ace playing that solo. Don’t think I’ve ever read anything that verifies it one way or the other.
Strange way Solo is very similar to the one on mr. Blackwell and dark light also escape from the island.
There is only one reason why i started playing the drums : Peter Criss, the year was 1980, the year of his departure.
I had taken it upon myself to be his replacement. I was 8 years old.
True story.
I Started to play guitar because of Ace Frehley. 😄
Why does everybody that hears the beginning of Detroit Rock City think the guy is working on his car? He's working at a restaurant washing dishes, clinking forks and knives, waiting to get off and go to the concert.
@@ACG7001 Listen to the song again. Does it sound like a wrench? No, it's dishes.
@Jessica Jujubean ...and then the intro riff of the song is ripped off from "Deuce".
I always thought the sound of the car supposed to run as hell is really weak. It sounds as a Trabant, or something. This annoys me, because I am a great fan both of Kiss and Destroyer.
@Love God & Neighbor. Exactly. He's not washing dishes. It's his keys jingling as he's getting in his car.
Never new this always thought car driver was tuning up the car - great to know this info had it all wrong over 40 years..
Thanks for this Vid! Very well done!!
Kiss is a very legendary band I don't understand why people b**** so much about them
Gene and Paul didn't place an ad for a drummer... PETER put the ad in Rolling Stone, and they came across it.
LaCroix Creative your correct, i dont know who this clown is doing this documentary but he dont know what he is talking about
"Drummer with 11 years experience will do anything to make it" said the ad
True, doesn't really matter at all though!!! They loved Peter's sound and jungle rythym and unique sound and that is that!!! Him and Ace still got more applause at the Rock and roll hall of fame induction!!! Enough said
If you think Mainline is a ballad then you need to stop drinking the bong water.
I love this video. great job man!
Love it!...Kiss fan since 1976!
I remember as a little kid in the 70s...Listening to my older siblings KISS album's...I thought
"Cold Gin" was
"Closing Time"again. ....
I was only 5...
Dude you’re awesome thank you for making this retrospective ! Cheers
In 1981 I had just turned 10 and my parents said I could pick out my own birthday gift so I started scrolling through all the albums. Now being that we didn't have a lot of $$$ I was limited to this one section and that was where I discovered this crazy looking band called KISS and the album was their 1975 KISS Alive album. Needless to say that was the day I was also drafted into the Kiss Army...talk about getting lucky that day because I was allowed a 2nd album due to the sale and found another KISS album which was Dress To Kill. Not only does their music bring back great memories but just the process of discovering their music but I can even remember cranking out Hotter Then Hell and the look on my friends face as we are making up stories about where these larger then life characters may have come from😂😂😂 not many bands can create that atmosphere...All hail the Kiss Gods🤩🤩🤩
I gotta thank you for a great video and I can't agree more in what you say about the albums. Fantastic 🤘😀🤘
I love KISS they are the best no matter what anybody says🎃🎃
Eric Carr was a kind man. Watch Tale of the Fox.
you bet met him after a show a couple of times....I have a nice shot of him in that video also.....I know a couple of guys that helped put that 2gether back then RIP ERIC
I first got KISS in 1979 when I was 14. Dynasty had just been released here in Australia and they just exploded. I loved the singles from that album and still do. A great album completely. I first saw KISS sometime in 1978. My older brother had been loaned Double Platinum by a friend and it was lying around. I remember picking it up and trying to work out what was on the cover. I remember thinking it was sort of interesting but I could not work out what I was actually looking at. I didn't even put it on. Then came Dynasty. I have been hooked since. I just love the original KISS. To this day. TOTAL FUCKING ROCK!
Kiss was peaking in Australia at the time their popularity in the States started to wane
Great video! Almosthuman56 sent me.
Dr. Fuck ROCKS!!
this is AWESOME
Plaster Caster is an underrated gem from "Love Gun"
You know that's a real person, who makes plaster casts of famous people's penises?
FUCK NO!!!!!!
Almost Human is a cool Gene tune..
My fave KISS moment........the "TOM SNYDER SHOW" incident w/ Peter and Ace completely out of it.......and Gene and Paul cringing and wanting to run screaming from the interview......CLASSIC!
Anguirus2012 ACE Fucking Frehley Rules period
I really love Heavy Metal and obiously KISS Is one of the most big influences in Metal history!!! Greetings from 🇨🇱 (I hope to see them again in Santiago this year ♥️😘)
Hahaaa, its so great to hear other fans' opinions of the albums. Awesome man, thank you.
That Ace laugh lmfao
Advice from a fan since 1975: Listen to the stuff up until Creatures Of The Night. Everything afterward just isn't Kiss - even the Reunion stuff. KISS was best when they were young and hungry. So, the shows and the albums up to Alive II are awesome! Solo Albums are ok, but disjointed. The Elder, Dynasty, Unmasked... are so/so. Creatures was the band's last gasp, in my opinion.
wrong but anyway
KISS was early 1974 until very early 1978. Everybody knows that.
Lisa K ..... lol!
Scar Seven ..... I'm talking about the KISS that mattered. But thanks for proving that I can always count on a child to call me some moronic name.
Scar Steven - Wow! Issues?? Are you threatened by other people's opinions? That seems to happen a LOT on the Internet - at least within the past 20 years of it.
I love the 4 solo albums. Friggin awesomeness of songs on all 4 records.
Holy shit your content is awesome! This retrospective is sick
Good shit bro!
Happy this episode is back. It was blocked in my country for a while
This is the second video of yours I have watched... they’re great, and you sir, have great expectations!!
You're my new favorite channel now!
Stole your love is the perfect opening song for kiss
Best show on Kiss I have seen.
I bet Ace really did look weird if he wore two different “pairs” of shoes. Four legged lead guitarists weren’t as common in the 70’s as they are today.
lol
orange and red socks maybe.
Dr. Fukk sent me here✊✊
Great guy
DownFall NetWork ikr
I almost turned this video off but Prince Adam kept me. Good work
I don't care what anyone says - The Elder is a great album - a Templar Rock Opera - with some kick ass tracks ... it gets a high rotation on my record player ....
I'm the " OH YES! WTF, KISS!" crowd! I heard these stories a million times before, but it's nice hearing it told different ways by different people!
I've been a fan since 77...I love 70s Kiss...but I love 80s Kiss too...Lick it up was a great album...A million to one...is a masterpiece...loved Animalize... Asylum...not that big into crazy nights...or..hot in the shade..but loved Revenge in 92!!... didn't like psycho circus..but loved Sonic Boom!....No matter what..good or Bad....Kiss was always there...acdc can't say that... rolling Stones tour once every 5-8 years...Kiss is the band of the people by the people.
I love your down to earth, no bullshit, fucking honest commentary..keep on rockin' on.
KISS is a genre that most people forgot existed. It's called Rock n' Roll. They were probably the last Rock n' Roll band to ever be. When their tour is finished, that genre will be gone.
That being said, the amount of factual errors in this video were kind of a lot. Mostly about which songs were on which album, who wrote what song, etc. The 4 album contract agreement, etc. But, you're coming at it from a hard rock and metal appreciation angle, which is cool. KISS eventually went into so many genres, that they appeal to anyone. Some say Carnival of Souls is their best album, others The Elder. I personally can't pick a favorite album -maybe their debut album- but I can find a host of KISS songs to fit whatever mood I'm in.
KISS however is a strange band concerning their fans. No other band get's crucified like KISS does for having new members. Every band has had replacement members. Is it weird that Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer wear make-up that was unique to Ace and Peter, yes. I could care less, so long as they sound awesome (which Eric Singer certainly does) But, the band is very much a brand these days, like Disney. Family friendly music, a huge stage show, singing the same 16 songs every fricken concert. It's turned into Americana. Go see Mt. Rushmore, visit the Grand Canyon, and catch a KISS show.
The band that everyone called talent-less in their time, influenced so many guitar players it's not even funny. And their talent compared to today's rock is light years beyond anyone that hits the stage today, because they have decades of experience. Every festival they play at, they constantly blow every proceeding band away. Even with Paul's broken voice.
Well said.
KISS Rules
Clicked back as soon as I saw that there were 15 ad placements.....Absolute greed.
I wouldn't necessarily say its greed I think it's like anyone who needs $$$ to pay bills and survive. Most here are watching for free but you could watch without if you chose to pay but I doubt most would because a minute to watch an ad is worth the wait.
Mr Garrison.. nicely done sir..
Kiss is the antithesis to The Ramones.
Thank you for this retrospective... it's incredible, but for me, that was not an english speaker when I was young, The Elder sounded as magical as Destroyer, and will be forever be one of my favorite albums. Love Eric Carr to death!
Love them or hate them they are good at what they do! I’ve got in to Kiss back in 77’ and still listen to them still one of my favorites bands Rock n roll over was very under rated, after love gun it was the last of a good thing
KISS RULES 🤘🤘
I love the old stuff....it just rocks.
Dude, I enjoyed both parts and I really enjoyed your honest opinions. Much like you, I'm a sucker for the catchy 80's metal that they put out and I don't care what others think. Good stuff.
Kiss is the greatest. I saw their big rock concert and it was totally kickass.
Correction! Bruce is a hell of a guy! Never heard a bad thing about him Ever
Bob Rowe he was very creepy towards a friend of mine.
DownFall NetWork what? Really!?
And he was a dick to her the second time she met him too.
DownFall NetWork sorry to hear that!
i have met Bruce a few times and my buddies as well...and we all say he is the nicest guy ever. I even sat with him in a strip club and he was sweet to the women so....? For the record it was Bruce,Eric Singer and John Corabi during a KISS convention. The whole lot were so nice. They were more interested in us the fans than the strippers. A Tesla song came on and Eric Singer started playing air guitar and i quickly backed him up with air drums......lol. Such a great night.
Paul Stanley was coked out of his mind during the making of Destroyer? I've never heard that anywhere before.
Me neither. In his book, Paul said the extent of his chemical use never went beyond alcohol and a little pot here and there. It is known however that Bob Ezrin was coked up the entire time but it was the 70's. It was largely accepted in the music business.
Tommy Turner the retards that make these videos constantly get stuff like this wrong especially in the Alice Cooper video. Nobody does there research lmao. They claim everyone was coked up and drunken and high all the time when that wasn’t the truth till the late 70s and early 80s when he quit drinking and switched to crack.
Paul never did that shit
Paul never did coke. Totally wrong thing to say. Bob Ezrin, Bill and Peter did and Ace started because of Ezrin while recording Destroyer. It's in Ace's book.
That's because it never happened. This guy doesn't know Kiss. This is only 1 in a book full mistakes he makes here.
The confusion around The Elder is part of what makes it cool imo.
You are a absolute KISS fan meaning the true fans think the same way as you and talk shit but at the end of the day we love the classic songs ! Good job! A lot of work buddy thanks
Longer the episode the better in my opinion!
RIGHT ON man.
Kiss are the metal equivalent to the Beatles. No other band are like that.
Love your vids man i think in the first show with makeup aces makeup was pretty much what it kept being. i think it's safe to say his makeup helped set the tone for the boys.
The hilarious thing about Gene taking credit for the rock horns is he outs himself whenever he talks about being a huge comic book nerd. Cause he got it from Steve Ditko, the artist who co-created Dr. Strange and Spider-Man.
Kiss is one of my favorite classic 19 70s bands
Good job, dude. The editing is great on this.
Rocket Ride is Ace's answer to Love Gun
Wtf No lmao I know right. ACE rules
Not really
Creatures of the night is my favorite kiss album
Frampton Comes Alive was also a monster LIVE album that came from nowhere off the back a few albums that nobody had heard.
Jack Roberts although true music fans would have known his work with humble pie.
I can show you like 50 magazines from the 70s that refer to Kiss as heavy metal. People seem to think heavy metal didn't even exist in the 70s....well it did and it was bands like Sabbath, Kiss, Aerosmith, Judas Priest, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, etc. Show me any other song from 1975 that is as metal as Parasite
the term heavy metal was coined by Steppenwolf in their song Born To Be Wild before any of those bands came out
Black Diamond by Kiss.
The real metal bands hadn't come into the light yet so if course they were gonna confuse some bands as metal early on
@@charlesmarriott451 and who are you to decided which bands are "real" metal?
@@zachary_attackery I was giving my opinion, not trying to argue with you lol
Love your channel dude, can we get a Dead Kennedys retrospective?? 👀👀👀
Fave Kiss albums: 1. “Music From The Elder” 2. “Unmasked” 3. “Destroyer” 4. “Lick It Up” 5. “Dressed To Kill”
xoxo The Clarences
Peter didn’t choose his make up because he loved cats. He chose it because he survived on the streets growing up and felt he had nine lives like a cat. Ace Frehley was not always spaced out. He was into science fiction, UFOs and extra terrestrial stories. That’s why he chose Space Ace. Gene Simmons never thought of himself as a "demon". He was a fan of horror movies, comic books and classic monsters. The only one you had even kind of close is Paul Stanley. Although he thought of himself as a star, it was more of a star child.
Great doc! Only one thing: The Wall rules.
Copyright strike in 3...2...1
Also Groundhog Day is still here
I own crazy amounts of Maiden merch, and KISS merch. Both bands put out fantastic music, and fantastic merch. The fact that it bothers people is pathetic. Trooper is also some really good beer.
Kiss will never get the credit they deserve, and if they do Paul will apply it to the current line up, early kiss was hungry and the music was fantastic, most people can’t get past the war paint, but people forget early kiss, when the make up was off nobody knows who they were, that could never happen now it was brilliant
Cool documentary!! But the two of the were clean
I feel the same way about great expectations
I wish part 2 was out. I'm fascinated with their 80s hair metal days and I would love to hear your retrospective about it
This response may be late, but I thought I'd try anyway. Part 2 has already been made, but the only way to get to it is through Wayback. I think it was claimed.
@@blackhabits6408 sweet! thanks for the info
It’s back up rn.
@simplebutnotsolongname6642 thanks! I just watched it
Funny story, that photo from the Wicked Lester album was later used by a band called "Laughing Dogs" for their album
Mainline a "ballad"?
44:14 MY VOLUME IS ALL THE WAY UP!!! OW!!
Ace's solo on Love Gun is his BEST overall!!!
My top 5 KISS songs
1. Psycho Circus
2. God of Thunder
3. I love it Loud
4. Deuce
5. I've had Enough (into the fire)
Really, I think you mean Hard luck woman, Black Diamond, Beth, Cold Gin, and Rock and roll all night? Lol
Actually, "Just a Boy" from the Elder is a great song.
Wrong
The detailed, song oriented commentary tied to video: grade A
If you haven't heard Gene's interview with Terri Gross on NPR, it's AMAZING. Check it out NOW!!!
It's pretty offensive
You wanted the best and you had the best....
The coolest guitarist in the world...
ACE!!!!!
Paul smoked a little weed back in the day. He also took Valium from time to time. He drank during the photo shoot of, Hotter than Hell which is the only known time that he was hammered publicly that I know of.
your a trip man!!! lmao. ACE rules
Agreed , 100,000 years is untouchable. Room Service is the best from DTK IMO.Should have been a concert staple.
Thanks for such a great docu film, it's updating my memories as a British KISS fan from the 70's. If I may offer some criticism? I wish you wouldn't constantly apologise for what KISS are/were! The faux cynical voice is annoying brother... folk will either watch this or not... you don't have to try and get viewers by answering in advance their imagined negative opinions and eliciting contrary responses. KISS are multimillionaires, the deed s done, the die is cast and cooled ... MP3 has put an end to fan worship, many kids will have a token KISS song on their player or on Spotify and they have no interest in who they are. KISS fans of old appreciate your efforts and that's enough... :-) x
I love Unmasked
Pretty darn entertaining and I dug lots of the footage you chose to help bring it all to life even more (for songs that don't have videos or live versions particularly). Only a few nitpicky things if I may; I think at 04:49 that live photo is actually of a tribute band, and not KISS - I could be wrong but it looks like another band.... also, calling "Mainline" a "ballad" struck me as odd. Sure it's a bit lighter fare than some of the other tunes on HTH, and has more of that R&B/boogie-woogie side to KISS, but definitely not a "ballad"...finally, you sort of correct yourself near the end about Eric Carr's reputation with the fans but it can't be overstated enough; there's a reason you NEVER hear a negative word about Eric, and it's thanks to a very well-earned rep for being 1000% awesome with his fans since day one 'til the end. Everyone knows that about The Fox, just wanted to put that in writing here (the same can be said about Bruce Kulick, one of the nicest guys in RnR). Overall, this doc and your '80s KISS one starting with Creatures are lots of fun, so keep up the humorous take and the deep research on the hottest band in the land and I'm sure we'll keep watching.
I consider myself a diehard, but grounded kiss fan. This dude is fuckin spot on! I want him to do a retrospective of each album!
KISS Alive 2 rules!
Love. Everything
Im one of those that fully understood the concept of The Elder, and I put it in my top 3.
Fanatic since age 3 (1976). I'll take Them to my grave
