  • Hello friends! Welcome to my channel One Blessed Mess for this video all about homeschooling through the hard times. We ALL have seasons of struggling - and as Christian mamas, what does this mean for our homeschool? Is it possible to thrive in homeschooling when life looks so...messy?
    If you are new here, hi and welcome! I'm Christie, and I'm a 4th year homeschooling mom to 5 kids (ages 12, 11, 8, 4, and 2!) My husband and I pulled our kids out of public school, moved to our house in the country, and haven't looked back! I love sharing my (authentic + honest) journey with you all, and hope you will join me as we navigate our footing in the world of homeschooling!

    Good morning, Mamas! ☕️ Today's video wasn't planned, but it was something I felt burdened to share with you today. I pray it finds whomever will be blessed by what God is teaching me through trying times. I love you all dearly, and I'm praying you have a blessed week! 💕

    I'm crying. I never write any comments, but you pierced my heart. I started homeschooling during Covid and we were in a tiny apartment. I was an Elementary Educator for 11 years. I had never heard of "unschooling". My kids were barely 4, 6, and 7. I failed. Truly failed...I felt like there was no way I could do it. Last year, I went back to the classroom and my kids went back too. I resigned in late January because I knew I wasn't called to be there any longer. I begged my husband to let me try homeschooling again this school year. He was adamantly against it. I agreed to let the kids could to yet another public school in our new neighborhood. I've been praying this whole school year thus far that the Lord would work on my husband's heart...he is not saved and that causes so many other issues but this is the big hot topic. Every time I bring it up, he scoffs at me like "yeah right!" PLEASE pray with me! I truly feel like turning away from the assignment God has laid on my heart will have consequences. We have a beautiful home now and the kids are all "school age". I wish I wouldn't have given up so easily in the beginning. More homeschool moms need these videos! You're right, it is a high calling and with that comes a lot of responsibility, BUT grace!

      Praying for you too. I’ve heard of so many who committed to submit to their husband with a joyful heart and allow God to fill us with grace to not nag and contend. In that sometimes a husbands heart can be softened. You can pour scripture and truth into your children before and after school. Make THAT your priority, rather than trying to convince your honey. God knows your heart and He loves your children vastly more than you do. I pray you have an incredible testimony some day before your husband, kids and the world of waiting on the Lord for an outcome that He ordains (homeschool or not) with children who rise up and call you blessed. This is bigger! Hang onto Jesus!

      My husband was that way in the beginning too. It took a lot of patience on my part especially as I unschooled my kids. We were part of a charter so that helped because it provided the accountability My husband needed to see that we were doing school type work. My eldest, while in the third grade after being public schooled, was a very reluctant writer, barely made standard for the third grade state testing. A bright , but in attentive child, he just needed what could not be provided in public school. Over the years, my husband realized how different our kids were in a positive way, and I’ve heard this happen to so many homeschoolers. Sometimes all my kids would do would be reading good books.I think as moms we really need encouragement and I encourage you to attend a homeschool convention. There you will be with people who support you and could encourage you and attend talks on the areas that you struggle with or where your husband would like to see some improvement. Today, I have a fifth grader who scored with a quantile level ready for eighth grade math instruction. Top 95 percent of all California per Caaspp. My eldest, the one who didn’t like to write? Winner of the patriots pen essay😮 contest at the local level. Confident writer, budding scientist, 92 and 95 percentile rank in California for ELA and math, completed 9th grade algebra already with an A+. All this I might add, with him doing no evening homework. We got all our work done during the day. If it’s sports and social interaction, your husband is worried about, please reassure him that they can continue sports - my eldest son defensive player of the year in his pop Warner tackle football team and played travel baseball. Youngest one, spent our charter dollars on piano, choir, guitar, art, etc. I could also teach them faith based curriculum. Don’t give up. When I thought all hope is lost, God came through.

    I'm so glad you posted this video. I was on the verge of a mental meltdown today. I work full-time during the day at home and I pulled my 8 and 9 year olds out of public school in October. We have no routine and my girls like to stay up all night and sleep all day while I work. I have been praying all day to figure out if i should send them back to public school so they have structure and a routine. I'm still praying but this video has helped me.

    Thank you!! I am going through a very hard season and this spoke so much life to me. I wish more homeschool moms would open themselves up and talk more on this subject, especially at a raw place of actually currently going through it. I think too many HS mommas think we only want to see the beauty in the homeschool life. We have many beautiful homeschool days that make me stop and think.. this is why we do this!... but sadly we also have days that make me stop and question if we've made the right decision and we are 8 years into this HS journey! I have 4 children in 9th, 7th, 3rd and 1st. We started when my oldest was entering 2nd grade. We took one year off and lived to regret that decision, BUT on my hardest days I reason with maybe putting them back in school because it would just be better for all... even though I KNOW it absolutely would NOT be better. Anyway, thank you for being open and honest. In a sea of beautiful homeschool DITL videos it was so refreshing to find your video that met me right where I am today as I was doing the laundry.... I started the day thinking we were off track and now after watching this video I am reminded we are exactly where we need to be :) And even on our worst days it's still better and less chaotic then the days when my children were in private school and everything that came with it. Please don't stop talking about this!! This is content that more mommas need to hear. I think as Homeschool moms we are so busy trying to "recruit", that we forget to acknowledge that it is hard and maybe new mommas need to know that so they don't get discouraged when they realize two days into homeschooling that it's not that perfect angelic vision that was sold to them through cut up and edited videos and blogs that beautifully describe all the beautiful reasons why. Keep it up! :)

    So timely. 3rd year of homeschool for us and hardest one yet, learning to teach multiple grades with an extremely high-maintenance toddler. I can't tell you how many times I've said to myself "I can't do this!" ... but God has given me the strength to keep pushing forward because I know (that I know, that I KNOW) we're supposed to be doing this. Thank you for reminding me that I'm not alone. ❤️

    I agree. I don't love that my kids see me fail or lose my temper or struggle. But it's so important for my kids to see me struggle in all facets of life so that when they grow and they are struggling they know it's okay and it's normal. I never want my kids to think that they are broken because they thought I was perfect.

    • @OneBlessedMess
      @OneBlessedMess  Před rokem

      YES! I think so many of us grew up with the notion that adults just always "have it together." Now that I'm an adult I can see that we do not, in fact, have it together and that's OKAY! That's why we need our savior to work in us 💕

    • @taniapinacho4774
      @taniapinacho4774 Před 7 měsíci

Thank you so much for sharing this 💕☺️

    God's timing is never wrong. You may have recorded this video 9 months ago, but it was meant for such a time as this, and personally for me tonight. I am a seasoned homeschool momma who has graduated 2 daughters and this is my son's senior year. I quite frankly was researching cyber schools just before I found this video. It has been one hard year after another, and I have completely lost the joy of homeschooling. But your encouragement has reminded me of why I homeschooled in the first place....God told me to. It was His calling for my life. And His grace is sufficient to bring me through this season. Thank you.

But we need to remind ourself that we wear a lot of hats and sometimes school can be math and reading and that’s ok.. but sometimes school can be non existing and that’s ok too. We do so much for our family that not doing school is ok. At the end of the day our children r better off with us doing nothing than at a school being bullied or mistreated by someone having a bad day. This video is great to encourage us and remind us that it’s ok to have off days 💖

    I had my 5th baby three weeks ago and I've been stressing about school since he was a week old. I've tried to hurry up and get back into it when I'm still trying to adjust to breastfeeding again and the postpartum hormones and being sleep deprived and all the things that come with a newborn. I feel like I've been battling upstream. The temptation to give up and put my kids in public school this year has been real. But the real life experience and the relationship aspects of homeschooling are so important, so thank you for reminding me it's okay if everything isn't open books and worksheets.

    Wonderful! We must remember that most of the learning happens when kids are playing. Kids are hardwired to learn through play. Our job as homeschooling parents is to figure out how to weave the essential academics into their play - then the homeschooling is a breeze.
    Most of what I learned as a young child was playing board games. I remember them clearly. I learned how to read and spell by playing Scrabble. I learned arithmetic and money by playing Monopoly. I learned how to think by playing Chess and card games. I learned science by playing outside with friends, playing sports and interacting with nature. The play drove an interest in subjects that I was then motivated to learn more about through self-directed reading and research.
    Drop the stuffy curriculum, make learning a game and it becomes easy and fun for everyone!

    As someone who’s seriously considering homeschooling her 3 kiddos, this was so amazing to hear that struggles and bad days are normal. It’s so lovely to hear you open up as you have.
    I’m also interested in starting to follow Christ properly- your videos really make me want too (I wasn’t brought up in a Christian household, although I teach my children the true meaning of Christmas, Easter and the more commonly known stories such as Noah) I was wondering If you had any recommendations on books for me to start with for myself ? Just starting with the bible seems very overwhelming 😂🙈
    Thank you so much xx

    Oh girl most days I feel like giving up. These kids are crazy and sometimes I don't know how much more I can take but when we have a good day, it's so worth it. Honestly I didn't know how much I would change and learn during this journey. It's a wild ride but we will get there. Funny how you mentioned it took you 3 years to really get comfortable homeschooling. We are with an Online Public Charter School and my girl has done that for 3 years. I started her in Pre-K there because I was not confident in my own abilities to homeschool so I thought that would be a good way of getting to be able to homeschool but having them lead me with curriculum and help. This is our 3rd year and I have decided to go it alone next year. So it took me 3 years also to gain the confidence and really find my groove!! I'm sorry we all go thru this but honestly it makes me feel better knowing it's normal to want to throw in the towel and normal to have those horrible days. The hardest part is to stop trying to mimic public school. It's so engrained in us. I think that's what causes most my stress. Anyways girl, thanks for the vid and keep rocking at that homeschool life!!

    I'm struggling feeling like a failure at getting those books done with my ADHD child. I felt called to, but question it every day. I have my MA in education but tracking a class is easier than with my own child. Thank you for speaking to me and the encouragement.

      You are absolutely NOT a failure! The ability to work WITH your child's needs and not against them is part of the reason homeschooling has so much freedom and permission to give grace - not only to ourselves, but our children as well! 💕

    This is an on time word, and thank you for being humbled and allowing God to use you to speak to all of us. I have been struggling and battling with sending my son back. But I continue to remind myself that God wants me here. This is where we belong. I feel like I've been failing him cause he doesnt ever want to focus, if im watching my grandson he cant work, if i have something else to work on while he works independently he can't do that either. I sit back and ask the Holy Spirit where it is that I need to let go and let Him. He also has been working in me as well. I'm just rambling now.
