  • Going into Generation 9 with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, I honestly didn't know what to expect; however, I never believed that I would be getting one of the best, if not the best, story in the franchise and that's all thanks to the game's final location, Area Zero. I'll be discussing all things Area Zero from the bosses to the flowers to see why it's so effectively constructed. Enjoy!

Minor detail, but I just wanted to point out that the second Area Zero theme being for Paradox Pokémon is a misconception. It's only used during the story event where you get swarmed outside Zero Lab.
For all other battles, it uses the standard Area Zero battle theme. Yes, even for the legendary in the post game.

I’d like for some mysteries to remain, but I’m also equally excited to see the DLC tackle some of it like the third Legendary and maybe the strange symbols.

I do love how the Professor AI isn’t the bad guy here.
They easily could have made this simply “Real prof dead, now the AI version is taking it to extremes because they’re a robot”. Or, worse, “AI magically grows morals and feelings”.
Instead they have the cool, logical AI analyze that situation once they’re free to act on their own, and, by using simple facts and logic, something AIs are literally made to do, they come to the conclusion of “No this time plan is hazardous and illogical with no real benefit, time to call in backup to stop this project”.
In a way, they’re the true hero of the story, because literally no one else had a clue as to what the professor had been up to in Area Zero.

    • @tultiden2040
      @tultiden2040 Před 8 měsíci +2

Exactly, it turned out to be the complete opposite, in fact. The real professor was so obsessed with making his/her conception of paradise be a reality that they dismissed the ecological damages the Paradox Pokemon could deal. Meanwhile, the AI professor framed an entire plan around having you shut down the time machine and, consequently, itself. I'm curious if the DLC will put any more background into how operations in Area Zero were ran at that time, and whether there were more people than just Turo and Sada in the exploration.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Area Zero is one of the most memorable experiences I think I'll ever have in the series, because it honestly feels pulled out of a different game like SMT. Plus, I love how you actually see your three buddies following you on your first visit and they play off each other so well, with Penny's snark grounding everyone, Nemona's hilarious brick brain breaking tension, and Arven's lore dumping. I won't forget this game for a long time, that's for sure.

    • @KayJulers

Area zero is the point where I fully realized just how good pokemon scarlet and violets characters actually were.
Nemona was always a joy to fight and I loved seeing her battle junky self interact with everyone. Penny was just great and I loved her interactions with arven, especially on the topic of their parents and on that note ive never felt more awful for a character in pokemon than with arven.
In short: Best friend squad is great and I hope we can get writing and characters this good in generation 10.

funnily enough I didn't like Nemona all that much, I thought she was annoying and quite honestly a bit creepy. And while I still think that she isn't a good character to carry a narrative, (the reason victory road is my least favorite story... it's lucky it has Larry, sadly he is on screen too little to save it) she is a great supporting character that plays really well off the other two.
Making me want to have them in future content/dlc, something only Looker really achieved for me in pokemon.

Howdy, frens! Thank you so much for watching and two things I want to clarify briefly:
    1. I used very intentional wording like "confirmed" death and "by Pokemon" because of Mr. Fashion Lion himself, Lysandre. Although it makes plenty of sense that he would be un-alived in XY, it hasn't been officially confirmed. SV, on the other hand, is very clear about Turo/Sada's fate, which I really appreciated!
    2. With the exception of some edits, this script was originally written before the patch dropped. There certainly are some frame dips in Area Zero, but my two subsequent revisits to Area Zero seemed to run much smoother than they did in my original play-through. Glad to see some improvements were made.

It was honestly really amazing how much S/V's endgame borrowed from the design cues of its now sister series Xenoblade to push its narrative into unexplored territory. On an objective point, that makes it a truly unique and standout experience that will be treasured in the series for years to come

  • @AustinMmmmmm

That final Turo battle gave me chills, even more when I saw how the machine worked, it makes perfect gameplay/lore sense that if you can send a poke ball through a time machine to try and bring back a Pokémon, logically, you would only use master balls for assured success. As there construction assures success, even on arceus.
And DEAR LORD THAT THEME GOES SO HARD.
Paired with the drop that your new freinds father is dead and before you is his cold replica who only obeys his programming.
As close to and ideal final fight as possible imo

It also felt like there was a semi-meta-bait too where I was beginning to think, "oh, the Crater is going to be DLC, huh?" Because of the way they display it on the map and such. And then when it was part of the story and NOT DLC, it almost felt better than it would have.

Super good video as always, Area Zero is really damn special. It captures a surreal atmosphere and feeling of mystique that I feel like I'm always chasing in games. the feeling of being rewarded by stumbling upon something so secret that it's otherworldly is really a big part of why I love Pokémon in the first place and Area Zero does it *so* well. I loved the heading down as a group, the design of how beautiful the area looks, plus the reveal of the Professor being dead the whole time just completely blew me away. Honestly had felt this way about an ending since Xenoblade 2. Now version difference that was pointed out to me is that the AIs protest differently against the Paradise Protection Protocol.
Apparently, AI Sada’s eyes glitch out more when being consumed by the protocol, while AI Turo twitches/spazzes out more. The thing with AI Sada’s eyes could imply that it more of emotionally tried to fight it off; the thing with AI Turo’s more violent twitches could imply that it tried to physically fight it off by attempting to lock it’s joints. Alas, their fight was in vain as they ultimately succumbed to the protocol, to tired to fight any more.

This game truly has the best character roster. Pre-Switch era the rivals you constantly encountered ranged from one note (R/B), boring (B/W and 2), to flat out annoying (X/Y), but Sw/Sh and especially these games have given us great rivals. In between the characters, the story, to the battle mechanics (goodbye annoying Legends combat), this is probably my favorite entry in the entire series. Can't wait for some DLC.

The music was incredible, the new Pokémon designs are basically all impeccable, and I really enjoy the whole paradox Pokémon concept (made better by all of them being at least kinda cool, if not outright awesome). Some interesting things to speculate about. If you rest in the last research lab, the music that normally plays is distorted. Also something that is really interesting and not really delved into, terestialising seems kind of parasytic, evident by the trees that slowly morph into crystals and the research building completely encased in one. I really enjoyed Scarlet and felt it was a return to form narratively after the very weak Sword/Shield...although I do think I like Galar better than Paldea overall. The only thing I didn't love about the Treasure Hunt setup is that you still had to complete all three paths to unlock the endgame. It would have been cool if you could go at it with just one or two of your companions and skip a third if you just weren't interested in fighting gyms/Team Star/titans. Not to say I wouldn't have gone back to finish the league to get Nemona on my side if I knew it was an option, but it would have been a better REASON to go back and finish whichever leg of the journey you were least interested in.

When I heard the music in this area I lost it. This is some of the best music I've ever heard in a pokemon game! It's a shame it took 9 generations and countless spinoffs to get here, and the graphics/performance are garbage, but I still love this game!
My biggest complaint about Area Zero is how Arven describes it as a terrible place, so I expected it to be a dark labyrinth of caves with little zones tailored to the paradox pokemon, sort of like Ultra Space environments. Instead we got this really bright and colorful area, which I don't think fits the overall tone. The bottom half with the caves and crystals is good, and I feel it would have made a good environment for Koraidon/Miraidon or Roaring Moon/Iron Valiant.
It's a shame that's not what we got, but I still like what we did get! They just raised my expectations too high.
