Thank you for this vidio,I lived on an old dutch barge for 15 years just outside Bath Marina and always wanted to do this trip but never did find the courage, well done you !
Thank you
How long ago were you on that barge?
@@narrowboatmaggiemay Hi , about seven years ago, really miss it.had to leave due to ill health .loved every minute of it, there's a vidio on my site of my last little trip!
@@russellblampied just watched that Russel. Brought back memories of our time on the K&A.
Really liked Bath
Before getting our boat we used to take our camper to Bath Marina site occasionally and walk into the city for a meal and a few drinks!
For me, it’s still the best city we have visited in this country. We spent one new year on the canal above the rugby ground. Amazing
Really like that BSA 600 on your channel too!
Back in the 1970s my family mover down from London to Lydney as my father was the works superintendent on the Severn Wye Cable tunnel built from behind the Aust service area under the old Severn Bridge to Beachley Point in the Army Apprenticeship College grounds and on under the River Wye to Stonehouse.
In our spare time we water skied off the old Ferry slip way at Beachley next to the Ferry Inn. We used the Shoots Channel to train beginners as the waters were a bit calmer and they didn't fall off so often. But being the 2nd fastest river in the world for the rise and fall of the tide great care had to be taken. So hats off to you doing it aboard a narrow boat.
I once watched a tug and string of 3 barges enroute to Lydney plywood with logs, the last barge was ahead of the tug as she passed the Shoots. I found out later this was very common.
There is works ongoing to reconnect the canal back up from the boat yard just off the Sharpness Canal to Stroud, so that woill be a good detour if when it joins up.
Thanks for posting and reminding me off the good old days on and under the Severn, Stay safe.
Wow that’s amazing to hear your experiences on The Severn
Thanks for sharing that
Brilliant video, loads of information - I like the way each feature comes up with a name, or description too. Well done!!
Thanks for watching John. Glad you liked it!
Very interesting
Many thanks for all your comments Richard. It is really useful to have feedback
Brave stuff, well done.
Thank goodness the engine didn't let you down on that powerful section of water. Bad enough on the trent of course, but better there than in the Severn estuary.
Thanks for documenting and sharing your experience!
👍
Yeah , I did think we were lucky it didn’t happen on the estuary!
Thanks for watching Dave.
Amazing!!! I wish I had the courage to do that trip. One of the best vlogs that I have watched, thank you for sharing.
You are welcome
Thanks for watching
Fascinating vlog, not seen this route done on CZcams before so thank you for this ... subscribed!
Thank you very much.
Glad you enjoyed it
Good work. Fortunately for my wallet I only had to spend three hours in Portishead marina when I did the same voyage. It’s an expensive do especially if you take a pilot from Bristol to Portishead (which is unnecessary) and what with the fuel polishing. But like you say it’s well worth it.
"Well that's our first tidal river done" Congrats that's the one that nobody else does, the only other you tube one I recall was the wye invader. To be fair I think they were very knowledgeable guys because they also took it up the wye on a flood tide so they could clear the weir to get as far as Monmouth. Not that I am suggesting you attempt this, but worth watching the video to watch them fight the river at one stage. Well done, you have cracked Everest, Kilimanjaro will be a piece of cake after this.
Hi Simon
Yes I have seen a video of the Wye Invader 2 going around The Noose and over the flooded Maizemore Weir. It looked horrendous!!
Very brave but no doubt very experienced boaters.
Glad you enjoyed the video.
There’s one coming up shortly about the tidal Trent that went a bit wrong for us!!
Great video! We are planning to do this trip next year so this was very useful. Not sure if I am reassured or terrified now.
Sorry if I gave that impression Bryan, it really isn’t that terrifying!!
Excellent video! We did exactly this journey in July 2022 with a great Pilot called Tim, part of the same company you used.
Glad you enjoyed the vlog and the trip too!
Tim piloted the wide beam that travelled with us. We were pleased they were there for our own peace of mind!!
Great video. That looks absolutely terrifying 😄 . You're brave taking your home on that journey. I'd definitely take a pilot as well
It actually wasn’t too bad
Unlike our trip onto the tidal Trent!
Have you watched that one?
@@narrowboatmaggiemay not yet. I'll watch it though. Good luck
Thank you.
You're welcome!
You were lucky (or I was unlucky). Came down the other way last year in June. Left Sharpness at 5.30am, coming through the second bridge a Westerly wind sprung up unexpectedly. Water was coming up to 1/2 way up the cratch - I was looking thru cratch glass and then seawater. But.......
Still amazing fun and I would recommend the trip to anyone.
Flipping heck, that sounds a bit scary Peter.
Did you do the whole trip to Bristol in one day?
@@narrowboatmaggiemay Hi - yes. Left at 05.30, 2.50 hours to Portishead, waited 3 hours then up in to Bristol in 90 mins. I still really enjoyed the journey.....
Brilliant - loved it - apart from the cuddly toy, sorry
Yeah, cuddly toy mostly stays inside now!!
Very good vlog, enjoyed the journey, thanyou for sharing. I have to say the music was louder than your voice which was a little distracting,
Glad you enjoyed it Sheila.
Sorry about the music
Hopefully the latest vlog has improved as I now have a better microphone
Great vlog, who are you insured with, they seem reasonable.
Sorry for late reply Malcolm. Insured with Euromarine. Thanks for watching
Hi, One of the stills at the end of the Vlog looked like an old Mersey Ferry, I think it was Egremont, if not it was Leasow. Would like to have seen some video of her, or a clearer image. Great Vlog thou.
I’d see if I have any clearer images
Thanks
You are right
Just done some research and it was up for sale at Sharpness last year as a business project

That’s amazing!
Thanks for your input
@@narrowboatmaggiemay Hi, Thank you for the update on the Egremont. I have sailed on her 100's of times when she was a ferry on the Mersey. Take Care.
Egremont is still at sharpness as of December 2023.
@@thegregdavieschannel Thank you very much for the update.
Great but bin the music
Have been across that bridge..do surfers still ride the bore.....
Yes . that will be in the next vlog !!
who were you cruising with
Graham on wide beam”The three of Us”
Sorry but imvho a narrowboat on the Severn Sea is asking for trouble!
Yes, I think you could be right Geoffrey
We can't hear what you are saying?
Yeah sorry Tom
I think I’ll edit and turn down the music in places
I probably need an external mic as well really
Thanks for the constructive comment
Very interesting thanks. Subscribed, but please lose the music, it is not necessary and is just a distraction.
Point noted ,thanks
No back slaps from me. That was a stupid thing to do, that river is an absolute killer, even for proper vessels with powerful engines let alone doing it in a bath tub for a lark. I went to sea school at Sharpness and saw that river every day. You were very lucky.
Roger, lots of narrow-boats do this trip every year. But you do need the advice and experience of the local pilots to guide you.
Sometimes , it is simply staggering the stupidity and foolhardy of some people . A narrowboat simply cant cope with the unoredictable tidal eddies and bad weather that can come from nowhere in the Bristol Channel . A narrowboat, once it has broken down can only "heave to" which means it lies in the trough of the waves sideways on and will turn turtle . A narrowboat with just a hull speed of pehaps 5 mph cannot punch a 5knot current and anybody foolhardy enough to attempt the Sharpness /Avonmouth trip without 1/ an escort vessel equiped for life saving 2 / a competant crew that can read a chart and NOT rely on electronic aids 3/ Lifejackets Flares and a life raft on hand in case of emergency . Crew should be briefed on evacuation and the Swansea coastguard alerted beforehand and when the destination is reached . I would also have on hand a good holding anchor , and a Bible .
A competent pilot accompanied us Fiona
He has 25 years experience of the estuary and we felt comfortable with this.
WHY WHY WHY Have you got that awful crap music. I want to hear what your'e saying as we're thinking about doing your trip but from Sharpness..
Apologies for that Chrys.
I have yet to get the sound levels correct. Think I need a sound recorder and mic
good luck with trip
I only got to 1:59 and then checked the comment to see if anyone else had my thoughts on the music.
Just ditch the music, news readers don't need it do they.
Will watch the rest now as I helped construct a tunnel under where you are going.
please turn off the incidental music whilst talking
Sorry ! I had to turn your video off as the music was too bloody loud, could hardly hear a word you were saying as well !!! 😞 Rubbish !!!
Apologies, think I’ll redo that audio
