- A very unique way of changing the Blades On A Ventrac 4500 Tractor. Time for the Ventrac 4500 tractor and the tough cut deck to get some much needed maintenance. In this video I change the blades after a long season mowing heavy brush and get the Ventrac ready for the spring.

Worktunes are awesome and inexpensive, take the music or audio book with you!
Absolutely! Ive run them over with the Ventrac TWICE and they still work!
@@JoeTheFarmer They make tedium tolerable.
5:07 Good video, but just as a heads up the blades are not meant to be flipped, rather they should be rotated (in the same up/down orientation) to a spindle that rotates in a different direction.
One reason is because if you think about how it cuts, now you will be 'digging' into materials with the blades in that orientation. The cutting edge is higher than the 'bottom' of the blade so you will cut something with the higher leading/cutting edge and then 'dig' into it as the lower bottom of the blade shunts itself into the material. If you cut with the blades in the correct orientation, cut material is hit with the lower leading/cutting edge and then lifted up rather than the stumps/base of things being pushed down.
You can verify this in page D-2 of your the HQ680 manual where it says "The unused side of each blade becomes the cutting edge by switching blades to a spindle of the opposite rotation."
Actually a correction, the OLD HQ680 manual states that, the NEWER manual doesn't, so I am not sure you could have actually known that without the benefit of running commercial lawn care equipment where flipping blades is a big no-no, even when there isn't a wing on it.
That is actually very helpful. I wouldn’t have thought that would be an issue mowing thorns, privet, etc but it makes sense. When I bought the machine it came with a manual for the power unit but not the tough cut. I haven’t noticed much of a cut difference but it lends more kudos to the Ventrac design team. In the future I’ll likely just rotate (unless short on blades…lol). And brother, I am not a professional at all. Learning on the go like the rest of us so advice and positive encouragement is always welcome here. I’m just like all the other folks that watch us work on YT; a guy with a big yard and a camera. 😁👍🏼👊🏼
I wonder why they took this out of the manual.
I just took my blades off for the first time and one of the blades was facing in the “down” direction already so either someone installed them incorrectly OR they don’t care what position they’re in.
Only 2 of the 3 blades can be moved to a different spindle… so either you have to flip one of them or always have an extra set handy and sharpened.
Seeing that only 2 of the 3 blades can be rotated to a different spindle, that they took out that snippet from the manual, that one of my blades was already on upside down, and that the cut quality doesn’t really change…. Seems to me like it probably doesn’t matter.
Hey Ryan! I don’t think it matters. I think when it comes to cutting woody debris rpms matter more than how the blade is installed. My rotary cutter on the tractor doesn’t have an edge at all and cuts good at 540
Just did the same thing last Friday.
I used the big 18v Milwaukee impact, took the first one off no problem.
Would not take off the second blade at all, until my brother in-law said " hey your only on power level two!"
Dang, changed the power to full power, and off the bolts came no problem.
Re-sharpened my second set of blades too, now I'm ready for the next time.
Thanks,
Bill
Wow! Sounds like you had an easier job than I did. Of course I picked the one day it was 80 and humid in the winter. Lol. Hope you all are doing well! Enjoying your channel too!
@@JoeTheFarmer We put some teflon tape on so it might go easier next time.
Great channel Joe, learned a lot, thanks
Thanks buddy. Learning a lot from you all as well. Great to have our community.
That did not look hot at all. I'm sure the moisture on your shirt was just sheer Joy of enjoying this simple maintenance project! LOL nice work buddy!
Yep. Was hot and humid in the fall. Go figure! Strange weather man
My son hit a steel hitch block and snapped the bolt holding the blade on the counter-rotating blade (left from below). It will be fun to easy-out the bolt as 100% of the easy-outs I’ve seen are designed for RH bolts (i.e., they are, themselves, LH treads). Might have to adios the bolt and mount.
Yikes! Yeah; seems to be the guest operator that allow us to learn how to fix it. 🤣🤣🤣
COD. "Call on Dad." Of course, he pranged the LF tread bolt, not one of the others. Time for new blades, anyway.
@JosephGreenleaf 🤣🤣🤣. COD is brilliant! Haven’t heard that one yet. Lol
There's still time on Cyber Monday to get a 1/2" drive Dewalt impact wrench!! You're welcome, Joe!
I have one buddy! Used it in the video!
Wait; just re-read. Not a 1/2”. What; you didn’t think the pipe on a breaker was efficient? 🤣
@@JoeTheFarmer Just trying to help Mrs Farmer with your Christmas list. 🌲🎁
Well played. 🙌🏼👍🏼
@@JoeTheFarmer Here's a second Brad telling you to get a 1/2". They don't seem like something you really need, but once you have it you realize 'oh wow, I should have gotten this sooner'. Even just the peace of mind you have for tire maintenance and changes with that tool is worth it to me, let alone all the other stuff you can use it for.
👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Joe, now that some time has passed, how was the cut quality with the blades up-side down?
No difference at all. Still love this machine 3 years later. Its essential.
Wait.... What is a grease zerk???
It’s that dry metal thing on your machines that squeak’s!!! 🤣
I've had to cut mine off more than once, hit stuff so hard that a break the breaker bar
Ahhhhh. Well; if we could be like Bill Smith we wouldn’t even need a breaker bar! Just a Milwaukee impact. I realized while editing the that I also called a trailer hitch pin a cotter pin. 🤣🤦🏻♂️
If the woman don't find you handsome they can a least find you handy.
🤣🤣🤣. Truth!
Red Green
?
@@JoeTheFarmer Red Green is a sitcom from the 90s it's kind of stupid but I liked it. It's about a guy who makes stuff with duck tape. I didn't think anyone would remember it.
That actually sounds pretty entertaining. I remember when the “MythBusters” made a boat from duct tape. Was pretty awesome in my book. Lol
Look at AET Lube Shuttle
Much better grease guns
I’m so far down the Dewalt ecosystem that it just makes it easier to have one battery system. But looks like a great tool for sure.
@@JoeTheFarmer yep, I ordered more Milwaukee batteries since there are now double battery tools. Even on EBay, 2 batteries were $400.
Yikes!
That’s unreal man. You would think batteries would be getting cheaper. I have so many 20v Dewalt batteries it will never make sense to change tools
@@JoeTheFarmer retail was $540 before sales tax, etc. then you add a 6 port charger. All of which supports your position that your battery investment drives your tool choices.
