- I got the roosting bars done with a little modification done to it and I think it came out nice. Now my chickens can poop their brains out without making a mess on the back wall.

Hi Pete. Great video! Though I'm 74 years plus widow, handy with some tools, I'm going to give these ideas a try. My chickens are in a coop I made 3 years ago that they need to be moved from so I have purchased a small metal shed to turn into a chicken coop for my chicken girls. When it arrives, if my grandson can help, great, if not I have to fall back on the skills my husband taught me. But your ideas about the hard board, and roosting stands seems to be a do-able to catch the poop and better cleanups. Anyway, Pete thanks for the ideas. God bless!
In my 20years experience in raising chickens, ours akways headed for those 2x4 every time. It's all we use now.
Thanks for giving your livestock the best quality of life. I can see this in your videos your a kind and knowledgeable person who cares for there livestock.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Can't wait to see the rest of the videos on this coop build. If I was a chicken I would want to live in this coup! The palace of chicken coops. Great job! 🐔
Thank you 👍
Gotta say that sand "pit" under roosting bars Is super handy in my new coop. Great idea. Thx
Thank you 👍
@@petebeasttexashomesteading A set of bars this size you'd need a snow shovel and a grinder, to make your own kitty litter scoop.
I like the board flat as well. I live in Ohio where we have very cold winters, to lay on their feet is how they keep them from getting frost bite
I used sheets of white, dry erase board in our coop. Hopefully it will work like I envision it should.
My birds are loving the flat.
I love your roost idea! I have incorporated it into my new coop. It really gives me the opportunity to clean under the roost area very easily as my coop is 5x8 and is about waist high, so it is not a walk-in coop. Your design really makes my coop come together on the inside.
Thanks for sharing your design. I’m redoing the roosting bars in my coop, as all my girls want to roost on the same bar!!
Looks good. Thanks for the video. I build roosts out of stair stringers and 1X2 strips. I screw them together as a unit so I can easily move them to clean and disinfect the floor underneath. They are not permanently attached to the coop walls.
👍
Awe man thats a fantastic idea! Can you link me to a page with a picture?
Hello Pete. Love the new roosts. Looking forward to see how it all comes together.
Hello Rita, I can't wait until it's all done and we can order the new chicks.
Your project is so good for me to follow
I use 2inch tree branches with the bark on..My chickens love it..
Just viewed your video, Awesome Roost Bars. I'm going to try and make them.
Great work as always Pete! Might want to keep that chicken wire handy, you are right to suspect them heading for the rafters after that nice set of stairs you just built. Keep up the good work, you inspire so many.
Thank you 👍
It's a great coop. Good luck!
Bird x netting will keep them out of the rafters. My girls are flat footed and like the 2x4’s. I use feed bags to protect the wall. And I LOVE the sandbox...makes for quick and easy clean up 👍🏼
The net is a good idea 👍
Thank you kindly sir for demonstrating how to build this I appreciate it
Love the videos. Please keep them coming. We built our own coop but knowing how much it cost i would have done what you did. Hindsight is 20/20.
Thank you 👍
Nice progress. I agree this height will be enough for the ladies 🧐 Looking forward to seeing updates Pete. Thank you
Thank you 👍
Pete, it looks great, hope it works out well for you and the family.
Thanks 👍
Roosting bars are coming along nicely. I hope you show the build of the poop tray underneath, I'm going to model my shed after yours this spring. Love your videos 💚👍👍🐓🙏
Thanks, we'll be putting lots of wood shavings down under the roost and when it's time to clean, we'll be sweeping it out to the compost pile.
Save yourself some time and get an impact driver. Nice work!
👍 from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
Thank you 👍
You may want to put some type of wax like car wax on the whiteboard. Behind the roost. It will really make cleaning easy. Your wife can put the wax on the vent hood over her cook top. I had to clean the hood. It was a job trying to get the grease, and dust mix from off the top of the hood. After I coated it with a car wax. I can take a paper towel, And it wipes right off.
Great idea 👍👍
Thanks for the tip!
GREAT video, loved it Pete...Shed is looking like a chicken coop...and looks great!!!!
Thank you 👍
You could use marlite FRP on the lower half of walls. It comes in different colors is water proof and you’ll never have to paint it.
Thanks, I'll look into it.
Nice job ... excellent idea !
Thank you very much!
As always enjoy your videos.
I appreciate that!
Growing up in Mississippi in the 50's 60's. Our farm manager gave me 5 bantam chickens. We had Road Island Red. They crossed. Made a beautiful larger chicken. But they would roost in the china berry trees. The R.R. rooster was no match for the Bantam cross rooster. He would get beat up all the time.
🙂👍
Great idea Thank you
Thank you 👍
It’s the finest, most luxurious chicken coop I have ever seen. How much would you have to charge for your eggs to pay for it? 🤑
🙂👍
👍👍
nice job
Thanks!
looks good
Thanks
What length is the bottom board and the board that is on the 45?
can you do an update??
Looks great, but chickens can't grip a 2 x 4, suggest using 1" dowel or smaller stock for them to hold onto. Positive feedback.
I haven't had any issues with that. I have the same setup in my old coop but I'm sure either way will work. The only thing I like about the flat 2x4 is that they can sit on their paws and keep them warm in cold weather.
Chickens are not particularly perching birds. They roost on their flat feet and keel bone. Of course they CAN grip, I've had pullets roosting on the narrow edge of a piece of 1/2" plywood nest divider, the older girls chased them off the flat roost. I have both 2x4 on the flat and 4" round fence pole roosts, the girls use both equally.
👍
Pete you are too much. I have a chicken coop down here in Deep East Texas that could use some of your imagination 😉
🙂👍
How did the panels do against the poop?
Thanks for sharing. How far apart ar the boards from top to middle and middle to bottom?
I want to try and make this roost for my coop. Can you tell the measurements of the wood that is nailed to the wall? Thank you
🌺🌸🌺🌸👍👌
nice work👌
Thanks 🤗
Pete, i am expanding our coop and need to build new roosting bars. I am a novice carpenter, so would you please let me know the angles you use. I know you go by eye but i still need your input. Thanks. West Texas is my spot just west of Ft. Worth, "Where the West Begins."
Just get a really long branch, it's more natural for the chickens and lets the poop fall off
Looks great! Are you putting the sand box under the roosts?
Blessings
Thanks, we will not use the sand method but we'll be putting lots of wood shavings under the roost, and when it's time to clean, we'll sweep it into a wheel barrow and put it into a compost pile.
@@petebeasttexashomesteading awesome... I'm redoing our chicken coop in the spring and love what you do... it just makes since... so we are going with a different style coop, as nothing available around here like yours, however the inside will be much the same. Thanks for sharing all your ideas...
Blessings
Hi Pete...how long after you polyurethane the roosts do you need to wait before placing baby chicks in the coop?
A day or two would be fine
@@petebeasttexashomesteading Thank you!
The bars don't clear the drop zone.
Please give me the cut sizes of the boards used?
I have no idea what the sizes were, I just had the idea in my head and did it on a 45 degree angle.
What wooden items sell best?
They will go to highest point on them rafters
😮
Is that vinyl flooring? Did you put shavings on it or left it like that ?
Yes it's vinyl flooring and I added pine shavings on top. The vinyl will protect the wood floor underneath and make it easier to clean.
How did the tile board work out? did it hold up?
I ended up putting plastic panels over it because I was worried the chicken poo would warp the tile board. Here's what I put over it. www.homedepot.com/p/1-16-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-Plastic-Panel-63003/202090190
@@petebeasttexashomesteading That was my thoughts too, I have it on my bathroom ceiling and I remember putting it up, and can't imagine it being in a chicken coop, lol...I've thought a couple coats of good polystyrene might work but just don't know...
It's melamine
USDA did a study a few years ago and calculated that it costs an average of $3.00 to produce a dozen eggs from pastured chickens. It begs the question... why in the heck do people sell the $3 eggs for $1? Why not just get up every morning... burn a five dollar bill, and save all that siht shoveling?
I know it's not cheap but the eggs are more nutritious and the manure gets composted and put into the garden which will feed us.
Could you give us some deminations?
I did in the video.
Laminated
I just checked out the product on Home Depot and it's an acrylic coating.
What are the heights of your bars?
The bottom bar is 2ft off the floor.
😊👍
Thanks
