The most amazing thing was when I read Dave Semenko's book and he wrote I'll never fight Nick Fotiu because we are such good friends. I was shocked!
One time Semenko tried to get agitator Neil Sheehy and Nick grabbed him and told Semenko to leave it alone and said he won't fight anyway and will just turtle. Semenko wrote 18,000 people got all excited thinking the two toughest guys are going to fight and I knew it would never happen that I liked Nicky too much!
      I was shocked!
Nilan talks nice about Nick also!
      Amazing!

Dave Brown could have played any sport he wanted. He was a first class pitcher who was drafted by a mlb team. He was also our high school quarterback who could have done that as well if he put his mind to it. Great interview. Thanks to Knuckles for having him on.

Dave Brown and I were somewhat neighbors in rural So. Jersey… I’d see him around town, but only approached him twice… The first time was at the Pole Tavern Circle WaWa, in Elmer, NJ. Back then they sold lunch meat, Brownie had both hands full of lunch meat, and still stayed and talked hockey for about 45mins… He could’ve easily told me he had to go, but he didn’t… He was pretty talkative and honest, I’ll never forget that interaction, he is an awesome guy !!!

Dave Brown was voted the most feared fighter by the NHL enforcers in the first edition of tough guys magazine. Great enforcers write books about their hockey fights encounters. Stu Grimson wrote in his book that Brown was the most feared fighter in the NHL. George Laraque wrote a book . George wrote about his first and only encounter with Dave Brown. Search on Google - George Laraque, the only fight I ran away. Brown was mainly feared because of his tenacious punching power. Dave was notorious for forcing guys to fight him . Joe Kocur was interviewed and mentioned his hockey relationship with Brown in the juniors. Joe Kocur spoke of his NHL encounters with Brown on the ice. Kocur said I was "lucky" I never had to fight him. Joe said, " Thank God." Brown never wanted to fight me. He was 6"5" with a long reach. You don't want to fight a lefty. Kocur said Brown would just skate by and say hi Joey. Win , draw, or rarely lose a fight , Brown fought tooth a nail to the wire. If he rarely lost to a guy . A revenge fight was risky for the opponent. Basically, Dave was avoided as much as possible . Many great fighters said in interviews that Brown was either the toughest guy they fought or the hardest puncher that hit them or both scenarios. Bob Probert, Stu Grimson, Tie Domi, and Gino Odjick admitted it. Craig Coxe said Brownie hit hard. Search on CZcams - Jim Kyte on gearing up to fight Dave Brown. What a fantastic interview. For those that don't know, Dave Brown is considered one of the absolute toughest to ever lace them up. Brownie was known for a very hard left hand. For the undersized Chris to get in a scrap with a shirtless and much larger Brown (thus having nothing to grab on) in a brawl where there are no linesman on the ice is one of the most courageous things witnessed on the ice. Also, Kudos to Brownie for acknowledging the Coxe fight. There is video of Coxe being interviewed about this fight and how Brown did get the jump on him. As a fan having seen that fight a number of times, I always wondered what they were saying to each other. Anyhow, really enjoying the podcasts Knuckles! Keep up the great work.

Loved when Brownie came to the Oilers, riding shotgun after Semenko & McSorley departed...had a season ticket at the time.

I do recall Dave Brown knew when the fight was over and never took it to far.

@@jamescoleman5317 He took it too far several times. There is a vid on yt, where he repeated punched a smaller guy after he was already down and out.

@@stealthbomber2127 So what ? I'm a neutral Habs fan that knows that Todd Ewan as a Montreal player punched quite a few opponents when they were on the ice. Todd the animal was his code name. Brown was the TERMINATOR

I wish Knuckles could have scored more goals too...I loved it when Nilan contributed to the scoring. I remember one night in Montreal, Knuckles scored two goals against the Philadelphia Flyers. Great night.

The big tough guys were always the nicest off the ice. They were often mocked in their youths for being much bigger than other kids, which of course came with physical awkwardness for a period of time. Society tended to be harder on these big kids because they looked like adults but were still kids mentally. When they stepped on the ice they were expected to be tough and were pressured to fight. Pigeon holed immediately not given any chances to play the game. I grew up in Saskatchewan and played junior hockey in the 80’s. I was a skilled player but you needed to be tough regardless. Not in the fighting sense but you had to have tools to protect yourself. I was suspended for spearing, cross checking in the throat and stuff like that. When you could score they came after you. Many sleepless nights for sure. And after spearing an opponent they never bothered you again. So you needed to do some crazy shit to survive.

Great interview! How about getting 2 of the original Philly enforcers legends, Dave the Hammer #8 Schultz and Bob Battleship Kelly #9 from the 70s flyers cup winners. Schultz the All Time penalty minutes King with over 3000 PIM
