    Thiem couldn't enter the main draw at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, wasn't even playing any other tournaments anymore, but chooses Mallorca of all places as one of his last stops before his retirement. The tournament that effectively ended his career three years ago. I can almost sense bitter irony in his decision, as if he was trying to embrace the pain and laugh at all the bad luck he's had in those three years.

    • @mskcouric
      @mskcouric Před 3 dny +2

      I think he's just playing more tournaments since he's getting bounced from so many so early.
      Great career, tough luck with his wrist. I guess Lili Paul-Roncalli is a decent consolation prize for retirement.

      I didn't see so much as ONE powerful passing backhand in these highlights. Does that cause him wrist pain or problems? It's just time for him to retire... for real.

      @operation2096 Did you forget that he took Djokovic to five sets in the Australian Open final that year? Had they faced each other in the US Open final, Thiem could have come out on top that time. So even with the big names, there is no guarantee who would have won.

    We all win when Thiem and Monfils put on a show. Thiem will be one of the great "what-ifs" in tennis. Great player, quality human being. Hope he enjoys his next chapter.

    • @deniss.6205
      @deniss.6205 Před 3 dny +20

      We are ruled by an obsessive "success" oriented society..."what if" actually winning 1 Slam, beating the King of Clay multiple times is actually a GREAT success in itself, why would Thiem have had to win 10 or 24 to be considered a success?

    • @bluekirbyrocks
      @bluekirbyrocks Před 3 dny +10

      @@deniss.6205 Because the big 3 ruined what people perceive as success in the tennis world. Both of these men will be remembered. Domi will be remembered along with Del Potro as one of the few players to ever get a slam in the big 3 era and La Monf will be remembered along with Kygrios as one of the best entertainers in tennis history.

    • @BassByTheBay
      @BassByTheBay Před 3 dny +2

      @@deniss.6205 The OP said nothing about success. Thiem is one of the great "what ifs" specifically _because_ of what he accomplished. He had one of the best head-to-heads against the Big 3.
      I also wonder "what if?" about him since he was poised to take the reins as the Big 3 started aging out. It would be amazing if we had a healthy Thiem battling it out with Sinner, Carli, Nole, Med, and Zverev.

    • @rathauneek2953
      @rathauneek2953 Před 3 dny

      Cant agree with this - he was a multiple GS finalist, took it to the big 3 and had positive h2h with them at one point, and was a GS winner. certainly not one of the great "what ifs" in that we did see his best tennis, we just didn't see it long enough. Nick Kyrgios is probably more of a "what if"

    • @DATennis
      @DATennis Před 3 dny

      @@BassByTheBay makes no sense. Skewed by Big 3. A player peaking and then slowing down to injuries is normal. Ask Thiem, Roddick, Hewitt, Del Potro. They aren't what ifs. Successful careers look like that. Big 3 are anomalies

      He has obviously given up on his career completely. He's visibly out of shape, doesn't and cannot train hard anymore, his wrist doesn't allow him to play competitively anymore. It's been a very long time since his shots were at least a little bit similar to what they used to be years ago. And this will not change. It's over. It's a shame, he was one of the most fantastic players, very close to the big 3 at his peak, unique and irreplaceable, and he could have really achieved much more.

      Many players don't retire the day they announce it. It's a process that typically takes months. He's planning to retire in October in Vienna, an excellent opportunity to share his last match with his home fans. Mallorca was one of the last tournaments in his career, he doesn't just want to wait for his goodbye in Vienna without playing a single match. It's understandable that he wants to experience the ATP Tour atmosphere a couple more times in his last months. Once he retires, it will all be gone forever.

      His shots aren't as heavy as they used to be. That's what caused trouble for his opponents. His movement and all his shots are compromised now. They hit to either side without fear now. His serve is no longer the same. Dude didn't even need a slice during his heyday.

    Fognini don’t give up, you still have something do give to tennis…mi fa ridere vedere che sponsorizzi un produttore di porte piemontesi sulla spalla…😂

    I still can't imagine Thiem coming back.His playing style is not suitable for today's game.Playing with physical strength is outdated.When you go see alcaraz or sinner play it will be said that it is a fun game.Thiem's injury cannot be an excuse.Many tennis players who have had injury problems have been able to come back by simply changing their playing style.

      This is the case for Monfils who was able to return to the top 50 at 37 years after injuries.

    Can't believe Monfils beat Domi for the first time in 7 tries! It just shows how much Domi has fallen. Kudos to him for persevering, but the pressure is on his fans to deal with his decline. You can almost see how Monfils wasn't even trying that hard, out of respect for Domi...

      Monfils is just smarter than Thiem having adapted his game to its 37 years physical condition and was able to return to top 50 despite several injuries!
