I think she's taking the jab at people who used to say she can't date or perform etc... In the video she shuts them up by just having fun even if she doesnt know how to dance in those different genre of dancing, she tried and had fun doing it.
I agree with this to an extent. People constantly made fun of her dancing. This seemed like a response to that. The message is to have fun in your own skin.

She’s definitely reacting the critics who make fun of her lack of “dancing” on tour - people saying she can’t dance - one of the things I love most about Taylor is how smart she is and how willing she is to take criticism and absorb it and then also make fun of herself once in a while ❤️

When she does meet&greets, she's the one who picks the fans that will attend, from twitter, tumblr, instagram and etc. She even throws parties for fans at her houses, they're called "secret sessions", each one with about 100 fans.

This was the lead single of the 1989 Album in 2014. It's all very tongue in cheek, where she was becoming more hyper aware of her reputation in her music (...retroactive foreshadowing haha) as she moved right into the pop scene. The second single BLANK SPACE dials this right up as self parody about her dating history being dissected by the GP and media. You've reacted to Bad Blood and Wildest Dreams already. Also, Gaga and Taylor have always been on good terms. An interviewer tried to create some drama between them in 2009, the year of Lady Gaga's ICONIC VMAs "Paparazzi" performance (which you should react to if you haven't seen it! It's on MTV's CZcams channel I think) and the infamous Kanye "I'm going to let you finish..." statement to Taylor. Gaga was asked if she felt that the spotlight was stolen from her or some diva shit like that and Gaga completely shot it down and wasn't catty at all. They've never really had drama since.
This was Taylor's first real pop song. She had a couple other pop songs before, but this is what cemented her career as a pop artist instead of a country artist. It also reminds me of Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl."
I disagree. Same could be said for I Knew You Were Trouble, 22, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, and so on. RED was actually her breakthrough into pop music, 1989 just consolidated it.

this video is about finding yourself. She's been mixing up into different genres of dancing or crowds until in the end she was dancing with her fans and that's where she found herself. Also this is just a jab to the haters who always mock her dancing. TAYLOR QUEEN OF POP.
At the time everyone was making fun of her dancing so she made fun of herself in this video. Wasn't trying to imitate anyone, just show all these different types of dance. :)

so this video was actually celebrating different types of dances....all the different really amazing dancers and also poking fun at the fact that the media is constantly saying "she cant dance well" well...she knows that but she doesnt care, she's having fun! she's laughing while dancing in front of professionals and she KNOWS this lol she talks about it in a video for behind the scenes she made of making this video....she does a lot of behind the video stuff..you should check it out.

It was more of a surprise actually. The fans were all picked from different places based on being Taylor stans. They were assembled in the building the video was being shot in, and she popped out and surprised them with info of a new album and single. They kept the knowledge of it secret for months, which is what lead to her feeling like she could trust large groups of people again. Which influenced her decision to host listening parties at her house, for fans. She'd stalk them online, have them invited to her house to hear her new album in person, and then they'd literally keep their knowledge of the Secret Sessions until the release date. She did it for 1989, reputation, and Lover.
Secret Sessions include:
-Meet & Greet with Taylor that includes photos in any pose you want. If you want to lay on the floor, she'll get down with you. If you want her to give you a piggy back ride, she'll do it. If you want to hold her awards, go ahead.
-You get to meet her cats and hold them if the cats are accepting.
-Free food she makes.
-Hearing the entire album early. She'll explain in detail the thought process or inspiration for each track.
-Sometimes she'll have one of her friends there(and some are actually producers she works with).
Swifties would die for such an invitation. It's sparked this sudden surge in artists doing 'sessions' of their own. The first time it was looked down on as foolish. But she did it again even during her most 'bad girl' era, and it got a lot of positive attention because it just cemented loyalty and dedication even more. Stans of other artists began wanting that as well. Then she did it again for Lover and we started seeing other artists do the same except most of them were charging for it, which got them a lot of flack.

Something that i love is how different songs with the same title can be about complete different subjects, like this one talking about image and haters, and the Mariah Carey's "Shake it Off" that is about a ruined relationship.

The inspiration for the video with all the different types of dance, she purposefully danced out of character to their styles saying you can try and try and fit in and it will be awkward and uncomfortable, but when you find the right group of people (her fans) it will feel natural

There are several behind the scenes pieces of this on her channel, or Taylor Nation; a S Korean channel called Sara also has some amazing videos. Taylor Swift Texas (was cmntexas until a week ago) has a huge amount of her very early footage (and its somehow all licensed!) . Some is poorly recorded, but some of it dates back to when she was in middle school. She's been in the media from her first album, the year she turned 16; you can hear the changes year by year as she finishes growing, gets more vocal training, and writes more mature songs.

Just watch the behind the scenes of Shake It Off and she explains it and you get to see her just dancing and having fun during filming. The whole song is just about shaking off the haters. She’s not coming at any celebs. Just people who take things so seriously like people say she can’t dance and she knows that, but she doesn’t care. All the dance genres are her just showing that you don’t have to fit in, you just have to have fun. Also all those people at the end are just fans who were randomly picked to be in the video!

thanks for doing this one! my take on the concept for this video- she gets a lot of flack for both (supposedly) going through men quickly, and changing her sound/look etc. This seems to be her way of saying there is nothing wrong with trying new things, trying on new personas or looks/styles, everyone just needs to settle down. My take on it anyway!
ps- like others said too- blank space is probably her most over the top video in terms of production value, it would be GREAT to see your reaction (and also demonstrates her wonderful self-deprecating humor that we all love!). For a much more serious song/video, try "Safe and Sound' which a collab with her and the Civil Wars. (video isn't that interesting but a VERY different song her her).

To me, this is Taylor just having a ball, although making this video was a LOT of work. There's a series of CZcams videos on the making of this video. The shoot took several days, with all the different costumes and all the different groups of backup dancers. I don't think any of them represent specific other artists (such as Gaga). I think they just wanted to include a lot of different styles. And Taylor is really self-deprecating in the video, because she's not ashamed to show that she sucks at all these various dance genres, from ballet to twerking. The payoff is Taylor dancing with ordinary fans at the end.
