Homm3 Hero Portrait Remaster: How It's Made

- While working on the rest of the hero classes, I put together a video showing in 10x speed the whole process, featuring Shiva. The closed captions contain some information and thoughts during the process. Leave a comment if you have any questions and I'll try to get back to you sooner or later.

This is what I call the first iteration. It usually takes around 1-2 hours. Then I keep digesting the end result for a while and re-visit the image later to improve on details and bring it closer to the original. On the second iteration I typically spend around 0.5-1 hours to work on the details. Shiva here could definitely use some work work on her eyes and mouth.
The biggest criticism so far has revolved around the heroes' faces changing too much. And it's definitely the biggest challenge when working with AI plus the two transformations from low-res to HD to back low-res.
please please please hook up with the HoMM3 HotA community if you're not already. I would be ecstatic to see this integrated into the HD launcher

I've watched what you have posted so far, and I think that you do your best with the portraits that are humane somehow but not quite of humans.
I suppose it comes from a subjective impression.
In humans, every little detail you add or change is just so visible to the naked eye and impacts the general picture heavily. In all those fishes, lizards, bulls and dogs, I see changes but don't percieve them as "faces" anyway.
And somehow those two types of heroes merge in your green orcs and red demons. At the same time, they look closest to their originals and so fresh and up-to-date.

I just hope such creative minds make the moment, when the HoMM3 gets it's earned remaster, closer each day ❤
It got a HD edition that nobody plays because it doesn't have the expansions. I don't think Ubisoft is gonna invest in an actual remaster.

Any chance this portraits will be in era mod somehow?
Haven't looked into mod platforms really, maybe at some later date. But anyone is free to make a mod out of this or incorporate the images in other mods.
Please tell us you have a plan to upscale the whole game - sprites as well... 😶🌫

Some portraits do not want to be replaced. For example Galtran, Monere. Game version: HotA 1.7.1. The same problem on version HotA 1.6. Does anyone have the same problem and did you solve it?
I haven't tested these yet with HotA. Probably will look into it at some point.
Hi, I was wondering since you are the author of these awesome portraits, can I use these in a dungeon crawler game that I am making?
I don't have any objections. But Ubisoft lawyers may, since these characters are still homm3 intellectual property. I'd recommend instead looking into AI generation tools and making your own portraits. Good luck with your game!

Is it possible to upscale not remastered version?
So that if you downscale back it in any graphical editor you shall get the (almost) original?

That would be an HD version then. I'm not aware of such a tool that could do it credibly. A channel called CyberHeroMM3 does AI upscaling + AI face restoration, which is probably the best automated HD upscaling method to date that doesn't alter the original.
