At about 28:40, Paul double nuts the exhaust studs and uses a torque wrench to "apply a steady pressure as close to 36 ft-lbs as possible, until the stud stops turning." I did this, but the stud never stopped turning. My torque wrench was well under 36 ft-lbs of torque. The stud is steel. The cylinder head is aluminum. I cracked my Rav's cylinder head at the bolt hole.
My bad; I should have known better. The studs, by themselves, should not be torqued to 36 ft-lbs.
To help the viewer, I think this part of the video should be re-done.
Hi! I agree about the exhaust stud torque. Unfortunately I can't add any annotations to the video to correct it, and re-uploading it isn't really an option since many people have already linked to it in forums. I'll pin your comment and hope people see it.
A better torque spec would be about half: 18 ft-lb. The Toyota service manual says 36, but doesn't specify a different torque for the studs. I've never had a problem working on cars without a torque wrench, but when following specs over just feeling it out, you can get into trouble.
I've had bolts break and some of the other bolts wouldn't tighten to torque. Bolts snapped on their own. I didn't touch them.

Nezapomínejte že podmínky (stav dílů) na používaném automobilu jsou už jiné oproti novým dílům na montážní lince výrobce!!! Vždy na to myslete 🤔🤩

Thank you for your service. I can now fix my car. The people at Toyota seriously couldn't tell me that there's no belt tensioner for the alternator, and that it's called an alternator bracket. But the guy who manages the parts and knows the car can adamantly tell me that there is no belt tensioner period Made for that model vehicle except for the timing belt. Like come on man...
Also my pulley completely separated itself from the balancer I can slide it back and forth. Very fun stuff. Now I got to replace that part too. Supposed to be one part, now they're two, neet magic trick.

Just completed my head gasket replacement yesterday thanks to this video!
Just wanted to say one thing for people following this tutorial step-by-step.
If you remove the power steering pump, be sure to re-install it before the wiring harness or timing covers. I only realized I hadn't done this once I got to the "Fill Power Steering Fluid" step.
Luckily I was able to squeeze it into position by removing the tie rod from the lower control arm.
My eternal gratitude goes to you, Paul. Without this video, my rav would likely be sitting in a junk yard somewhere.

WOW !!! I just bought a project 1999 Rav 4 and although I know cars (I drive only Toyotas) and work at a parts store and have been working on cars for 60 years (I'll be 77 in three days)

I've done a ton of head gaskets. I know what's involved in such a job....but you made it look so orderly and easy. And for a 1997 that motor is "clean". It's been maintained well.

My head gasket just went out for the second time on my 1998 rav4, so we are swapping my motor and I started out with what my dad suggested for removing stuff, but we got stumped by the wiring. Thanks! I though about just wearing the lab coat everywhere, but it's for wearing in the lab. Sometimes I see surgeons walking around in green clothing in public and it doesn't make sense. Are you going to operate later with street dirt all over your clothes? I decided to wear the lab coat only in the garage. Also I won't get people staring at me in public.

Excellent production sir. Your knowledge of the product is amazing. Your memory is outstanding. I could/would not attempt this job. It would stay apart forever. I would have to bite the bullet and hire a true professional such as yourself to complete the job. Watching the video verifies the fact that honest, professionally educated automotive specialists are the only way to get the job done right the first time. Wish there were more like you out there. Unfortunately, there are many "mechanics" as they may call themselves who do not possess the level of expertise you do, and would ultimately perform a poor job, resulting in headaches and frustration. I like to watch automotive videos such as this. It enforces ones appreciation of commitment to high quality , honest automotive repair.
Remove the plug in the strut Tower and use the sight hole to align the top timing marks at the same time you can see the crank alignment.

Very well explained on the TOYOTA Rave4. you are more than a professional. The best video on how to head gasket replacement out there for the RAV4. These car can for a long long time. I got a 1998 model with 350000 thousand miles in it and still starts every time when it’s below -25. I trust this more then my 2015 Highlander. You can’t go wrong Toyota period. Paul, I appreciate the time, effort and dedication gone into the actual job and the video presentation. I was planning on doing this job myself but now I'm leaning towards just paying a shop to do it or if I end up doing it, I feel like I will be better off just pulling the engine engine out and working on it mounted on a stand.

This is a great video, well done. The labelling and FSM screen shots are very helpful. My only two critiques are 1) instead of using a tap to clean the head bolt threads, I prefer to make a chaser tool by cutting two large grooves down the length of one of the old head bolts with a dremel. This is less aggressive than a tap, less likely to damage the threads, and the perfect length for the hole. Those threads take a lot of pressure, so I think it's good to leave as much thread material in place as possible. My second critique is that you can rent those harmonic balancer pullers for free from the parts stores. Otherwise, excellent work!

Not that it matters in this case but you measured the belt tension spring outer length instead of the inner length as the diagram shown prior.
The spring loaded cam split gear is a clever design to take up the back-lash between gears.
Yes, the diagram says to measure inside the spring, but it was closer to the spec on the outside. Either my calipers are bad, or the diagram is wrong.

You're welcome! Thank you for helping me. I watched your timing belt video before I made this video. I had no idea about the timing mark on the crank pulley. The timing belt procedure in the Toyota service manual is pretty awful. Without your video, I would have been very confused.

That's impressive! thanks! I don't have an OBD2 on mine but did the bridge to get my error codes. I got the 31 code for the Air Flow Meter signal (Vacuum Sensor signal). My problem is that my engine has troubles/small jerks between 1k-3k RPM (but doesn't stall at idle), and run nearly always great after 3k RPM... I only have this when accelerating at wot. When slowly accelerating i don't get it. I hear a little whistling sound while acelerating too. I dont know what it could be, if you have any infos don't hesitate aha. Keep it up, love your vids

Your videos came well timed, they gave me confidence to do things like install my own OME kit, replace my valve cover gasket, and now my head gasket, though I hope it never comes to that :P Overall your videos have made me become more knowledgeable overall about my 1999 rav4, which is also a 5 speed with center diff lock. @@DonnieDarko1 My RAV4 has 158,000 miles and it's 23 years old, so all the gaskets are pretty weak, plus I installed a radiator cap that didn't work and the coolant pressure got super high, causing the head gasket to blow. (it's in the middle of the video).
Unfortunately, my RAV4 has been too much of a POS to really drive it anywhere. Now that the engine works properly, I plan on adding a skid plate, then doing some off road driving.

nice job on the video, could not stop watching it. I got a 1991 camry with bad oil consumption problem....besides the fact that front oil seal and main seal leak, i think I got valve stem gasket leaks. Got me motivated to work on it now. 150K and runs like a pig, haha.
Before you start, do a compression test. If your piston rings are good, changing the cylinder head will fix a lot of problems. If the compression is bad, replace the whole engine, or the car.
@@LabCoatPaul good idea, I changed plugs but did not do a compression test. Need to figure out how to shut off the fuel pump first, so it won't get flooded. I really like these engines, so easy to work on

@@LabCoatPaul BTW, don't do the engine mounts. They are a pain to change. I did them and it was very difficult. You even have to support the engine from the top to remove the engine mount bar.

Thank you! It looks pretty good in the videos, but there are a few RAV4's out there with no rust and low mileage that are much better than mine. My RAV4 still has a long way to go before it's in perfect condition.
