      gendo1 "Corps" not core

    • @stephencannon3140
      @stephencannon3140 Před 4 lety +1

      Discipline..Yes and No.
      The spacing is for evaluators to go in between the squads to check for weapons position, recruit stance and bearing. That’s the biggest part. The secondary purpose is to check “Attention to Detail”. It may seem innocent but the cover, alignment is for the platoon to be uniform and professional. Normally when you fall in, you do a cover/align but the purpose of it being called to attention is to tweak any minor defeats. The filming from above is even better. You can get a birds eye view from angles that may be difficult to see at ground level.
      The whole idea of close order drill is to see a platoon working together and realizing that all members have equal roles to play in success. The Drill competitions at MCRD is to evaluate how the recruits progress in team work. Attention to detail and spirit/ morale.
      The stances are graded on “Attention to Detail” if one recruit is off, that will stand out. Evaluators are fair but firm. The everyday close order drill isn’t done with the platoons drill instructors. The drill evaluation is done by DI from different areas, company/battalion level to avoid a DI evaluating their own platoon and avoid bias and possible Conflict of Interest.

Winter cycles are always small, you get all the people who thought they were going to go to college and for some reason that did not work out, or the people that are tired with their jobs and want to do something new. Summer cycles are historically larger due to majority of its recruits coming straight from high school. My first summer platoon, we started with over 100 recruits.

    @wilhard45 Před 4 lety

    A couple of things that stuck in my craw. Marines drilling indoor? Unless there is a blizzard with eight feet of snow I don't see much reason to be indoors. These are Marines. They won't melt. Second, why does the drill instructor need a list to read from? Once again, in my day the platoon commander memorized the order of drill. This is as much a test for the platoon as it is for the senior drill instructor/platoon commander.

    • @boywalker1812
      @boywalker1812  Před 4 lety

      @wilhard45 I appreciate your comments and thank you for serving. First, these are not Marines yet at the time of the video, these are still recruits. Second, indoor drill is mandated due to inclement weather in accordance with the DepO P1513.6B, Chapter 5, par 5001, subparagraph 1. As Marines, we enforce, follow orders and regulations. If you don't agree with it, write a point paper as to why and submit to the Commanding General who wrote the Order, see if you can persuade him otherwise. Last, you are correct, the Drill Instructor is evaluated during this event and must memorize the card incase it falls out of his/her hands, however there is no penalty in having it during the standing portion of drill. Points are only deducted while calling cadence during the marching portion with the card infront of you. I would argue that is just using some common sense and using it to your advantage as you would with anything else in combat. If there is anything else I can help clarify please feel free to ask -GySgt Mejia

After graduation and before shipping out for infantry training our platoon commander, a Chosin Marine, talked about how tough it was in his day. Then he talked about how his gunny complained that his WWII Marines were so much tougher. Well after a half century of being a Marine it is my turn to tease you boots. Don't worry, in 40 or 50 years you get to look back and tell new Marines that back when you served it was so much tougher. Just be glad I didn't bring up the PI versus SD rivalry. Being Parris Island O think we can rule out a blizzard but inclement weather can be anything. PI does get chilly in the winter occasionally....ask me how I know....
      The inclement weather guidelines cover snow, wind, rain, heat...yes heat. Doesn’t to a platoon or DI any good of the recruits are passing out from heat exhaustion. Guidelines might be considered too conservative for some but the biggest word is Safety for recruits and staff.

      You weren’t too far off from me. I started in January 1996 with Lima Co. 3009 is a fairly low number. Most platoons get the numbers started over again every October 1st to coincide with beginning of new Fiscal year.
      Example K company starting in October/ November/December would have low 3000 numbers. You were 3009 but another company could have started the 3000-3008. Four companies per Battalion, usually three-four platoons per cycle. PI doesn’t use J so 1st Battalion is A-D company, 2nd E-H. And 3rd is I-M. Fourth Battalion (females only) is N-P I believe 4th RTB only has three companies.

In Parris Island, if the outside temperature is below 45 degrees Fahrenheit , we consider that too cold sometimes to do outdoor evaluation drill, so we go indoors where it's warmer and vice versa during the summer time. If it's black flag meaning way too hot outside then we go indoor drill to prevent heat casualty.

      @@TheDeepsix13Brother no hard feelings here, we got thick skin. I have explained the reasons for the slow fall-in on previous comments, however I'm sure you will not be the last person to comment about this. Everyone thinks their experience in boot camp, specifically drill is the same across - which is not. Like I mentioned in other replies, the drill manual is executed they way the regimental Drill interprets the drill manual and how he wants the movements executed; for the most part they are similar but once on awhile you get one that sees it different. This was the case during this cycle where we did a slow version of "fall-in" (which was changed I think about 2 weeks before final drill) along with the swing motion of the arm (6" to the front 3" to the rear). In addition, each Battalion has a drill master who grades a squad who sometimes wants to see certain drill movements executed in a particular way, different from another drill Master. I'm sure once the regimental drill Master left, "fall-in" was changed to the common one we see. As far as training, this subject is always changing as we move forward and adapt to new threats in the world and new generation of warfighters. We may/may not agree with this, but it is what is pushed down from people with shiny stuff in their collars. Semper Fidelis - GySgt Mejia.

    • @boywalker1812
      @boywalker1812  Před 4 lety +3

      There will always be changes to the "fall in" portion of drill pending on how the current drill master interpreters the drill manual. When I went through boot camp, we had to learn 3 different fall ins due to the drill master not agreeing on one form ( one of them was a slow version as well in San Diego, same as in the video). During my time at Parris Island, this was the only time it was changed to this slow version of fall in due to changes in the Regimental Drill Master. If you are/were a Marine, I am sure you understand this type of change when receiving a new section leader/ platoon sergeant/ 1stSgt and even Co. Bashing one coast versus the other does nothing and speaks ill of you. I have been to both MCRDS and have had Marines from both coast serve with me in combat. I can speak from experience that the difference in performance is none, we are all Marines. Semper Fidelis - GySgt Mejia.

    I have NO IDEA what is going on in this video...an indoor drill inspection...man have these guys gone soft or what...this saddened me that someone actually thought of this and followed through with this idea....is that an officer drinking out of the jug in front of recruits or a screwed up drill instructor? And where is their campaign cover? I know they're in bleachers, but they should have hit the deck moving a lot faster than that. How come the 1st Squad is the only one that does a dress right dress to get cover and alignment, the other 3 look like they are lost....I could go on,,,but I ain't watching no more of this...

      Sir, I appreciate you finding interest in this video. To educate you a little, Initial and Final Drill evaluations in Parris Island, SC have always been conducted indoors during inclement weather during the summer and winter periods. If it was not an graded drill period, then the event would be conducted outdoors, depending on weather restrictions (mostly when there is lightning outside). From speaking to previous Marines from the Drill Instructor Association who where Drill Instructots as far back as 1950's, this is something they did back then as well during inclement weather. Now, as far as you claiming they should move faster during "fall-in", this is something that changes actually quite often on both East and West coast, depending on the Drill Masters interpretation of the manual, and how they want the companies to execute that movement. Next, 1st squad is not doing "dress right dress", they are doing "fall-in" at the beginning to get their alignment. The rest of the squads can not stop moving until 1st squad gets their alignment and puts their arm down so the rest can cover down. Also, 1st squad does not cover down on anyone, because they have no one infront of them to cover down on. To clarify, officers dont wear campaign covers. As far as the Marine drinking water, he's just an observer and frankly, I dont see anything wrong with him drinking water, this is actually a good example of a leader showing subordinates to keep hydrated even when it's cold; if it was an energy drink or something else, I could see your point. Last, I think theres a bad perception of Marines getting "softer". I actually used to believe this, but as I moved up in ranks, I have a better understanding of this and believe most of the changes are due to doing things a smarter way. Theres still a few things I dont agree with, but guess what, we are Marines, and what makes us unique is that we strive on discipline to enforce, obey orders and regulations given to us. Here's the Drill and Ceremony Manual order as a reference incase you see anything else that doesn't make sense: MCO P5060.20 W/CH 1. Feel free to comment any other concerns see if I can help. It appears that the government has taken a cautious approach by permitting recruits to engage in indoor drill under specific weather conditions this day. This decision is likely driven by their substantial investment of millions of dollars in hundreds of civilians who have yet to become Marines. Undoubtedly, it demonstrates a shrewd and prudent choice. 😂

      Yes, I think I made it clear in the description that this was final drill MSgt. I don't know who you are referring to as they? if you mean the platoon as whole couldn't pull of Inspection Arms, I would disagree with you. The platoon as a whole passed this movement. Yes, I agree there was one too many that didnt do this movement properly, but overall "they" pulled it off as a platoon in not only this movement, but every other movement, placing in 1st. Moving on to drill movements being exaggerated, maybe; but as mentioned in previous comments, each time theres a new Regimental Drill Master, he or she will tell you what they want to see based on their interpretation of the Drill Manual. If you spent anytime as a Drill Instructor, you should know this. I'm sorry the changes in the Marine Corps disgust you, however, these are changes made by people a lot higher than me that I cannot change and only reinforce as an enlisted Marine, another subject you should know since you served as an enlisted Marine. MSgt, let me know if you have any other concerns. Semper Fidelis. -GySgt Mejia
