  • The Honor Graduates of Bravo & November Company retire the platoon guidons and the distinguished graduates are recognized during the graduation ceremony on Parris Island. Graduation date #Dec152017 #ParrisIslandPhotography Congratulations Marines!
This is a great example of what Marine Corps boot camp graduation is like.
During Marine Corps boot camp Phase 4, the new Marines begin to transition from their roles as recruits into that of United States Marines. During this phase new Marines now call their Drill Instructors by their rank. Instead of “Sir” or “Ma’am,” it is “Sgt” or “SSgt”. The Drill Instructors continue mentoring the new Marines by conducting discussion periods on critical topics that will help the new Marines to be successful in their transition to the operational forces.
The new Marines are given more responsibility during this phase to ensure that tasks are accomplished and time hacks are met. No longer is every minute of their day managed by the Drill Instructors. Now, new Marines are given orders and expected to lead themselves to accomplishing the mission. This opportunity allows the new Marines gain a better understanding of how they will be expected to operate in the “Fleet.”
Marine Day 11, excited families line the streets and try to catch a glimpse of their Marine running by in formation. Family Day starts off with a motivational run, referred to as the “MOT Run” throughout the Depot. All graduating Marines run in formation while singing motivational cadence, loudly signaling successful completion of Recruit Training. As recruits run to the cadence of their Drill Instructors, parents, family members and friends line the streets and cheer as they try to find the face of their loved one among the crowd of new Marines.
After the MOT Run, the new Marines have a chance to see family and friends for the first time during on-base liberty. Graduation is conducted on Friday in a formal ceremony and parade, attended by family and friends.

I was privileged to attend my grandson's Parris Island graduation last year -- the last one with full Family Week festivities before the virus crisis lockdowns that have DESTROYED much of what makes life in these United States so meaningful! I feel so sad for the Marines that have come after and been denied a graduation in front of viewing stands filled with their adoring and proud family and friends! Yes, they are Marines, and have been trained to bear up under harsh conditions. I just have a problem when the conditions are largely contrived and arbitrary. I hope that this situation will soon be remedied.

Do I ever agree with you! My 2 son's that currently serve would be the first to tell you that. You probably had to purchase it yourself too! If not, you are very fortunate. My oldest son joined after 9/11 and was on the bus to Parris Island. When he graduated in December, 2001, they didn't have the honor of graduating in the dress blues either. Then they had to purchase brand new dress blues, and every button on the blouse had to be replaced with new buttons that were $35 each. Crazy!

God Bless brothers and sisters, this is one honor I never experienced, the Parade Deck Graduation. When I was a young recruit, we graduated in the base theatre on Parris Island due to a Hurricane that never arrived. I actually had to prove this several times when Marines would say "All Marines graduated BC on the Parade Deck aboard P.I.". I simply show them my platoon year book and our series in the base theatre on graduation day.
Semper Fi, enjoy the fleet. REMEMBER THIS, the current administration is demanding segregation by teaching hate toward one another based on race, THIS IS A FACT, however the Marine and your Doc to the left and right of you are YOUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS, NEVER ALLOW ANYTHING TO ERODE THAT, especially a collective of garbage hate mongers!

One big change I have noticed. Evidently recruits are issued Dress Blue uniforms sometime prior to Graduation from Boot Camp. During the period of time I served in the Corps, if you wanted to wear Dress Blues you had to purchase them out of pocket. Nevertheless, these Marines earned their EGA and on this day as they graduated from Marine Corps Boot Camp. It was on this day that they became members of “The Few, The Proud” and from this day forward they will be known as United States Marines!

I was in the USAF 72-76. USAF basic at the time was more like summer camp than boot camp. My flight was fortunate to have a TI who was a farmer Marine DI. He was tough on us but by god when I flight was marching around Lackland, people would stop and watch us go by...We were PROUD at a time when much of the military was demoralized. I went on to do a lot of joint training with Marines and I was amazed at the focus and dedication to ttheir mission. I learned from that and it has stood me in good stead my entire life...Semper Fly form the USAF, partners in dominating any battlefield, anywhere, any time
Funny side story, we had a kid form Kentuckey who was dumb as a box of rocks. One day our former-Marine TI got REALLY frustrated with him and started calling him "GOmer". The first time he called (yelled) Gomer at him the rest of the flight just about fell out on the ground laughing so we all got our asses chewed...it was worth it ...for the last three weeks of basic, he called im "Pyle"

Serving one's country in the military is certainly something of which one should be proud having reached and achieved his/her place in Graduation. In the British Services, one receives a certificate, whilst in the US Services one receives a certificate plus a medal - the latter "... for services in defence of the USA." I would suggest that every serviceman/woman in every country at graduation, has served "in defence of his/her country!" So one might ask "Where is the merit in that?"
In the UK, a soldier can serve, say, 20 years, survived (or possibly not survived) combat in two or more theatres of war e.g. Kossovo and Afghanistan. If he/she has no blemish on his record, he/she will be entitled to two Campaign and one Long Service Good Conduct Medal (LSGC). If he has gone beyond what is expected, e.g. single-handedly defeated a superior force in one or more actions, he will receive a medal according to the level of his action/s. By contrast, US personnel who have served say, 5 years with no battle service, will already have a chestful of medals and honour badges according to whatever training he has attained.
When you put these two men/women side by side, the contrast is staggering, for one is led to believe that the American with both sides of his/her chest and both arms covered with flashes and medal ribbons, literally outshines the Brit with his "paltry" three of four ribbons. The big difference is that the British Awards have been EARNED, while the US Awards have been GIVEN with no merit whatsoever. It is a case of overplaying and wallowing in self-glorification; it truly devalues every honour awarded!
If a US soldier enters a battle/campaign situation, he gets a medal, which is but right and proper; but he also gets a medal for serving with his unit, and another for serving with his Division for the same battle - ergo, three medals for one battle service. It looks good on his chest, but is frankly overkill and without merit of any kind. It's all purely for show.
My stepfather served in the British Army for 22 years before, during and after WW2. He had ten Campaign and LSGC Medals, including the British Empire Medal (awarded by the King); every one of those was EARNED, NOT GIVEN, but beside an American with just a few years non-combat service, you would be wrong in thinking that the US serviceman had achieved much, much more, which would be wholly erroneous and - I might say - unfitting, to say the least!

Most of you will go to the Vietnam, some of you will not comeback. But always remember this. Marines die that's what we're here for. But the Marine Corps lives forever. And that means you will live forever
