I think what makes this soundtrack so coherent and satisfying is that the music was literally written to be part of the universe. In some media, video games and movies inclusive, music is written to fill the void, to elicit strong emotions such as tears, to move people to anger and violence, in order to entice the audience to sympathize with the characters or their motives. There are other artistic reasons as well, such as to pair sound with the landscape. But in Final Fantasy X, the Hymn of the Faith plays a central role in the story and lives of the characters. Not only is it the source of inspiration for the key melodies that we hear while playing the game, but the Hymn is actually part of their universe. That forms a very special bond between the player and the game.

      That is so true!
I started playing FF7(OG) now, and I am fascinated by the pure wealth of music inside there. And I am not even at wallmarket!
FF8 and 9 caught me in my childhood. It was so well done. Where FF8 feels like an action movie, FF9 deliveres better in forming the story with the music (and remember, FF9 had no voiceover). And then FF10 hit like a brick. Voiceover (which was sometimes a little cringy), combined with music? Truly a masterpiece! In some places I just stood there, switched to the main menu or paused the game and just listened to the music for half an hour or so. (never did that again in FF12, 13 or 15 though...)
Uematsu (Sensei? Sensei!) definitely uses the music to enhance or sometimes form the story, not just to fill it.
