I have one simple answer: Dopamine. Whenever us humans as a species hear something like a notification sound, dopamine flows into our brains because of how much pleasure we get after receiving said messages. Naturally, we try and seek that last hit of pleasure to spike our dopamine, just to make us feel good.
Youre right, people have a natural desire to novelty, thats part of the reason why addictions work. Though i think ut could be explained in a way that people always lie to relate to someone.
Lowkey i remember I'd be on the PS4 back in the day and we'd watch movies with the homies. I'd be working mad hours in management and would fall asleep nearly everytime because I'd accept the invite knowing I was already about to be out (probably FOMO because everytime they have a session something funny always happen and I miss it). I know I snore so I'm already knowing they got some ish to say. I tried to play it off but...a nigga was def sleep 😅.I think it's subconciously a "can you hang" test when I was asked it, but in reality, just saying "yeah i was out" and letting them piece together why (since I was working insane hours as a manager and they already knew that because I was hardly on), logically would save me the embarassment of cap. And say you don't have "an excuse", who cares? You was tired, and even if your response is usually "yes" that doesn't make you lazy or anything. Just is what it is
I think it’s because society and people in general see sleep as laziness and not as rest so because of that we say we weren’t sleeping to avoid being called lazy or sleepy even if you aren’t aware of it you do it unconsciously.

It's not easy, they're at complete peace and sleep is so important for our health, that's why people speak in a quieter voice if they're gonna wake you up, or they try and move quietly when they're around you, so I imagined the reason people respond this way is to not hurt the other person's feelings, so that they don't feel bad for waking you up.
For me it's shame. I always struggled to fall asleep, and I always struggled to wake up in the morning. So if my ass is asleep when it isn't supposed to be, I hide that shit
If im half asleep and someone asks me if im awake, if i hear them say it and my brain processes it, them talking to me woke me up and id technically be lying if i said no
idk man but honestly i have a hard time sleeping and after i finally wake up i feel ashamed because i was being “unproductive” or whatever our society has to say
i guess it gives a sense of power. "are you awake?" yes, i am, i beat you to your question, sorta thing. in a way we lie about achievements as a whole with competetiveness, i wonder if thats what it is?
